I knew a man who was killed cutting open a transmission fluid (oil)barrel just as you did. He should have known better because of his trade, but he got in a hurry.I cannot stress enough that it only takes a few grams of vaporized hydrocarbons mixed with air to for the LEL (lower explosive limit) of many oils and combustable hydrocarbons. Even 'empty drums contain combustable traces and plastic coatings. Washing will not remove the traces. Fill the drum up with water to the cut line or fill the drum with an inert gas.
Pump exhaust gas from a lawn more into it.
My preferred method of ensuring I don't hey blown up is to safely burn it out intentionally. I use this method especially when cutting old gas bottles for up-cycling. It may sound scary but a little understanding and a lot of careful-ing ensures no explosion.
For gas (in my case propane) bottles remove the valve ensemble with a wrench, a good long blast with compressed air (minutes NOT seconds!) ignite any remaining vapors in bottle with a remote ignition device of any type --- I made an electric spark ignitor very simply from an old sparkplug and wire, but there's no doubt dozens of other options. It's worth noting that the spark ignitor will fail to ignite the propane if there still an enormous concentration of gas in the bottle, so it's only for AFTER degassing the bottle with compressed air.
For barrels as shown it's even simpler. If the ambient temperature is lower that the vapor point of the oil/fuel inside its super fast; a quick flush with compressed air "just in case" there are vapors still inside from previous heat cycling. Then light it on fire deliberately while cutting. It's most likely there will not be enough residue to light, even intentionally, so I like to use methyl hydrate alcohol. Poor in a bit, light it, start cutting. It might sound weird but if it's actively burning inside its impossible for it to explode from vapor ignition.
May sound strange but both are explosion safe methods and don't involve waiting for water to fill the volume of the vessel in question. For small propane tank/bottles it's maybe not so bad. But 200L/55gal is a whole lot of volume to fill through a garden hose.
It is worth noting though, if you want 100% dummy proof, no thinking required, guaranteed to to get the "safety guy" sign off, your pretty much left with water or a noble gas fill. So use good judgment in choosing a boom-proof protocol folks!
Started watching the thumbnail of this video and right away I saw problem.
Never ever ever cut a barrel like this. Especially one that contained a petroleum product or really anything for that matter. Please let me explain before skipping this comment because what I have to say could save your life.
First thing is I knew someone who died because of doing this exact same thing, cutting open a barrel with a grinder or circular saw. It exploded and ripped him in half. He died slowly, like hours.
Here is why. Specifically in the case of this video, that barrel used have engine oil in it, which is flammable if you didn't know. And cutting it with a tool that creates spark and may produce a static charge makes this a potential bomb. Especially more dangerous keeping the barrel openings closed.
Prepare for capital letters.
CUTTING STEEL AND PLASTIC BARRELS WITH POWER TOOLS CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS REGARDLESS OF ITS CONTENTS.
I am not kidding about this. Don't do this ever, not at work, not at home, not at your grandma's house, never.
First off you can't clean out a closed top barrel like this one. It is nearly impossible to remove all flammable materials from a barrel like this. And to create an explosion you only need a little bit of flammable material to make this thing blow up. I don't care what sort of precautions this guy took to not explode. My opinion is that without filling the barrel with water before cutting your just asking for a death sentence. Seriously.
There are tools you can use to cut open a barrel. Just not anything that can throw spark or create a static charge. Like tin snips for example, or a sheet metal cutter, but not a saw of any kind.
If you don't believe me, well I guess it's your funeral buddy.
Good luck out there. Stay safe. Don't cut closed top barrels with power tools.
I am not suggesting this guy is an idiot at all. He is more than likely just not knowledgeable of this fact, which I wasn't until this person I knew died from doing this exact same thing. Thank you for reading.
Fun fact, you can easily clean this kind of barrel, hence cut it with a grinder in a safe way.
Also, seeing how clean it is inside when it's opened at 0:38 it proves you're wrong saying it can't be cleaned properly.
I won't deny the fact people should know that they need to clean it properly tho, and maybe a tutorial to help them do so.
@@handyEliot Maybe you have the know how to clean the inside of this barrel but most do not know that it needs to be done in the first place.
My main concern is someone starts cutting into a barrel made from anything and is using a grinding wheel, of all things. The one tool that through sparks everywhere whenever they are cutting metal.
Just be safe, spend a few minutes filling this thing with water then cut it with a grinding wheel.
And jeez a Sawzall with a ferros cutting blade would work too, and throw way less sparks.
All I'm saying is this is a great way to blow yourself up with little effort. Yeah the video shows him cleaning the outside of the barrel but what good is that gonna do when your throwing molten hot sparks in a 10 foot arc.

I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how the hinges were welded to both the lid and the bracket and still were able to turn. Evidently the part where that was corrected was cut from the video.
Cool build though.

A matabo blade is already a very dangerous tool and this yahoo has used it cutting in the left side of the grinder. It might be ok on this paper thin stuff but a very bad example!!!!
