    That piece is so beautiful with the water based stain. I like that you use 400 between coats rather than 220. Again , very nice!

    Thanks so much! Thoroughly informative! 💛😎
    P.S., suggest one enhancement to your videos though: make liberal use of lingering extreme closeups - of the labels of products used, wood surfaces, procedures, results. And generally keep the camera as close as possible to what you’re doing. God
    bless!

    Liked your video. Looking to switch from oil to water based stain and topcoat for my dark stained Acacia dining room table. I stripped it and neutralized the stripper with mineral spirits. I recently learned I should have used denatured alcohol to clean up at the end of the stripping process if planning on water-based stain, since mineral spirits is oil-based. I'm concerned about the water-based stain taking to the wood now. Can I just sand some more, or do I need to go out and buy denatured alcohol?

    I just watched your other video that shared you don't need to strip the wood down if using a water based stain? Or for table tops/larger surfaces would you still recommend to fully strip the wood via sanding?

    Great tutorial! Do you have suggestions for staining when scratches are deep and wide (I sanded with 80 grit and still see them)? I would like to stain dark but worry the scratches/indents will be highlighted.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the scratches are very deep, you may need to power sand them down to raw wood, very rarely have I had to use 60 grit sandpaper, but sometimes.

    What did you use for the bottom? Paint? Stain? Did you strip it first? Just sand then... please advise. Thanks

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bottom of this is painted! I just scuff sand it and then paint, check out this video for how I paint: th-cam.com/video/gT7pki7C2VM/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you- great instructional video!!!! Question: do you need to sand in between coats of finish? If so, why? I’ve seen others not sand but just apply 3 coats of finish.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do if you feel any roughness at all. Sometimes the finish brings up the grain and it can feel bumpy or a little rough, in this case a quick sanding between coats gives a gorgeous finish. If however, you have a smooth finish with the topcoat, it's not necessary to sand.

    At 3:26 you switch sandpaper and do something with that other piece where you put it on over the sandpaper and then take it off... what is that what are you doing?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a "plastic pokey thing" that pokes holes into the sandpaper so the dust collector will work! I just posted a video about my electric sander which explains this a little better - th-cam.com/video/ojFyk9nGYkg/w-d-xo.html

    Sorry to be that guy, but you have a lot of incorrect information in your video.
    When you went back and wiped the surface down with water after sanding, you need to sand again. The wood is absorbing that water and swelling. You can typically tell this by it having a fuzzy feeling to the surface. You really need to sand that down as the wood does not absorb consistently across the surface. It doesn’t need to be a rough or heavy sanding; lightly with 150 to 220 grit should do it. Instead of wiping with water, try using a dry, lint free towel, vacuum or mineral spirits if you are going to use oil based products.
    You should also look into using a shellac wash coat (shellac diluted to 1 pound cut) for sealing the wood prior to and after staining.
    Another thing you mention is putting a water based stain over an oil based finish. Remember the phrase oil and water do not mix. Yes, that applies even in wood finishing. Planning ahead for your stain, dye, glaze, topcoat, etc all need to be of the same type. Mixing an oil based over a water based or vise versa will give you a very unsatisfying experience. Choose one type and stick with it throughout the project for best results. General Finishes is one of the best manufacturers of finishing products. They also provide a lot of great information on their channel that you may want to refer to for validating most of what I’m sharing.

      My sander is set up with my shop vac as a dust collector which takes care of most of the dust! You're right, I should have a mask, I just hate them!

      Great Video! I watched it a couple times, well done on the instructions, very clear and easy to follow.
      I was hoping to know what type of Shop vac and filtration system you used with the sander. Also how good of a job keeping the dust contained? And finally would I be able to purchase on Amazon as well?
