  • George was born in 1905, when his father was 25 and his mother was 27. He was an only child.
    Eve was born in 1903, when her father was 24 and her mother was 25. She had a sister that was 3 years younger than her.
    George and Eve got married in 1934.
    The earliest date we could find of George and Eve residing in the property was 1947.
    Eve sadly passed away in 1968. It was a sudden unexpected death.
    We found a box of letters that George and Eve sent to each other while George was away on duty. Always starting with Darling and ending from your guy.
    In 1970 George was awarded with an imperial service medal by her majesty the queen.
    This means George was a civil servant for 25 years plus.
    Unfortunately George sadly passed away in 1996.
    We did find a birthday card which said “To Dad” Happy Birthday love from Jen. however from research we could not find anything to indicate George and Eve having any children.

    The Painting the Blue boy by Gainsborough, my granny had a replica of that painting. Plus Frys chocolate with the cream center.
    I loved that chocolate. What a beautiful cottage, very picture box. Reminds me of Dorset. Love the beam ceilings. I'm surprised this beautiful cottage has not been sold. Plus someone is definitely looking after this home. Some very interesting pieces. But what a beauty. 👍💜💕🤗🤗🤗🇿🇦🇬🇧

They must have been really interesting people. Thanks guys for quietly covering a huge job of recording two people's lifetimes.

    Absolutely stunning! So many books. Must’ve been there past time no TV. It’s funny there were quite a few companies that are from my hometown in California. Kelloggs Heintz.
    I’m surprised there’s not more mold. It doesn’t look like there’s any. Absolutely amazing! Well it’s almost like a hoarders house but organized. Looking forward to the history.

    The stove behind the paraffin heater is a solid fuel stove for burning wood or coal, depending on what temperatures it can tolerate. That is why it has those narrow strips of heat resistant glass set into the top half, so you can see your fire.

    The thing you thought was a hot water cylinder was a pre washing machine boiler. They could be run by gas, electric or, in even earlier times, by lighting a fire under a more substantial one. You filled the boiler with water, put your sheets, and white clothes etc in and heated the water to boiling and kept it hot for a while. That took much of the dirt out. Then, using tongs, you lifted the washing into a bowl to rinse it through with soapy water, rinsed it again in two lots of clear water and hung it out to dry.
    By then, having turned off the heat source, the water had cooled a bit and coloured items could be left to soak a little before washing by hand as before.
    Arduous laundering by modern standards, but easier than all being done by hand in a big tub of cold water. That's how laundry was done when my mother was a child in the early 1920s. Grandma C's boiler ran on gas as did their room lights until 1961.

    I used to own one of the radio shack intercoms at 17:55, there is probably a smaller box that goes outside the front door and you pressed the button to speak to the other person. The muddle at 18:25 reminded me of national lampoon's Christmas vacation - I am amazed that house didn't go up in flames or the man didn't get electrocuted on those frayed cables!!. The item at 18:39 is an urn - just think of it as a large kettle - one could open the lid once boiled to soak clothes. Love the spin dryer at 24:05 - great little machines if you are hand washing clothes. That fuseboard at 25:35 is definitely not up to modern standards. You should have broken an egg from that fridge - you really were brave to open it. The Megger at 47:20 is kind of an early version of a modern multimeter - you use it to measure electrical voltages and currents. Love the vintage shortwave equipment - it should be saved not left to rot. Lots of valve equipment in the last room including a valve amplifier wired to that turntable and speakers.

    That thing hanging on the wall is a bed warmer. Before people had central heating and relied on fireplaces, people would put fireplace embers or coal in the warmers and warm their beds up before tucking in for the night.

    I think there's a hidden story here. There was definitely someone here after George died in 1996. Was James someone else? A son maybe? It's always so hard to pin down but there are signs of life from well after that date. Yes, quite right about that microscope and as others have pointed out, the long handled brass thing is a replica of an old bed warmer. At one time they became popular ornamental items to hang on walls in older properties with other brass or copper items. It's certainly a well-packed house with some interesting old artefacts. That hot water 'cyclinder' is what we used to call a 'copper'. It was used for boiling clothes, especially the sheets and babies' nappies in the days before we all had washing machines. Those 'Osocool' fridges are camping fridges. The cabinet upstairs with the pots in it is literally known as a 'pot cupboard' to hold the errr... overnight facilities! What an amazing early sewing machine was standing next to the bookcase! Mateus Rose wine! At one time there was scarcely a house in UK that didn't have that bottle lurking around somewhere, full or empty with a candle in it. It was the generic wine of the 70s and 80s when wine drinking first became popular. Either that or German Blue Nun or an Italian chianti with it raffia covered bottle. This was a really big explore with so much to see. There was a complete life history there. Lovely guys..... I'm happy!

    • @janettaylor153
      @janettaylor153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is actually called a copper for boiling clothes my mother had one. a tea urn is much smaller!

    • @sarahstrong7174
      @sarahstrong7174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janettaylor153 That is not a traditional copper though. A traditional copper is a permanent installation built usually of bricks, supporting a large metal vessel, which would have contained the water & possessing underneath it a firehole into which wood or possibly coal would be fed in order to heat the water. I know because I have lived in two houses with them.
      The item in the cupboard could possibly be used for boiling clothes but I have used them when doing voluntary work, to make tea for community events, entertainments, & courses & they are commonly known as tea urns in such settings, though I am sure they are known by other terms. When you are making tea for hundreds of people you need a lot of water.

    I counted about 45 power outlets, on top of that there is a fridge.kettle.toaster and a water boiler in the kitchen alone. Then there is several electric heaters. Please please tell me that board in the kitchen which looks like something Thomas Edison put there himself is not in any way shape or form responsible for powering that place. That's before I mention the artistic adapter usage Christ that place is a death trap. Mind you brilliant video. Thanks.
