  • Parts were purchased on eBay, search for "hp 15-bw top lid" for the back cover of the display assembly, and if you can't find a kit like I had, also search for "hp 15-bw hinge" and you should find results.

I like learning how to repair broken laptops. There are so many out there for a bargain that need repairs.

I always do a thorough cleaning of the LCD face before I put the bezel back in place. It can be difficult to get into the corners of the bezel to clean the LCD surface later, so why not clean the entire surface when it's readily available? Also, the bezel will cover areas that may be dirty, so cleaning the LCD beforehand gets rid of contaminants that may squeeze past the bezel later. At that point, I switch to medical gloves to prevent oils/fingerprints transferring from my hands. Handing back a pristine laptop makes for a great look to the client.

RS Foam cleanser works a treat to clean plastics of finger residue.
Paintbrush to work it through the keyboard & microfibre towel to remove.
If replacement parts are not available or you are keeping the hinge: Solvent weld carefully.
Over time the grease in the hinge leaves & it becomes stiffer.
Then opening/closing starts to pull too hard on the embedded nuts & it starts to snap the plastic or undo the screws (if very lucky).
This starts as the floppy for part of its travel stage & the last chance for an easy repair without new parts or several stages of fix.
The hinge tensioner can be undone slightly to get it back to reasonable force to open/close. So it works with monkey strength not gorilla strength :-) This is usually the fault that caused the break. So if you only bought new plastic parts it still needs to be done to re-use the hinge without repeating the fault damage.
Loose screws can be tightened AFTER adding a drop of low/medium strength thread-locker.
Most glues don't bond well. I used to drill small holes & wire together with epoxy on top but found a better way as follows: Back to new.
Cracked plastic can be repaired with a small bottle of (usually) acetone solvent with (abs) plastic added in until single cream / batter thickness. Acetone is known as nail polish remover (but get your own don’t pinch it !). It will fully dissolve abs & settle over a day with thicker at the bottom & thinner at the top. This IS what you need so don’t shake. Caution: Solvent used so don’t breathe it in during use or drying ! You need fresh air.
Start with the base that usually also has damage but is better hidden. Any spills learning are not very visible there :-)
Align & paint the inside of the bare crack with a little of the runnier mix from top of the bottle to key/melt/join into the surface flush. Taping the outside over the crack can help align & prevent leakage. If in doubt put a little on & let it tack together then move along the crack.
Let that dry for an hour & fill between the snapped off bit and where it came from with the bottom of the bottle mix more like mayo/mayonnaise.
In particular apply between the plastic reinforcement webbing snapped off ### and the lid/case it should be part of. It does not need to be filled solid but just a fillet (in the corners).
It needs at least 4 days to dry out SLOWLY. The filler actually melts into the surrounding plastic & then hardens for a strong join.
Do NOT move the hinge, apply any heat or leave it in the sun as it needs time to merge rather than boiling off the solvent into bubbles before it has joined. I usually leave it alone for a full week so it is better than ‘as new’.
If you are impatient & disturb it early you can add a bit more runny & wait longer.
I can’t tell how warm it is where you left it or how gloopy you mixed the glue so your mileage will vary (time needed to dry).
Keep an eye out for the screws you try to tighten/loosen that the embedded nut spins as it has let go of the plastic.
The runny mix can wick into the gap well but it needs the screw removing first so it doesn’t go into the threads & prevent tightening/loosening permanently !
It still needs the time to dry.
If you fix several damaged cases then you end up having various colours of plastics in bottles to match each case.
Particularly useful when the bezel has been snapped & the crack will be on the seen surface.
It can also join/fill other broken areas on the case such as around the power in socket.
Some mousepad buttons use S shaped plastic springs to hold buttons in pace without a separate metal spring. With care to prevent wicking they can be fixed. They need a slight gap so not to glue them to the surface they are next to.

These HP hinges are terrible! They need to get away from trying to be super thin - super thin is NOT what I want as a product. I want robust! I had to repair a similar model recently (an x360 or something I think it was).

I've a G7-2217cl that possibly needs it's bottom cover replaced. Left side will not close flush despite screw all in the way inside. Either hinge and or bottom cover broken inside. Better to buy new than buying 10 year old replacement part(s)?

    Smashing repair :-D
The brass inserts in the plastic can move around and crack the pathetic plastic mouldings, skimping again :-(
My four million year old Acer Aspire 5315 has some minor cracks, but it is old and has two antennas.
Wafer thin cases are very silly, i like chunky ones but i'm an old git so meh lol.
Modern laptops are just junk, too much merging of chips make them a pointless repair :-(.

I had one of those terrible laptops for just under a year before I gave up and bought an Asus TUF.
In that time, the space bar stopped working, the left click had to be pressed in the centre, both display hinges didn't break, but the thread that held them onto the chassis ripped right out of the plastic. I used loads of resin to completely fuse the hinges to the chassis of the laptop.
In the end, every single USB Port, the webcam and the SD Card reader stopped working, and it became incredibly unstable and wouldn't run with Dual Channel RAM.
Worse £349 I had ever spent on a laptop, especially when I only got a 28 day warranty.

Thank you so much for this! Unfortunately my crappy cheapo laptop also decided it no longer needed the screw holes for the main centre plate, the one that holds the keyboard, mobo etc. All the holes just crumbled. TBF it was £45 worth spending to finally get to giving this operation a go! Thank you! 🙏🏼

Got the same model with the same side boken. If you are not concerned about looks why pay for a new replacement that has the same weak point? Going to drill and tap metal plates each side of the lid. Then adjust the friction on the hinges which are so stiff the casing flexes. If I am working near the CPU fan, I clean it and repaste the CPU. The laptop will run cooler, quieter and if it was really clogged up helps prevent overheating shutdowns. Oh and I clean the screen last. Just found your videos and subscribed. I also have a dead graphics card to play with.

I wanted to add one thing: Don't be tempted to re-use the existing metal hinges, even though they look and feel fine. They're not. HP uses a hinge lubricant known to dry up and thicken over time. I sometimes call it a warranty timer. Eventually, the hinges become so stiff that you're exerting 60+ lbs. of force on the plastic mounting posts every time you operate the lid, and the posts just snap off, causing the hinges detach as they did here. So it's critical to replace the hinges with new ones with fresh lubricant. However, There is an EASY way to re-use the existing hinges, but it takes a little extra time. There is a :"clutch nut" on the end of each hinge which you can loosen around 1/8th of a turn with pliers and vice grips to reduce the force needed to operate the hinge. Loosen it too much and the lid won't stand upright, so you have to be careful. That, plus a little bit of spray silicon lubricant on the old hinges, will not only give the hinges a new life, but will prevent this problem from ever happening again. It's actually a more permanent fix than replacing the hinges, since the lubricant in the new hinges will thicken just as before after a few years. I've been fixing laptops professionally for over13 years and have personally repaired this model HP more than once.

I very much appreciate your opting out of the TH-cam mid-roll advertisements. Many other channels I watch do not opt out and the ads are becoming oppressive. I literally counted 10 ads in the first 20 minutes of a video recently. I understand that YT needs to make a profit, but I think they are seriously overdoing the mid-roll ads. I hope more channels follow your lead and opt out.

Had a similar problem back in 2015 where my HP Envy dv7's bottom case broke exactly where the screws would go in. Every time I opened it up, the left side where the single fan was and power jack was would open up. When I opened up the laptop it only had a single heatpipe for both the hot i7 3630qm and GT635M, so my theory is that the plastic screw moulding just couldn't withstand the heating and cooling that area would have experienced.
I looked online for a replacement shell, but couldn't find any adorable ones (it was around 180USD)
At that point I had the laptop for two and a half years, so I just waited a bit for a decent sale and bought a Dell Inspiron 7559 (still one of my all time favorite laptops)

Here's a tip for you Adam, On these laptops that are showing signs of age and the hinges are being a problem - This is because the nuts that hold the friction are a bit to tight and - what I did with my old Toshiba was adjusted the friction tension so that the hinges are not over stressed - this is done by undoing the nuts by 90 degrees or a quarter turn and the stress is reduced...

i've got the same problem with a hp envy 13-ad141tu. Where do i find replacement parts from? It's missing a lot of the screws as well. Cheers

I start on eBay, the back of the screen is called the Lid, so search for "hp 13-ad lid". If you can't find a match, next port of call is Aliexpress, who usually have everything if you don't mind waiting for china shipping.

Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 removable was designed exactly for these applications and holds the screws in until you remove them with a screwdriver. If you applied too much and the screw doesn’t come out use a little heat gun or the tip of a soldering iron until it softens up and you can get the screw out. This used to happen with Dell all the time before they learned their lesson.

@@guntherneko2857 yes I do have one but I have a full cover over both cams so when not in use the cams can't see anything. This dose nothing for the mic but I can't have it all 😂
