A Three-Step Approach to Treating Trauma-Related Dissociation, with Thema Bryant-Davis, PhD
Dissociation can be tricky to spot.
On top of that, it can look awfully similar to freeze or shutdown. And to complicate things further, a patient might dissociate when they’re in either one of those trauma responses.
But being able to detect when a client is dissociating is critical for providing effective treatment.
So in this video, Thema Bryant-Davis, PhD, will name three key signs of dissociation - and will walk you through a three-step process for treating it.
If you’re looking for more ways to identify and work with dissociation, take a look at the Advanced Master Program on the Treatment of Trauma.

This is the first time I’ve heard stigmatization of emotion discussed as a cause for dissociation. I have mild depersonalization very frequently, and I grew up in a household that was loving but mostly disallowed certain emotions. (Not like I’d be punished, but just like “no, we don’t feel that way”)

This is superb. The presenter discusses presentations of dissociation spanning the breadth of how it has shown up in various settings where I have worked. Being able to recognize these things as dissociative phenomena speaks to the way we may intervene and also the care we may need to take when helping a person re-embody, for example, some disembodied content. Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Great share.

I have these really intense episodes of dissociation where I just feel like everything around me doesn't really exist, like my entire idea of reality could just snap away in an instant. It's like I could wake up at any moment from a dream even though I know everything around me is real. I don't know what causes these episodes to happen but I hate them so much. (I'm having one rn btw.)

That's the derealization part. I know it sucks it's difficult because you can't really quite communicate what is going on yet it is so intense.

It sucks I know. Disassociation makes it hard for me to go in public places like the salon or grocery store. That intense disconnected feeling from the surrounding sucks. Are you able to out in public without experiencing disassociation and anxiety?

I would like this to expand to whenever we feel in a minority for any reason. Ethnicity can be seen as source of belonging rather than victimizing people around us. Feeling connected to the roots of our appearance that mother nature figured out for us according to the natural conditions for our best survival and our ancestral communities for our survival, consciousness and spiritual expression, healing and evolution is a way to reconnect with our bodies.

This is very helpful explanations for what many, including therapists, can’t effectively explain or perhaps miss out on nuances in between the more obvious dissociation displays. Had a therapist who didn’t think that I dissociate bc I didn’t just freeze and non responsive! I was more aware of it!! But I didn’t know, until recent trauma work with a psychiatrist who has really awakened my attention to how pervasive my dissociation is with CPTSD.

KISS method of how their trauma presents itself. Disembodiment In the story gaps stunted emotional development may hide with clear storytelling showing where re-embodying emotional education is best applied and destigmatized, in the session of course, but vitally in personal movement practices, THey can practice between the deeper dives of 1on1 therapy. So, often when I start talking about something emotionally charged or traumatic, I suddenly go blank. Then telling my story becomes really choppy or fragmented. My therapist said I am dissociating, but what is this type called? I used to think I was just having ADHD symptoms before it became apparent I only do this when talking about something emotionally charged.

I would hope that your therapist can tell you "what type" of dissociative symptom this is. If they cannot be more specific, you need a better trauma therapist. Explore books by Bethany Brand, Janina Fisher, and Kathy Steele. Good luck!!
