I have a 67 400 firebird my mother bought new on may 28, 1967. I was with her and she was about to buy a 326 2bbl with powerglide, AC and vinyl top. A truckload of new cars came in and there it sat, a red 400/turbo400 and it was slightly cheaper than the 326 car. I told my mom to get the red one instead and thank God she listened. It had no AC but did have the 400 HO engine with 670 heads. It also had monoleaf springs and a single traction bar. I still own it to this day. I was 5yo the day she bought it and I inherited it 10 years later.

I have a '67 Firebird 400 convertible. My grandfather bought it new in 67 for my grandmother who never drove it because it has a 3 speed, manual steering, manual brakes. My grandfather died in 1997 and my grandmother gave me the car about 7 years ago. I have the original wheel covers and the dealer plate frame. Has a factory installed tach on the hood.

Nice car and video. I've owned four 1968 Firebirds, two Sprints, one 350, and one 400. I sold my last one in the late 80s, but not a year goes by that I don't think about getting another one. A very simple quick and dirty way to confirm if your 1967 or 1968 Firebird originally came with a V8 or a 6 cylinder is to just glance at the VIN number through the front window on the driver's side dash. If the car came with a V8, the last 6 digits (representing the sequential production number) of the VIN will start with the number 1. If it came with a 6 cylinder, then the last 6 digits will start with a 6. Everything from that point becomes detective work and requires either a lot of knowledge or a call to PHS because so many of these cars have been modded or repaired over the years. Regarding 400 style hoods, it was and still is a very common "upgrade" on non-400 cars. Why? Because it's a better looking hood. It's very common to see first gen Firebirds with 400 hoods and non-400 front bumpers. FYI, that 'Car Billing History' document shown around time mark 10:50 on your video is the most important document to confirm a numbers matching car for 1967 and 1968 Firebirds (there's no other way, so if you care about numbers matching, that document alone is worth the $100). Notice that 6-digit 'Engine Unit Number' code, 471249, in about the middle of the document. If you had the original 400 engine, you would find that exact 6-digit number stamped on the front of the block just under the parting line where the head meets the block on the passenger side, along with a 2-digit engine code, in your case YT. In 1967, YT would be a 325HP 400 Automatic car. In 1968, the YT code 400 increased to 330 HP. There are a lot of those codes as you can see in your documents depending on if the engine was a 326, 350, 350 HO, 400, 400 HO, 400 Ram Air, 400 Ram Air II, etc.. If you find one in the wild, you might have to scrap off a lot of oily gunk to see those codes, but they are always there. Pontiac eventually started putting the entire VIN number on the engine blocks. I'm about 75-80% confident that it was in 1969 and later (might have been 1970 though 'cause I'm gett'n old and memory fades).

I bought a '67 Firebird 400 in 1979 that I wish I still owned. It was coronado gold with a white vinyl top. The interior was gold with a floor shifted turbo 400 and a 12 bolt rea end with 4:10 grears. It also had power windows and a rear antenna.

Was I led down the wrong path that the Vin can speak volumes, but the body tag is needed but only gives you a small amount? Being a fisher body that it may give you a color code, Alpha and numeric for say a Z28, or sport model. things that fisher builds to. Glad you got the real scoop on your Firebird. Its great you're bringing it back to life. The fact that you know where it all started from puts it in a whole other level of cool.

Congratulations on your discovery. There were 18,698- 400 Firebirds built, but there are very few remaining. I'd love to know how many still exist and how many have there original drive train.
I have a 67 400 4sp, sporting the original lacquer Silver Glaze. It's an option delete car (no added options) with 16,243 original miles. I'm the second owner (22 years) and it's been garage kept since new. I have upgraded some needed items, like Wilwood 4 wheel disc brakes, stainless exhaust and an Edelbrock Proflo4 fuel injection system, but I kept the original parts including the exhaust system. It won't run on pump gas with the 670 heads so I buy racing fuel with no ethanol. You see VERY few 67, 68 or 69 Firebirds, even at large car shows and it's an attention getter on the street. A lot people think it's a Camaro and are surprised when they discover it's a Firebird.

the traction bar you got two if it was a 4 speed car,1 if it were a 400 automatic, the special paint is cool,it could be a 326 car .the bumper and the grill is different on 400 the arrowhead and the hocky sticks in the grill,my firebird is a real 400 car with delux inteerier A/C and 3 speed auto trans A/C cars and 400 have a bigger radiator and inserts in front of radiator for better cooling and have return line to tank.

Yep, PHS doc is great to have if you have an older Pontiac and should even tell you the selling dealer. The single traction bar was on the 400 Auto, 400 Manual had dual bars. Firstgen firebird forum contains a lot of info on these cars including decoding the tags and Color info. From your tag, built 5th week of March 67, it also had Soft-Ray tinted glass, air conditioning and console from the factory.

There was no 400 engine in the 1967 Firebird. The biggest factory engine available was the 389. My uncle who was head of the auto repair department at a Pontiac dealership hired my dad in 1964 as a mechanic. Both confirmed this information when I was in high school searching for a used late 60s Firebird.

Don't dismiss the 350 Pontiac too quickly. They can run. If you do go 400, consider putting those 350 6x4 heads on it for a little compression bump. I run a 350P with #12 heads, Voodoo cam, fuel injection, 2k stall TH350, 8.5 rear with 3.73's. It's plenty to make you a menace to society!

I currently own a '67 with a 400. 400's and 428's are extremely hard to find due to the crankshaft. Most Pontiac guys I know are using 455's as replacement motors. All blocks are the same from 326 to 455 so nobody can tell the difference. Building a 455 is much less expensive than building a 400 or 428. Setting that car back to exactly what the PHS build sheets say would be cool. However, I would do disc brakes, fuel injection and a few other modern upgrades. I did. My car is much better to drive and way more fun! Thanks for the video. Well done!!!
(FYI. If the front bumper doesn't have the "Arrowhead" it could also be a 326, 326HO. The 400 is the only one that got the "Arrowhead".)

The 67 Firebirds with 4 barrel V8's had two track bars (traction bars) on the rear. The 2 barrel 326 and the 6 cylinder had one track bar. On a 67 Camaro, the 4 barrel V8's had one track bar on the rear and the other 67 Camaros had no track bars. The 2 barrel 326 Firebird usually has brackets on the rear axle housing for 2 track bars, but the body has only one bracket. All 1968 Firebird had multi-leaf, but only 4 barrel 68 Camaros had multi-leaf. The 400 HO wasn't available in the 67 Firebird, the 400 Ram Air was and the 350hp 396 wasn't available in the 67 Camaro, but the 375hp 396 was.

@@ArrowheadGarage That's possible. The rear axle should have both brackets. Does that body have only one bracket? The 67 Firebird came out late in the 67 model year, but it was reported that 4 barrel engines got two bars. Maybe 4 barrel manual models, including manual 326 HO models. All lesser engines got one bar, even 2 barrel 326 models. A 326 HO manual should have 2 bars, not just 400's.

Boy, whoever you first listened to on the internet didn't know crap about Firebirds. First clue, the 3F on the trim tag tells you it's a 400 car. The fuel line with a return line was only on cars that came with quadrajets, but I'm not 100% on if the Sprint had the return line. I don't believe so. As for the radius rods (traction bars) V8 auto cars got 1 bar, V8 manual Trans cars got 2 bars, and 6 cylinder manuals Trans cars got 1 bar. All 67's had the mono leafs. The only difference between a 400 front bumper and all the others is 2 holes for the emblem, that just bolts on. The chrome trim on the 400 grills is different too. It's more of a hockey stick shape. What's odd is the PHS says it had a cream top, but your trim tag says it came with a black top. Odd. Good luck with it. And 400 cars had stiffer springs and a bigger front sway bar than others. I believe most front sway bars were 11/16 and the 400 car was 13/16. It's been forever since I measured one.

first gen 400 firebirds are not exactly rare. This is due to the fact that in the late 70s to the early 80s no one including gm made sheet metal for them. everyone salvaged the 6 cylinder and the 326 cars to keep the 400s alive. back in the day you would see camaro front clips on firebirds because there was no replacement parts. myself i would love to find a ohv 6 firebird with the 4 speed.

@@ArrowheadGarage If you can't get what you need, it can be shipped. I had the original motor from the care shipped from the US to me after having it rebuilt. I can reverse the process. Not too expensive, but I am sure you can get the same for less shipping cost. It does have the 670 heads etc though.

All the 400s are the same minus the heads. Whether it a GTO or bird, unless he is looking for numbers matching

First off, WHAT???, the Vin tells you if it was a 6 or 8 cyl period, after the 5 digit code is the year, 7, then a plant ID where it was built, U for Lordstown for example, then a 1 if it's a 8cyl or 6 if it was 6cyl then the number vehicle as it was made, the 3F in the body tag usually means 400 v8, the bumper may have been replaced, right on your body tag it says Special2, that means it was an ordered color, it also looks like it was a 3sp manual, someone ordered that car to their specs. It was a base 400, not HO, the term Ram Air really didn't become used until 68 and then the 67HO became known as the RAI, it looks like the car had the rare rear antenna option, But you're right that the PHS is a MUST, many many Pontiacs are faked, especially Judges, some shops have take the entire firewall of a wrecked Judge and put it in a lemans, voila' it's a Judge and few could tell, it's got the vin and bodytag, there's quite a few punks with pages on FB trying to sell Pontiacs and quite a few major shops on the net selling Pontiacs with no vin stated, folks before you plunk down any cash, do some learning about the models, get the body tag and vin analyzers, and get a PHS done first. this is a good vin analyzer www.tpocr.com/pontiacvin5.html

On the 3 speed box, the PHS says TH400... but you're saying the original owner had the dealer or Pontiac swap them out???

"rare rare" mmmm not really because have you ever seen 18,000 cars parked all at once? A lot of cars. When you spend the $$ you will still have a non-matching numbers Firebird 400. Restore it as a driver. I own a '68 Firebird 400HO luxury Bird (tilt, bird glass tint, AC, pw) with its original motor gone. Its going together with a 68 FB 400 short block, muncie 21, and a collection of Ram Air 2 top end assembly bits- and as a driver for fun.

I'll bet there are fewer than 25% of those 400 firebirds left.

      Hello ta,
Mmmm 25% of 18000 identical model cars is well over 700 cars. That would fill a parking lot substantually. I would say closer to 50% as they are an 'image' but unappreciated car.
