  • This is my quest for a good handload to shoot in my 1941 Husqvarna Swedish Mauser. In this video I am using Winchester StaBall 6.5 powder and Hornady 140gr. BTHP bullets. I go through the step of developing a load and then test it to see how it worked. This is why I enjoy the hobby of handloading and hope to continue this series in my upcoming videos.
    Thanks for Watching.

    Love the Mauser M96. But that could be because I have been given two of them for free. One rebuilt 50 years ago to hunting and one kept for target shooting on range. I was also given a lot of Norma "Silvertorped" a really god target cartridge - long gone. And you are absolutely correct, the swedish army more or less gave all of theirs 6,5x55 away for free to shooting clubs, who also was given very large amount of ammo. In the beginning, when I started shooting, there was plenty of free ammo to get. But those days are long gone. And yes I live in sweden.

      Awesome. Thank you for the comment. I consider the Swedish Mauser the best Mauser and the 6.5X55 the best cartridge.

      Just to follow up, after sighting in for a hunt and I'm satified with the results, that is why I don't clean the barrel.

    I'm doing a similar workup for my Husquvarna CG63 (factory remake 26" heavy barrel etc) I took it out and shot a 3 round group of under 3/4 MOA spread laterally Federal moly 140 grain. I just loaded some Hornady 140 Interlocks, I'll also be doing a batch of Lapua 139 Scenars.

    Appreciate your videos, enough detail and clearly explained. I have a Husqvarna M38 on its way, but I've not reloaded before. I've got a Lyman press & scale I've use for black powder, but debating to make the investment in other items I'd need for my smokeless guns. You helped me better understand what I would need & the process. Thank you

      Glad it was helpful. I did overkill for this video. Dies,calipers, and the Lee case trimming tool is all you would really need if you have a press and scale. Congrats on the rifle and good luck with it.

      @@pastorbill714 They are good to have to keep your brass clean. You can clean the primer pocket with a small Lee tool and wipe the outsides of the off with a towel and it should be fine for several firings.

    🇦🇺😎👍Mate when I saw your group I thought that was a terrible effort only to realise you were using open sights. You did well. Last weekend I tried PPU factory ammo 6.5x55 139grain spbt and I managed 19mm at 100 yards. People say that stuffs junk but perhaps you might get good results in your rig. I’ve heard the brass is good for reloading though. Good video , I like your setup.😎✌

    • @kyfirearms
      @kyfirearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PPU is very good ammo in my experience. I have other PPU brass for some of my other mil-surps and it is very good brass. Swedish Mausers are great guns and hopefully I can get my groups to tighten up. Thanks again for the comment.

    Good stuff, seeing the next rifle with the same load should be interesting. That chrono was real close and probably why one didn’t pick up, I swore I saw it move with the blast. 😂👍

    • @kyfirearms
      @kyfirearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I had the chrono too close. It was rocking and rolling with each shot. It will be interesting to compare the 24 inch barrel to the 29 inch barrel on the long rifle. Thanks again, take care.

  • @LegacyOutdoors88

    This is a great combo. You will find better accuracy at a higher charge weight for this rifle. Hodgdon lists 45grs max for a Krag action which is a bit lower than a Gustav or modern action. I’m a little over 48grs with velocities around 2900fps. 1/2”groups or less.

    Man. Now I know where to find all the powder!😅 Seriously though I like your approach. You found a node low in the powder charge range. did you look for a node closer to the top of the charge weight range? Sometimes best accuracy can be found at or near the top of the range. Good and interesting work.

    • @kyfirearms
      @kyfirearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HaHa, I have some powder. Well I just picked out a few charges in the middle of the range to try out. The max listed charge was 45 grains and I went up to 44.4. I could have went up to 45 or 44.8 but just didn't want to push it with this rifle and the fact that I had never used that powder before. I am thinking it may increase with a longer barrel, hopefully I will get to put that to the test. Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it.

      I only used the Lee lenght pin. The cutter is a Lyman part. I think RCBS makes the cutter as well and you can use the Lee holder and lenght pin.

    just my opinion which don't mount to much, but I think you're wasting time and money handloading to shoot open sights. I mean, what's the point? Any commercial load would give the same results. Mean no offense. Just my opinion. Have a Carl Gustav M96 customized to a hunting rifle that shoots Federal Power-Shok 140gr and Nosler Accubond 140gr under 3/4".

    That is my next project, doing a LD for M96B and find a node and see how accurate it is. For the mean time, I will end up loaded a bunch close to the factory ammunition velocities using OTM/SMKs. Depending on what type of groups I get with it, I might end up using it for military style matches. Been entertaining the idea of casting 140 grain bullets and see how they perform in both my M96B and my Kimber chambered in the 6.5CM.
