Although half reps are often considered "ego lifting", they can be done safely for fitness benefits!
Not to mention - "full" range of motion is often a bit arbitrary. For example, full push-ups can stop with your upper arms parallel to the ground, when your chest touches the ground, or even deeper if you're elevated.
Just make sure you can control the weight (or resistance) in that range of motion and try to avoid stabbing pain! Pain and lack of control are signs you might want to use less weight.
    Have a wonderful day!
PS: someone asked if this applies to weighted work too - and it does! Bodyweight, dumbbells, kettlebells etc are all types of resistance. As long you can handle the weight SAFELY in that range of motion, then it's almost always okay. This concept actually isn't very controversial at all, in my opinion. Just not very common compared to "regular" lifting.
I'll add my lengthy original response below:
"I think that's a great point to bring up! My opinion is that there's not as much difference as one might think! After all, some people's bodyweight is basically mine + 4 plates (granted that's pretty rare, but there are plenty of people 100 or 200lb heavier than I am). We'll always be stronger in some parts of our ROM relative to other parts. That combined with joint-angle specificity is a good enough reason for people to train that range with extra weight! For example, some Olympic sprinters or those who want to increase vertical leap might do quarter squats with very high weight! But you bring up a good implication about safety - if you can't do it with the good form you want, then you need to lower the weight regardless of the ROM! To add a bit (sorry this seems rambly, but IG comments don't seem to have linebreaks, haha), this is similar to how some people do lifts with variable resistance like chains or resistance bands! Especially with squats, this would add significant extra weight/resistance to your top ROM, along with the benefits that come with that. It doesn't have to be huge. Even 25-50lb would be different. So to summarize, yes definitely be safe when using heavy loads. However, while heavy loads and short ROM is often correlated with unsafe behavior, there are definitely ways to utilize them safely. Not to mention the benefits of isometrics which always have the potential for higher forces than moving exercises because you can always hold more than you can lift! Of course, you don't need to do this at all if you don't want. Following the rule of "only lift what you can handle through a relatively* full ROM" can still yield a lifetime of great results. Thanks for bringing this up!"

As a teen I got reprimanded by a coach for not doing deep enough push-ups. I stopped where my chest hit the ground because he wanted fast push-ups and I didn't want bruised boobs, as mine are pretty big. My friend (who was much more outspoken than me) dared the coach to try deep push-ups with two waterballoons under his tank top, and he busted one of the balloons trying to "show me it's not that bad". And then there was the time I had to explain to my doctor I was really suffering from too little range of motion after an injury when what I could do was still considered normal. Thank you- I'm too tall + inflexible for angled pushups and can only do floor pushups with partial reps and with a really wide base. I always feel awful doing pushups because I physically cannot do what everyone says I should be doing online lol. I always see big progress in partial reps but sometimes aren't as confident in my progress as I should be because most say that partial range of motion degrades your strength instead

Thank you. As someone who has to be extremely careful and slow with progression (lots of health issues that make it complicated), it’s really discouraging seeing others who go all the way and say that unless you do that, you’re not doing it right. It’s great that they can go all the way, but for a lot of us that isn’t safe or possible. This makes me feel a lot better and not like so much of a failure for having to make progress slower than others

it's awesome hearing someone give information for people that don't do the full range. It can be demoralizing when someone says you're not doing it right when you're doing a different version. It's nice to know that there are people like you that give the actual information rather than just bringing others down
