His ball tracking skills are so perfect that just prior to contact his head is moving exactly inverse to his hitting arm. And then his head stays locked on the point of contact until the swing is complete. It's like somebody wrote an algorithm for the perfect tennis player.
You people are awesome!! Been trying to adjust my backhand (I’ve been “over-swinging) and saw one of your training videos where Federer appears, not this one. Met with my coach today..... between my lesson and this video, I now totally get what I was doing wrong!!!! Thanks all!
Greatest footage I've seen on form, footwork...thank you for sharing...been teaching tennis for 25yrs and I'm just now figuring out what Feder does with the racquet before contact...amazing on the forehand and the backhand is to die for...JL teaching tennis in Texas.
The slow-mo footage to end all slow-mo footage: What tennis ball striking mastery looks like (still tho the essence is in what you can't 'see' him do or not do, like when musicians appreciate notes that 'aren't' played...haha...listening for things that aren't said etc....i'll say this though, Thanks Iain!! ; )
This is GREAT! Poetry in motion! Every player just learning how to play should watch this more than once to see what's really going on in hitting tennis shots, footwork, where power really comes from, racket angles and more. Seasoned players can appreciate it, too. What a GREAT IDEA for an instructional video and I agree, it really is art, too.! Some music could be nice as an option you can mute or not. :) Brad
Watching this in 2019 anyone? «Oh my gaaad...» That's the most accurate representation of what it feels like to watch Federer play for the first time (especially). Did the same to me in 2012 while I had marvelled at his graceful power, pristine touch, natural shot making abilities, and gliding footwork for more than five years on TV. This man truly is one of the best sportsmen ever, arguably the best. Even more impressive closing in on his 40's: unbelievable!
Completely flawless. He makes it looks so easy :) Look at his forehand and his backhand, they are just beautifull. Thanks for making this video, Essential Tennis :)
***** Hi, may I ask you a little question about the forehand technique? I've heard there are 2 types of forehand: bend arm forhand and straigth arm forehand, but I don't know what to choose, can you give me some advices please? Thank you :)
Brian, it's Ted Douglas; if you are in SF let's play some! I agree 100% with your comments. Also - Check out Johnny Mac's shotmaking and body techniques, as well. The Genius left clues; as does Roger (The Other Genius)
J'ai autant appris en le regardant jouer qu'en allant à mes entraînements, sérieusement cet homme est une bénédiction pour ce sport. Quand j'arrive un tout petit peu à lui ressembler mes coups sont parfaits :)
In the very moment of heating the ball, his head remains no movement, so that no influence of shoulders and arm. I tried this, but should look after immediatly, after the ball is away
I've been going over the specs & the 90" is heavier for better control. I've been playing with a Pro Staff Classic 95" for years, so maybe it's better if I stuck to that one. But, I had the new one (95") in my hands a couple of days earlier, man, those things have become really light. That's why I'm considering a 90"
The shoulder flexibility and range of motion in his shoulder joint is sick. This is one commonality i see separating the pros from.....well...the rest of us.
i dont' see anything extraordinary about fed's shoulder flexibility. I see it a little bit in his wrist. Look at his serve, a lot of other players have much deeper bends in their shoulder. Roddick for instance. I think fed's coordination and technique is just next level and it gives you the illusion that his shoulder has this super range.
Favourites, people? If you'd care to share your voice. For me, so far that I've watched, the backhand at 3:00 is pretty sweet. Imagine trying to stay with that, I can sorta imagine facing that ball in a rally and just feeling the spirit drop a little to feel that he'd be so ready after that swing..
Nebulak187 you don't know what you're talking about. Federer dominated for a decade because of his exceptional forehand and backhand techniques, footwork and every thing else. His accomplishments -- 17 grand slams speak for themselves dude.
see how long his eyes are on the balls even after the hit points, that's the secret to generate more spin, but it's only one thing of many Roger's tricks and many tricks make the greatness.
thank you ian, incredible footage! Notice roger tracks the ball differently the just about anyone I have ever seen, doesn't watch the ball hit the racket he watches the racket hit the ball from behind the string bed. Most good players "try" to watch the ball into the racket, federer "actually" sees the racket hit the ball from behind the strings I have tried this "technique" myself but my arms are not long enough and I wind up on my back foot Thanks again for this great clip
People tease me all the time why I use pro's heavy racquet while they use nadal's pro racquet? I notice that federer has small muscle compared to nadal's massive muscle. I've also noticed that when I tried to use nadal's racquet, it hurts my arm. So should I continue using 12oz 90 federers racquet and swing exactly like how he swing? Like stretch arm.
0:17 Backhand
9:06 Forehand
19:00 Serve
21:21 Backhand Volley
22:15 Overhead
23:40 Forehand Volley
You're welcome.
Thk
I play tennis at this pace.
daweller Juanda had trips
Did u improve?
yup@@TheBigJoshua21
😂😂😂😂

Just watched some fine art.
Superb video. Great framing. No tricks or cuts. Just perfect. Better by far than any tv coverage with all their cameras & the latest technology.
Roger is beyond words.... exceptionally flawless...
You people are awesome!! Been trying to adjust my backhand (I’ve been “over-swinging) and saw one of your training videos where Federer appears, not this one. Met with my coach today..... between my lesson and this video, I now totally get what I was doing wrong!!!! Thanks all!
A magician with a tennis racquet in hand and writes poem with it when he out there at the court.... A legend who cannot be described in words...
Well you kind of just did describe him in words...
godamn did you butcher this statement. Cringe-o-meter is at the max.
Awesome to watch. Majestic tennis, balance and movement is sublime.
Don't ever delete this, this the greatest video on TH-cam
Does he hit his forehand and backhand with an eastern grip?
Greatest footage I've seen on form, footwork...thank you for sharing...been teaching tennis for 25yrs and I'm just now figuring out what Feder does with the racquet before contact...amazing on the forehand and the backhand is to die for...JL teaching tennis in Texas.
No need music, this is great for me. If you want your own music, play your favorite song while watching it. Great video. Thanks again.
That´s for sure the best Fed´s compilation so far.
Never raises his head post impact!! What a lesson!
Very nice Ian, well done. You can never get tired watching Fed's masterful strokes and footwork.
This is so relaxing.. Im watching it on my laptop while falling asleep.. Thinking about hitting like that. Great!! Finally a long video!!
The slow-mo footage to end all slow-mo footage: What tennis ball striking mastery looks like (still tho the essence is in what you can't 'see' him do or not do, like when musicians appreciate notes that 'aren't' played...haha...listening for things that aren't said etc....i'll say this though, Thanks Iain!! ; )
6:37 is a pearl of a return. to hit those in games are so sweet.
Full Grace! Full Technic! Full GOAT!

Awesome clip! His footwork gave me understanding the skill of tennis.
reachmitch Good to hear!
What brand or equipment did you use?

Thanks a lot this is 100 times useful than all those tennis videos lessons i take
19:08 Notice people from the other court looking at Roger...the effect of his style, skill, and charisma.
Omg thank you for this
My favourite slow-motion video ever.
Dear Federe you are my The Dream, Hope, Envy and Text!
Que buena edición...una clase maestra!!!
I am gonna cry. This is so beautiful!!!
Great movement, beautiful to watch, supurb timing -- both the Rolex watch and Federer, ha
LOL, that was a awesome comment
Completely flawless. He makes it looks so easy :) Look at his forehand and his backhand, they are just beautifull. Thanks for making this video, Essential Tennis :)

A pleasure to watch, this is art. Federer is peRFect.
velmi pekne udery
pomohlo mi to
SO good, helpful, beautiful.
I am just so amazed at how these guys are able to apply so much topspin even on high balls.
I wish this old schooler could do this!
Thank you very much!!!I always wanted this kind of video of Federer.
Brian, it's Ted Douglas; if you are in SF let's play some! I agree 100% with your comments. Also - Check out Johnny Mac's shotmaking and body techniques, as well. The Genius left clues; as does Roger (The Other Genius)

The amazing backhand
Great video. Thank you so much for uploading.

Really really thank you for these videos.
Ian, you are the best cameraman with the best camera, or at least a good one.
Hey I appreciate that....I busted my butt for all that slow motion footage, haha.
Excellent .. Thanks
The best compilation ever!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for posting these vids.

This needs time stamps:
Backhand 0:00
Forehand 9:06
Serve 19:00
Volley 21:24
Overhead 22:16
Volley... 23:15
Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you for posting this, his right arm opens very wide
Thx for the insight & user-advice, I think its best if I'd stick with the 95"
In slow motion life looks more beautiful

It.s so good!!!!!!!!
