    I used to work as a course worker at ski racing and when a skier was on the course, every worker had to be off the course. I can't see how this happened and there is really no excuse for it. Fifty people should have been yelling at the guy via the radio. If he had kept going straight, she would have missed him. Just a shame.

      WIth 50 people yelling at the same he wouldnt have understood anything. And anyways he was the coach and director of the US-team at that time

      World Championships in Sierra Nevada had a lot of rescheduling due to unstable weather conditions just like previous WC in Morioka, Japan. Wind and fog were a big problem for downhill competitions so the organizers rushed to finish the training runs in order to execute the downhill races on scheduled day. One big factor in this particular crash was that that time of starting order betweeen racers differed from 40 seconds to one minute. The course was about 1:50-1:55 min long and at one point there were even 3 skiers on the course at the same time since they started every 40 seconds when the conditions were not favorable. Which I think is unheard of but like I said DH training runs already had many delays. The other factor was a bad communication. A jump called Jeronimo is about 20-25 seconds before the finish and as the world super-G champion Isolde Kostner with bib 29 passed FIS official Schonhaar obviosly thought that nobody is on the course since they always have a break after number 30. But number 30 was still on the course... Although Lebedeva had to finish her career after this crash she can consider herself lucky. In almost exactly the same circumstances Regine Cavagnoud tragically lost her life in October 2001 at the super-G training in Austria when she collided with a german coach who survived...

    Only after watching it a few times did I notice that she hit him so hard & fast that she literally lifted him clean out of both of his ski bindings;
    there must have been some kilonewtons of force to do that

    An extremely nasty crash and the athlete could not do anything about it. Luckily she "only" entangled and did not hit him frontal. They both could have died.
