I've got the pin and cove or perfectly round pegs. I found a piece of furniture dumped and it's my favorite piece! All the antiques I've found all have different types of dovetailing on the drawers.

      Hi Cindy,
I bought this one at an auction several years ago. It was made in Kansas.

hi - I have a desk that my dad had when I was a kid - I'm 58 now - it seems to have square nails, also the drawers are not dovetail or pin and cove - looks like just pins, no cove marks, looks like square handmade flange nuts holding the hardware on and wood keyholes... thoughts?

The only way for me to give an opinion of your piece is to see some pictures of it. Can you send some pics to info@kcauctioncompany.com

Could someone answer question please for someone that knows very little about antique furniture. I have 80+ year old children's rocking chair that was painted at least twice in two different colors. The fiberboard seat is damaged but I see I can buy a replacement. Should painted antique furniture be left alone with the multiple colors of paint or should it be stripped and refinished? If the answer is to leave it alone, should the new fiberboard chair seat be made to look like a relic like they often do with guitars? Putting a new seat on an old chair will look worse than a ripped seat I think. I am not selling this item but I don't want to ruin or devalue it since it has been in my family 80+ years. If anyone can give me some answers I'd appreciate it.

great question! This might sound like a non-answer but it really depends on the chair. Can you tell if the chair was originally painted? Or was it a natural finish that was painted after it was used for awhile?

@@tuxtiques After I wrote that comment I talked to my father about the chair. It most likely is from 1915 or earlier. That would be assuming it was bought new, which back then most items were not bought new. Looking at the bottom of the seat it was a dark natural finish. The arms are attached to the seat with a wooden key or wedge not nails or glue if that helps. Nothing is loose on it. My grandfather was a house painter with very little money back then and would often repaint chairs and metal toys such as 1920's metal Buddy L trucks each Christmas and that would be the Christmas gift. Sometimes they would get the same gift a few years in a row. Sometimes the gifts where repainted family hand-me-down items which I think this chair was because my father used until he got too big for it and I used it until I got too big for it. So there is no doubt it was painted twice. If you don't mind spending a few minutes to help me learn anything about this chair I can take some pictures and put them in a youtube video for you to look at when I have a chance.

I'd be happy to look at a video of the chair. Just let me know when it's published.

Hi, thanks for this video. I am just learning about antiques. I purchased a desk from a woman who says she bought it from an antique dealer. The drawer has no dovetail joints. Could it be an antique?

    • @tuxtiques

Hello. It could be antique and it could be brand new. Construction is a good place to start when determining age, but it is not infallible.

When I was an antique dealer some years back, I thought it MUST be able to age a piece by the style of dovetail or other joinery. However, I could never find a reference to date pieces.

If you do a Google Image search with a picture of your couch you will probably see similar examples.
