Buddhist monks were a symbol of hope and defiance during the dark years of Myanmar’s military dictatorship. But as the country opens up to the world, some have taken a radically sectarian turn. Since 2012, violence has uprooted more than 150,000 members of the country's Muslim minority. And in July 2014, Buddhist mobs attacked Muslim homes and businesses in the second-largest city, Mandalay. Sparked by unfounded rumors that a Muslim man had raped a Buddhist woman, they were stoked by Ashin Wirathu, the leader of a large monastery, who posted the rumor to his Facebook account. Two people were killed, a Muslim and a Buddhist. Reporter Jason Motlagh traveled to Myanmar to meet Wirathu and find out why practitioners of a religion known for prizing compassion have come to fuel sectarian hatred.

There is a difference between criticism and genocide. You don't need to make extra laws for minorities and to keep radical minorities in check is one thing. But killing children, burning people and villages is something different and needs to be stopped.

Please look at the plight of minorities in Muslim countries. Compare it with countries that have Muslims as minorities. Who has a better deal? Now the world is aware of the dark intent of Islam. I believe Iran's current official name is "The Islamic Republic of Iran." But the O.P. most likely meant "a lot of Muslim majority countries." As a buddhist and also as a Burmese, I would say religions are very gentle and deep. It's a big deal actually. I respect every religions and their rights, but it seems that the government accept buddhism as a national religion. So there might not have the same rights as buddhists for other minority religious groups. Imagine if the minority buddhists were in a muslim country, would their government give them the same rights?
