I owned a 68 Firebird 400 several years ago. I think I can safely say that the stated horsepower was quit a bit higher than what has been stated here. I don’t agree that the Firebird was “the best muscle car ever”. Actually the era between the 1960s through the early 1970s The best muscle car was most likely was the 1970 Chevelle Malibu SS 454 LS6 which put out most likely around 550 horsepower, with a few Chrysler Dodges and Plymouths putting out some very serious competition also. Don’t get me wrong I love Pontiacs especially Firebirds. I drove and tested a slew of them so I am aware of what they do. I also did the same with Chevrolets.
They are not the best muscle ever! I had a 68 Firebird 400 in High School. The aftermarket speed parts were twice the price of Chevy parts. Had one Firebird and 9 Camaros because of that. The big heavy front bumper limited front end rise during launch. Not enough weight transfer to the rear tires. The first gen. Camaros are the best muscle cars of all time! In my not so humble opinion! The motors In the Pontiacs are all the same size blocks, from the 321 all the way up to the 455! Making them much heavier than the small block Chevy.

Had one of these with a small block. I've owned lots of cars since 1967. This was by far my favorite.
You need to edit out the Pontiac lemans clips ! lol
I had 3 firebirds in High School, two 67s (one was a red Firebird 400), and one 68. The 68 was a rare sprint convertible with the HO 250/4bbl.
