Worst part of dealing with bedbugs is you are paranoid even years after you are free of them. Lord, there are days I still wanna prepare the vacuum and flip the mattress up just to do a sweep.
omg i know! When i moved into my apartment it was infested. I couldnt sleep and kept feeling imaginary itches. I sprayed sprayed and sprayed some more and finally got rid of them. almost a year later though i found one crawling out of the drain in my bathroom sink, very unusual for bed bugs. still freaked!
@@ryanblack2986 definately should spray again! Took us 2 years to rid ours we got from a couch we bought from a really nice home. Felt bites and looked and it was infested. That gave me ptsd for any used items lol. 2 damn years
It's been a year since I left the CCC housing that gave me bed bugs and I'm still waking up in cold sweats swatting imaginary bugs. Not that squashing them kills them. You have to crush them between your nails or dump caustic chemicals on them etc.

1:24 The “You are mostly bacteria” fact has since been corrected. You actually have about the same number of human cells and bacteria cells, but you get rid of most of that bacteria every time you defecate.

Just seeing 2012 Hank shows that the man was made for being a presenter. He is so natural at it. His little tics and speaking style haven't changed at all over the years.

Oh, the worms part made me remember something very sad. I was watching a veterinarian show and owners came in with a very lethargic bearded dragon. Owners of any animal, be sure to get your pet checked regularly for parasites! (something gross follows)

How tf did those owners not notice it much earlier because we both know that a parasitic infection like that takes a long time to develop with plenty of signs and symptoms along the way.
@@peggedyourdad9560 Idk how familiar you are with reptiles but it can be incredibly difficult to read their body language and they rarely look like they're sick or in pain, even though they are. Obviously there are still signs and symptoms to look out for but they're easy to miss, especially for an inexperienced owner!
@@char1211 I’m decently familiar with keeping reptiles, I have a normal bp and 2 leopard geckos. They definitely don’t act like how you’d expect them to if they’re not well, but in my experience any sudden behavior change is pretty big sign that something’s not right. I think this where just being familiar with both the species and individual becomes especially important. I will admit though that I do still have to give my guys a good look-over every once in a while to check for issues, that’s actually how I caught the very early signs of a scale infection on my bp before it became to big to deal with at home (he’s fine now btw after about 2 weeks of nightly iodine baths). I still stand by what I said, if they actually cared to pay attention they would’ve noticed there was something up before that point.

Since toxoplasma gondii infection correlates with an increase risk of depression and self-harm in humans, might it not cause the same in rats? So maybe infected rats become suicidal. It's not that they're suddenly cat-loving; they're probably like "just take me I don't care anymore".

When i hear about helpful worms i have to think about that one Futurama episode where Fry got worms by eating a black tomato slice thinking he ate a chocolate cookie. The worms he got from it made him 100% healthy and even helped him grow some muscles. Back then i wanted those worms too.

They even made him heal wounds in seconds and trimmed his brain to make him smarter. I wouldn't mind worms if they made me superhuman.
It's worth pointing out about toxoplasmosis that the eggs shed in the faeces don't become infective for 1-5 days so fresh faeces isn't infective. It's microscopic faecal residue that might get on your cats paws and then gets shed wherever the cat goes that's infective.
Clean out the litter tray promptly, and wash your hands regularly, especially after gardening or playing outside.
I've heard that many of these cases might happen from people not washing their garden vegetables before eating or preparing them if they have a cat that goes outside.
You should also wash red meat and wash your hands after handling red meat…I was born with toxoplasmosis
And don't let your cat put their paw on your face. The cats around my house love doing that and we can't lay in peace without them coming up to us and putting their whole body over our faces.
My mom can't barely watch tv because her cat simply sits on her neck and stays there.

At my last job my boss started getting colonics and was convinced she had parasites that would need multiple colonics… could you do an episode talking about the pseudoscience that goes into colonics and misdiagnosing normal changes in our poop as parasites?

fear of parasites that aren't there are used to promote sooo much pseudoscience, that example is one of many. the whole thing with using bleach to "cure autism", for example, is connected to that. Miracle Mineral Supplements and other similar companies and people claim that autism is caused by parasites and that their products can help you get rid of them. after you take them for a while (or, most commonly, give them to your child), you might see weird little things coming out in your poop, but those things are not worms, they're parts of your intestinal lining that is being damaged severely by ingesting a type of bleach. and more recently there's been Black Oxygen Organics claiming that you're full of parasites and that the way to make it better is to.... eat some soil. some super fancy and very expensive soil with certain special nutrients in it. or to put it in your bath or something like that, according to them. which seems less dangerous than taking bleach, but it's still bad.

Interesting tidbit I learned in bio class: in areas where botflies are common, cuckoo eggs don't have to be so similar to the host bird eggs. The reason is that cuckoo chicks really love botfly larvae, so they keep their stepsiblings from getting blinded by botflies. So the host parents have an incentive to keep them around. Of course, it's not a conscious choice, just instinct.
finaly! 1 good thing about cuckoo birds, i hate them slightly less now.

I contracted toxoplasmosis when I was 11. It nearly blinded me in one eye - my vision in that eye is 20/200. I’ve sometimes wondered if I was left with any other behavioral changes.
What did you notice in terms of visual changes
So that Greys anatomy episode with the guy infecting himself with worms to treat his asthma was actually rooted in some real science
The only meds I treat my allergies and asthma with are pills and inhalers. No worms. EVER! 🤢😰

Giardia may have cured ny demographia. I was afflicted from age 13 till about 29, when I caught giardia. My most extreme form of demographia went away, then I was treated for giardiasis, and it never returned, while my sister was afflicted from 3 till her death at 47. Mine was so severe, vibrations made
my skin swell. You could write your name on me, and in minutes, it looked like The Exorcist. An ice cube would bring a wealt, while winter cold would make my extremities swell solid. A sunlamp would bring body wide wealts. I don't know if having giardia saved me from all that, but it seems likely, as this was all an Ig-E overreaction.

I have what I suspect to potentially be delusional parasitosis (or perhaps some form of parasite related health anxiety/ ocd) yet I find myself endlessly consuming like university level parasitology material bc I tell myself that knowledge is power (I should seriously stop) but thank you for the trigger warning ❤

having been on a long-term course of extreme antibiotics, stomach bacteria is definitely important and it can be hard to eat or even keep food down without them.
Would you guys be able to do a video on ‘Dermatomyositis’? My wife is afflicted with this at 25, and while I’ve done my own research, I’d like to hear a more educated breakdown of the disease.
I dont want to scare or worry you but mt Aunt died from dermatomyositis in her early 40s. It took a long time for them to diagnose it because its so rare. I was only a kid then in the mid 90s, but I remember how swollen she was, especially her face. They had her on lots of Prednisone. Its a strange thing since it can go away completely or cause a lot of dis-ease.
@@ryanblack2986 yes, they have her on lots of steroids, she's not swollen but she does have rash and muscle weakness. Definitely deal with things day to day but I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about it.
Has nothing to do w parasites so worry not! It's a rare agressive type of inflammatory autoimmune disease that attacks primarily muscles and also has a characteristic red rash over the knuckles called gottrons papules as well as the eyelids and any extensor surfaces (elbow, knee ect) it is linked to a high-end risk of certain cancers as well. The cause of this is unknown. Hopefully ur wife is doing well!
@@laanaalove I am aware, at the time it was on my mind and thought I’d ask. She is doing okay at the moment just lots of medication. Some get the rash some get the muscle weakness, she got both. Overall much better now than when it began.

I Love and am Equally freaked out by parasites but I'm so facinated to learn and study all about them. I hope one day we learn how to help anyone infected by any given parasites that we currently have trouble treating a diagnosing.

This has been disproved times and times again.
The original cited research was based on mostly guts (and bacteria in guts) where the 10-1 ratio might very well be true, however in general its more like 50-50
Also, no parasite is capable (or fish for that matter) of swimming or flying or whatever in your urethra. This was an urban legend

The most horrific parasite story I think I’ve ever heard of was of a young man in Australia who( as a joke among his friends) was dared, or made a bet somewhat with his friend group one day that he would eat a garden snail or garden slug. Within a very short time he was infested with a parasite present and common in them that destroyed his brain. It was so senseless, mind-blowing and tragic…. It pays to pay attention to any pathways and orifices that lead into your body and be mindful of all microscopic or native things in nature.
Its called Rat Lungworm Disease. And the boy slipped into a coma from the brain eating amoeba I believe it was anyway he died a slow and painful death. Very tragic, my heart breaks to know it was so innocent yet so painful and ultimately fatal.
Tapeworms are horrid. I have 2 cats and they've both had tapeworm at least 2 times. Though, we thankfully found out almost right away and were able to get rid of them with just some tapeworm tablet medicine

my first thought hearing about the cat parasite possibly influencing our love for them was “aw that’s fine they’re cute I’ll let them, as a treat”. maybe those scientists really are onto something
Actually, Toxoplasmosis doesn't say to a rat, "Look at the beautiful kitty. Wouldn't you like to snuggle up to it? Don't be afraid, it's just a nice friendly cat". The parasite is much trickier than that. Rats know the scent of cat pee and will avoid places that smell of it. They can even sometimes smell whatever few drops remain on the cat's fur after it pees. Naturally they will run away from this scent which is one reason cats have to sneak up on rats and then pounce. However, toxo makes the rats LOVE the smell of cat pee and they will run towards it and even seek it our thereby giving the cat a nice tasty treat and continuing their life cycle. I don't know what category of parasitism this comes under but probably the mutualistic kind since both the cat and the toxo benefit from the arrangement.

It works for bedbugs, if someone takes the human form at human doseage, which is 0.2mg per ten pounds bodyweight per day. I used it a few years ago, 3mg every 5 days, for three months, while heat treating the bed, and got rid of them, after a miserable 7 year infestation. My doctor was skeptical, but this _is_ a parasite, and I had tried literally everything on the market, except throwing everything away and burning my house down. Meanwhile, covidiots are their own parasites. I'm fully vaxxed, about to get my booster, masked when necessary, because I'm not an a**hole.

I can tell you from experience that Toxoplasmosis can affect humans. I know because I had Toxoplasmosis in my mother's womb every time she ate raw hamburger meat in the form of steak tartare. She wasn't affected but my retinas wound up severely scarred because of it.
I only have one functional eye that is nearsighted, and the other eye is like looking through a keyhole sideways so not usable.
I've heard about other people who were completely blind due to Toxoplasmosis so I consider myself fortunate to have what sight I do.
Never take what you have for granted. It's too easy to lose those things. God bless you all. 🙏♥️

Actually, that parasite that makes rats become attracted to cats could also help to explain cat hoarding.

The only way to properly test it would to infect someone with the parasite and then detrmine if it makes them like cats more. Very unlikely to happen.
@@originalbillyspeed1 another option could be to test someone who is already a cat hoarder and try and eliminate the parasites from their system and then see if they still have an interest in hoarding cats.
@@Dogtroll That wouldn't necessarily be conclusive. It's possible the parasite could cause permanent changes.
@@originalbillyspeed1 well ethically speaking if it's possible to get rid of the parasites then it might be more appropriate to infect someone with them see if it has an effect then cure them. Also, I was thinking that you might have to take into account relativity meaning if a person has never shown any interest in cats they're not likely to become a cat hoarder but they might be more likely to pet their neighbors cat, whereas if a person started out being fond of cats they could possibly be the ones that wind up being cat hoarders.

Okay, something that really bothers me here: parasitism is *specifically* when a symbiotic organism is harmful to its host. Parasites by definition cannot be neutral or beneficial for the host. Don't use the word "parasite" for commensalistic or mutualistic symbiotes!

They didn't even get into the fungi that take over brains, forcing some animals to surrender themselves to predators. That's usually ants, but the X-Files used that trope, and it was scary af.

I think i could have toxoplasmosis then, i live with too many cats and nothing short of a jumpscare even gets a start out of me, and everyone i know says i dont get scared normally, my friends were all getting high out in the dark and seeing shadows move because of the wind and my headlights while im sitting there still having fun

Yes ! it going on one month that I got rid of the three parasite all the wanted it place to live, beer, smokes , food and somebody to pay all bills. My life is moving forward with out them.

What bothers me is how little people enjoy learning. And because of that.. when I was sold sick puppies with mites and I caught them (evolved to be transmittable to humans also know as scabies).. I was treated like a criminal and a nasty person by everyone once they found out about it having occurred. It really gets under my skin.
This happened when we first discovered it in the 1971. And it gave us a better way to understand about our bodies and minds.😱😍
