The editing of this video was incredible. Kudos to whomever does that job. The cuts to Miranda doing her sunglasses headbanging, or the spork appearing when she said she didn't forget anything.......So good.
I figured the poop kit would be a little higher on the stack or in an outside pocket. I learned early on that I didn't want to have to dig for it in an emergency.
Yeah I like my water filter, poop kit, and first aid kit accessible on an outside or top pocket. The first long break of the day I'm probably going to check on my feet and possibly add leukotape.
Outside pockets are def the best place for the poop kit...
...from personal experience.
@@aaalllen same. It all comes from the experience😂😂
@@EpwnaExeter I'm a morning go-er and do a walk around at night after setting up. If the area is too rocky, I sometimes pre-dig a hole for later use =)
@@aaalllen That is a great idea÷
REIs need a MItW "Gear Miranda And The Crew Use" display at every store. Or, at least, a MItW Approved Big Blinking Arrow for gear - especially at the various price points that you've covered over the years. Because, honestly, I'd buy whatever you told me to buy.
"I feel like i carry a lot of stuff out of fear of not having it" man what a mood
Just another super video. Neat to see someone who put emphasis on the gear that makes the trip enjoyable and not just something that is lightweight. Keep putting these out and for showing off the great northwest.
This has been so helpful! Thanks Maranda! My backpack was recently stolen and I’m so… angry, sad, frustrated etc. But, watching your videos has helped so much. Cheering me up and helping me remember what all I need to replace. Thanks for your shows. I love them!
Oh my goodness, I know it's been a year now, but I just ran across this, and it made me so sad! I hope you have been able to make replacements and continue exploring.
miranda shaking her head to show us how the sunglasses don't come off absolutely killed me LMAO
Agreed 😂
5:55 rock on!
She's a girl by a river with kaleidoscope eyes.
Same!
Hate sunglasses will never wear them wear a hat.
One recommendation from @gingeraffebald1 & I: stuff your sleep system & anything else that MUST stay dry in a white, 3mil contractor bag. Then roll up the top and pack the rest as usual. In a sudden downpour or accidental dip in a creek crossing you'll be thankful your bag & spare clothes are dry! This is especially true if you've got down insulation. The bag takes up no space and weighs nothing.
I have to say the bidet is a game changer! Thanks for sharing that, and the Kula Cloth. I felt clean and fresh my entire backpack trip. I hope more people pick up on this tip, quit leaving their tp in the wilderness.
Glad you enjoyed it Mary!
LOL! I'm cracking myself up! Looping your burp and you trying to shake your glasses off your head. Funny stuff!
Might consider an ACE wrap in the event of sprained ankle. Only a few ounces and can be loose in bag or rolled. Great video!
I always carry one, because my knees are crap.
I have watched this video 100 times because I love it so much and it always gets me in the outdoors mood
Bike packing video? That would be cool. Loved the video with your friend Pam too, hope we see her again, peace Miranda!!!
Miranda doesn't know how to ride a bike. She can only backpack.
I've watched "what's in my pack" vids ad nauseum, but this was by far the most entertaining one I've ever seen! 😂 That being said, GREAT info for the novice. You hit all the general talking points, but added the "whys" when needed for someone who wouldn't know why you'd need X item to do Y thing. Good stuff. Oh, AND I like your kit choices. No unnecessary weight where not needed and nothing too flimsy that would fail you in the woods.
The only thing I'd add (if I missed it, I'm sorry) is bear spray & bug dope (repellant). Even if there aren't bears where someone hikes, it works on mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, two legged predators, whatever. Why carry bug dope in the winter when there are no bugs? Well, it's always good to have period so it's never forgotten in the Spring and secondly, it actually makes a decent fire starter when someone would need to have a fire in a pinch believe it or not.
Halt dog spray has been shown effective on black bears, and a fraction of the weight. Save the bear spray for brown bear country
Loved the priorities for weight and practicability. Total low weight appeared achievable, but need more info on selection, storage and cleaning of wardrobe. Enjoyed Miranda's sense of humor throughout, and appreciated her experience level. Boosted my confidence that I could do the backpacking thing! Thx, Miranda.
We hope you're able to go backpacking soon ⛰️🥾

The old saying is: If a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle sees it, the deer hear it, and the bear smells it. I would much rather have the bear grabbing my food from the tent than grabbing me. I do not buy the myth that people are attacked over their toothpaste. The bear knows exactly what he is smelling, it is meat, you. The bear does not accidentally bite through your tent and grab you because he smelled your toothpaste.

If you dont carry a water bladder anymore but you still filter your water while out on trail i recommend the grayl geopress! Awesome! Water bottle filter in one. Nice set up! Hike on!!
I bought a Grayl for my bug out bag!
LOVE THIS VIDEO - Miranda, you're a riot and also clearly knowledgeable. I thoroughly enjoyed the video editing and inclusion of your adorable quirkiness. You've helped me rethink how I will pack my backpack. My first ever high school week-long backpack on spring break, I packed 55 pounds and thought everything was essential. I don't want to make so many mistakes again. Thank you for all your wonderful tips!
Well done Miranda, we needed this 😂❤👍🌱
Haha I love the sleep/special socks! We call them sacred socks!
I love your video. You've got a great sense of humor - it makes watching certain types of videos bearable. Great idea on the toilet items - I will put in my backpack like the travel bidet and Kula cloth (I've been lucky to find toilets but for those longer treks should the need arise, I'd like to be prepared!) What a great job to work at REI! Must be heaven! And thanks for showing how you pack your backpack. Your video was very informative. Thanks for sharing.
I swear, these are my favorite videos on TH-cam. Also stoked to see Goodr getting some love. Great brand considering the quality of the glasses and the super accessible price point.
I 100% agree with producer, I had a reservoir at first I loved it but soon started hating it because it was hard to clean and I could not deal with my water tasting like plastic all the time. So I switched to a stainless steel water bottle and it's the best.
Miranda, I would LOVE if REI offered a chance to camp with you! I really enjoy your videos and your fun personality. I've never been on a true long overnight hike, but would totally sign up for a chance to go on one w you as the leader. Keep up the good work!
I'm surprised not to see a raincoat? That's a top-of-the-pack essential, whatever the forecast, for me.
Especially because she does a lot of hiking in the PNW
Depends on where you're going I guess.
I’ve been binging the Miranda in the Wild videos to prep for my next camping trip. She’s such a joy to watch and the editing is a lot more entertaining compared to other camping related vids.
That's awesome! She certainly is a joy to watch and has so much knowledge to share. 😊 Enjoy!
A trick we use to do with the water is just a normal 1 l soda bottle and add fish tubing through the cap get two of them on each side of the pack and its a simple system to switch lid on the bottles. Then you can also use one to drink from other to cook from it allows you to ad flavoring to your water without messing up dinner.
Cnoc makes a 2/3L water bag with befree thread on it as well as ones with more common thread that'll fit sawyers and such.
yeah. but the hydrapak seeker is way cooler.
..Yes, one thread size for Sawyer ,, different thread size for Katadyn ....they also work great for a gravity hang system ..
@@robopecha My brand-new CNOC 42mm bladder had a pin hole leak on my first use in the BC... I was in between backpacking trips on a road trip, so I went to the REI in Bend, and picked up a seeker bag. I remember the original bags tasting very plastic-y, but the current line was fine. I removed the cap and stuck some paracord on the top grommet to help fill the bag in a lake/river.
sea to summit bowl is also amazing for bringing snacks that crush easy like chips
I like the sleeping bag idea. Drop in an 80 litre , heavy clear refuse sack.
They're not expensive . Line your empty backpack . Like a bin liner.
I'm honestly shocked your pack is so heavy. The way you were naming off items I would have figured you were closer to the 15 lbs mark. I don't think I have ever seen a video of a hiker using Bear Canisters 24/7 though. Thank you for sharing.
What a gem! Miranda is hilarious and so cheerful. You make these videos great and now I want to go hiking haha. Keep up the awesome work!
We appreciate the kind words! Happy trails ⛰️🥾
Thank you! The packing really helped for someone who hasnt packed an actual pack like this ever and only gone by throwing everything in a car :D
I've been watching all of your videos and I think the greatest thing is watching videos of you from 2018 where you were stoic and serious most of the time to the lovably goofy you right now. :D
Loved the video! Always curious about what others bring. I always bring an emergency mylar blanket, even on some (cold)dayhikes.
Eee this was the reassurance I needed for my trip! Just in time! I think I will buy a bidet now
Excellent video... most helpful for a new backpacker.
I personally use an IcePlate by Qore as a hydration solution. They are the shape of a body armour plate and we use them in our plate carriers to help us keep cool (or warm in the winter, as it can handle warm fluids) and also give us a hard plastic water container in a form factor thats similar to a water bladder. I find that I can fit it most hydration pouches in packs as well, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be body armour/plate carrier attached.
I know is being asked a year later but I have watch you pack your backpack & watch you stuff your sleeping bag into the bottom of the pack & not placing it in a stuff sack. Big question: we often have to carry all our water in as where we live & hike- best not to filter water. How do we keep any water from leaking down our packs onto our sleeping bags. We do use Nalgene bottles- so far we have been ok- but we have also used stuff sacks for our sleeping bags but it seems easier to not use them. Thanks in advance & love watching your channel & learned so much from you already!
As always, fun and great videos! I'm always checking to see what's out there even after nearly 30 years of bp-ing. And always at war with myself with the comfort vs. UL battle. I tried out the Nemo Tensor (at the Cary REI!) but opted for the comparable STS - heavier fabric, tufted construction - didn't feel like I was going to roll off of it. Odd, I love NEMO and think they're a great company but never have been able to get myself to buy any of their stuff. Weird, eh? Oh, and REI is my go-to unless I need to get proprietary UL stuff the dealers don't sell - which is a risk b/c it's hard to beat REI's customer service (especially when I'm only like 12 minutes away).
Can you do a video on hiking etiquette/good practices? Example: who yields to whom, how much water to bring, how to plan a hike, etc
FWIW to the people who like reservoirs, but find them inconvenient to clean (or to refill when your pack is full!), I started using these Vapur collapsible water bottles which you can buy a hydration hose adapter for. They are pretty easy to clean and lightweight! I am sure many other options, but figured I would share!
Always amazing. I really love your videos!
Would you please consider a part two video for how you pack/accommodate Nala's gear?
I'll see what I can do! Stay tuned for more dog content soon 👀 - Miranda
I use that nemo pump sack on my thermarest and it works really well! The air nozzle fits the one on my pad perfectly. It barely takes up any space and weighs very little.
That's so cool! I love that pump sack - great to know it works on Thermarest too! - Miranda
@@rei I realized recently that I should specify which Thermarest sleeping pad I was using that pump sack on. It was the older style with the smaller valve. I just bought a newer Thermarest pad with the wing-lock valve and it’s much bigger and doesn’t fit that pump sack. I am planning to make an adapter for it though. I really like that pump sack. I also don’t like getting condensation inside my sleeping pad.
@@aurtisanminer2827 Gotcha! So you've got a Therm-a-rest with the classic valve, versus the newer, WingLock one. We appreciate the clarification and wish you the best with your mod.
@@rei no problem! I do like that wing lock design. It flows really well and has a oneway check valve for inflating.
I bought a meetpeak sleeping pad off Amazon, gots the 3.9 inch thickness and built in pillow, it hasn't failed me yet😁😁😁😁😁.
And it's priced at only 40 bucks, opposed to 100+ something dollars like Nemo, that popped an air leak last winter in Shawnee state forest, whilst trapped in my tent for over a day in freezing rain😒
Miranda you are the best!
*Brings up how the world wants to know about her whittling knife. Doesn't talk about whittling knife.* lol great video. I love how accessible you make everything.
can i just say that miranda is so great. i mean she is so inclusive in the way when she was talking about the kula cloth that anyone who sits to go number one instead of saying females. like that is so great ❤️❤️
Make sure to use a bag liner such as a trash compactor bag, especially for the down items and spare clothes. No pack is 100% waterproof.
Try a CNOC water bag for the Befree or Sawyer squeeze. It has a slide open top so it’s easier to fill from shallow water sources, and you can hang them from a tree and use your filter as a gravity filter when you get to camp. I’ve seen more and more of them on the PCT/JMT lately.
Thanks for the video. Are you wearing a Garmin Instinct? Could you do a video on best fitness watches for backpacking? GPS, mapping, battery for multi-day etc would be interesting.
Another GREAT video! Thank you! Miranda, you are delightful!
Thank you for watching!! - Miranda
Smartwater bottles. There's a reason almost every thru hiker uses them. Lightweight, reliable and 1l capacity. I carry two, one in each pocket of the flash 45 along with a .6L or 1L katadyn. Started with a reservoir ( couldn't gauge intake, takes up valuable backpack space & things shift around after depleting), moved to nalgenes (unnecessarily heavy and bulky) and have settled on smart water bottles.
They're also great if you want to do something like decant wine for drinking at camp in the evening! I know people like those little boxed wines, but this way you get to pick the wine you and can bring it in what is a surprisingly rugged plastic bottle.
You can’t buy Smartwater bottles at REI, that’s why she uses a Nalgene bottle. This is a commercial for REI after all
Miranda You Are So Funny I Love Your Videos And Thank You So Much For Your Knowledge On Packing What First to the Last Back Pack And How To Plan Your First Trip I Realy Got Alot Of Info On That. THANK YOU...And Your Friend Pam She Is So Nice The Two Of You Are Funny And And A Great Friendship I Realy Love It❤
Hey Miranda, check out a reservoir (I have a 3L hydrapack) combined with an MSR Inline filter, I've been really enjoying that setup this year, and the hydrapack top opens so wide you can flip it all the way inside out for cleaning etc.
I love the sunglasses demonstration!! Love how you keep it “real”!!
I spent 24 years in the Army and during that span, one of the many transitions I witnessed was from canteens to hydration systems. They definitely make it easy and convenient to stay hydrated; your water consumption will invariably increase if you have that hose hang there all the time. However my verdict is that they are more trouble than they are worth; punctures, dripping bite valves, difficult to keep clean and sanitized, and expensive$. Simple water bottle for me thank you.
See what I do is have a 1+liter Fiji water bottle with the sports cap on it, I used a knife and widened the hole so that way my water bladders hose fits in and now I can still use the hose but instead the containers on the side of the pack not inside
Easy to keep sanitized if you store in the freezer ;)
Nice loadout video!
I was totally caught off guard there at the end. The buttcheek in a ditch thing lmbo!!!
Anyway, yeah nice gear loadout and like you said to each their own.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! 🏞🎒
Thank you Miranda!! As a person new to this stuff, your info is very very helpful 😊
Fav tip: wear a camelbak at a party to stay hydrated. Genius right there
Was that a Sound of Music reference at the beginning? A good place to start..lol..
see you all in a "wild"-- classic Miranda!
Great items and entertaining as always.
Love love love your videos Miranda!
I really wanted the Flash 55 pack, amazing features. Unfortunately REI doesn’t offer a larger option for those of us with long torsos...
Maybe...someday...
Doesn't the Flash come in a Tall size option?
I watched your episode where you asked what “luxuries” you should bring. I would bring only one: Miranda!
Hey Miranda, if you're gonna pack your sleeping bag loose why not the tent as well? I prefer using a bag liner to put the stuff I need dry inside. That way I can pack my tent loose inside the pack but between the liner and the pack wall. This also keeps a leaky hydration bladder from getting your dry goods wet. I don't use a pack cover anymore since I went to a liner (trash compactor bag) inside. Great video as always. Happy Trails!
Hey! I've had a lot of people suggest I try a trash compactor bag over the years, and I've just never made the switch! I store my tent in the bag so it doesn't get everything dirty, but maybe it's time I try your technique. Thanks for the tip! - Miranda
5:00 Aw, I wanted to hear more about the whittling stuff!
Check out this short I made about my whittling stuff! th-cam.com/video/VXwIgSoAiiQ/w-d-xo.html

as someone who has only thru-hiked, it is very interesting to me what gear setup a regular modern day backpacker has lol.
I think it would be really fun to see a video where you go on a trip with an ultralight backpacker and compare your packs and gear.
I know you didn't mention it but do you ever carry a compass-n-map, like on some of your lengthier trips?
I wondered since you put all the camping gear at the bottom, does that mean that all the other stuff has to be pulled out before you can set up your tent? If a quick storm comes wouldn't all your other stuff get wet before you could get to your tent to get set up? Is this why they now have separate compartments so you can get your shelter stuff out without disturbing the rest of the pack? Love your videos .
As a whitewater rafting guide, Astrals for the win!!! Class IV whitewater and my Loyaks have never come off of my feet (fingers crossed)
Informative, entertaining and exceptional videos as always. Thank you Miranda and REI.
That was great. I was waiting for a third clip of the head shake with the sunglasses at the end. Haha!
If you put some lemon or lime juice in with your water for the water reservoir, it will combat the plastic taste and should taste more like normal water. That's what I do, but taste is all subjective 🤷♂️
+1 - also, rose water, Antésite, or a splash of cheap rum or whatever also works effectively. :-)
Great vid! Thanks Miranda!
Ive always packed my bag in order of things I might need, so a sleeping bag and clothes etc, always ended at the bottom followed but food that's not lunch for the day, cooking stuff. then rain jacket lunch, map ect towards the top, so by accident I've been packing correctly hahahaha
I do like backpacking and outdoor gear, but I watch this because I love Mirandas no fuss attitude! 👍😄
What about swapping the pillow for the sleeping bag stuff sack? You can put clothes in the latter and lay your head on it.
This is great advice and show off. Im a hammock camper but a lot of the principles. Not as big of a fan of the Biolite 330 as i thought i would be when i bought it. Still good though
Hi Miranda was wondering what is the hoodie/ jacket your wearing in this video. Love you!
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... MY problem is one of carrying SERIOUS photographic gear while thru-hiking/camping. If you're a wild-life & landscape photographer this adds a new level of bulk and weight that most backpackers have NO clue. If I want to shoot with an APS size sensor and LONG zoom lens and TRIPOD... It seriously shortens my distances and lengthens my rest times. And if I feel the need to stop and photograph an elk bellowing during the rut... It can be a nightmare. 😫 Oh... and I'm 63 so I pack a chair!!! 2Lbs right there!
Dude I LOVE your vibe
"Buttcheek in A Ditch" the new MiTW album coming to a record store near you in 2022. A good breakdown of the pack, but seriously: beef up the first aid stuff. :)
As another hiker once wisely stated, "Only carry what you know how to use."
For me that would be Band-Aids, alcohol wipes (Honorable mention: Neosporin or iodine), Mole Skin, Needle, Tweezers (found in the pocket knife), Aspirin, and Pepto. Everything else can wait until I get back into town after camping.
If you consider sunscreen "first aid" then that too.
Love your videos Miranda : ) You are freaking awesome
You're the only person I've ever come across that makes a poop kit sound entertaining..... Lol
Miranda has a great ability to make everything sound entertaining.
Yes!! More Miranda! 😃🥰
Loved that, so useful !!
As a trans man who's just getting into backpack I really appreciate you referring to the pee cloth as "for anyone who squats to pee". To cis people it might seem small, but it makes me feel seen. Thank you. 🖤🖤
😃 nice set up . 🌲 ⛺️ it’s just not a complete Miranda in the wild video without a burp 🤣😂
Most definitely. Miranda is my burp-coach. I used to have to burp in lonely silence, fearing that I was less of a person, but now, with her help, I burp proudly and with a smile that is contagious. Wait, that didn't come out right. :(
Where is the place your video taking place? It looks a very nice and beautiful with the little small river.
The head banging was great
Always have to watch the bits at the end of your videos...absolutely loved buttcheek in a ditch. Another great video gosh darn!
Thank you for this. What underwear do you wear? I know it’s personal but also important. A friend of mine swears by merino undies. Any thoughts? And what hiking socks do you prefer, especially in the summer. Do you sleep in your clothes? I noticed you didn’t have sacred clothes to change into for sleeping. Just curious. Thanks again for all tour help
Great gear & packing system. Trying to scrape up the 1k I need to buy the pieces I like 🙏 for sharing
This is maybe a dumb question but…do you need to use filtered/treated water for the bidet?
I too would love to know!
Yes, and unless you have IBS, what a dumb system. Just use baby wipes and ziplock bags to carry them out.
I love my travel bidet soooo much.
I decided to google it and some folks at reddit have thoughts: www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/e34mir/should_i_be_filtering_water_for_my_bidet/
Ever curious: Michelle I use both a bidet and TP. 1st TP to remove bulk; 2nd bidet;
If I survive my adventures is thanks to you Miranda :)
What sacks do you use to create your different "kits"?
One thing I always do is specially with the unpredictable weather the season I use a trash compactor bag as a liner
