Wow I owe You. Great video. Not too many home mechanics have a 32 mm impact socket, ran to harbor freight found one for 5 bucks. Had the job done on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks again for the encouragement. No more leak...
Thank you so much for the help. My front is leaking on my 4x4. But my Haynes manual says that this procedure applies for front and rear. So thank you so much. Life saver brother
Went to weld a magnaflow under my son's 2000 rcsb and found it had been slinging diff fluid on the gas tank and a little on the exhaust. He and I are gonna tackle it this evening. Never done one either, so thanks for the video, Travis!
Great Video… Been putting this project off for my brothers truck for about 6 months, your video made it look so simple I’m gonna get it done this evening or first thing tomorrow morning.
Any idea if the 32mm is standard for most gm diff pinion bolts? I'm about to replace the leaking seal on my 2016 Canyon rwd with the G80 locking diff. Very simple and clear vid! Thanks!!
I put a junkyard axle gt8 g80 optioned and it needs one of these seals badly it leaked about 8 ounces of diff fluid in just a couple months time and that's cause I don't even drive it often I was debating whether or not to take it to my mechanic but, this seems like an easy enough job for me just need to rent a puller though thanks for the vid brother!!
Hello, great vid btw. Do you know if you can replace the outer pinion bearing the one right behind the seal while you have the seal out or does it have to be done from the inside. Thanks for your time.
Good video. I'm glancing at this because I haven't done one in ~30 years and mine is leaking (former GM Master Tech) and I'm just looking for a refresher on fastener sizes and such. Mine is leaking by the splines, as evident that the nut is shiny. The tip I have is to use Loctite teflon pipe thread sealer on the pinion splines before reassembly. It might eliminate a come-back.
@@TWAMotorsportsyou'll find one like it..... I'm looking forward to video of the transmission replacement in your dad's SSR...if I'm not mistaken I think they have the corvette motor in them sport trucks.. I remember when they first came out.. cool looking 🇺🇲👍
Very informative Mr T. I have to do this on the WS6, it went bad when I dropped the suspension. Pinion angle way off, addressing this issue with BMR products, adjustable torque arm, LCA relocation brackets, etc....
Love your content...I have a 02 silvarado stepside stock height on a set of 24s with 305/35s what is a good set of shocks to use I'm not going to drop truck...Any suggestions?
This might be a late comment ! But what size pinion seal is that I’m having really bad trouble fitting mine into my 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd and I picked up a 8.5 size which might be the wrong size ??
My 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 rear axle pinion is leaking oil, it looks a lot easier than I thought. Did you polish the yoke sealing surface for the replacement seal?
Know this is an older vid, but I’m working on my truck currently, and a weird rubber seal broke. It was located on the threads/gears, what is that rubber piece called? Or at least is it necessary to get a good seal?
I took my 2006 Silverado 1500 to a shop about 7 months ago and paid them to replace this seal. Now, I noticed a few days ago it started leaking again. I assumed they checked the bearing and the pinion yoke. It didn't leak right away, so maybe it is just a faulty seal or installation issue? It is under warranty yet and should be able to take it back, but what do you think about this?
I got a 92 Chevy 4.3 v6 well it belonged to my pops and he messed up the seal and replaced it but didn't do it correctly, he was dying and wasntv in his right state of mind well I got the driveshaft off the truck and didn't know anything about aligning it up but I'm trying to figure out if I should drain the oil completely and replace it or just fill it up? Also I'm not sure how much torque I put on that nut that holds the yolk onto place? The parts I have right now are new including the nut.
Same here i don't know anything about these trucks and nobody will help me, I've got to different books on these trucks and both or different from each other hahaha which makes zero sense? And I'm trying to figure out what is a ring Gear? I TH-cam and Google it and still don't understand what it is or what it looks like? I don't know shit about this stuff and didn't have a dad growing up to show me anything. I don't know what to do?

@@TWAMotorsports No it wasn't too bad. I ended up taking the rear diff cover off, and noticed one of the spider gears had a couple chipped teeth. I still need to go back and fix that though. I bought the truck about 15 years ago with 65k miles on it and now it has just shy of 240k. Still stock 4.3. How can I know the original position of the rear end joke?
Thanks for your response, I checked my self and turns out that the u joint was l little loose, I loosed the two bolts and hit the u joint cap that looked flat and it when down/in about 1/8. No more vibrations 😊
I couldn't get the seal flush on my 90s Chevy I just went ahead and put on the yolk and didn't know anything about lighning or marking anything up I just put 120ft lbs into that bolt a couple people told me to put only like 10-30 in lbs which there's NO WAY it's in lbs? I most I could put was 120ft lbs so hopefully I'm good? I'm not a mechanic and have zero help with no friends.
I’m not understanding, the manual asks you to document the breaking torque (I work in an Industry that is torque dependent). Breaking torque is a qualitative value as it’s not a constant. I have a decade of research proving breaking torque is qualitative. This is my question, what is the torque speck for this bolt? I understand counting the threads. Wtf is the center bolt torque value?

Hard to trust shops doing the right things these days
Good job, everything done to the book except should have coated splines with rtv (ultra gray) probably where the leak was. Other than that good work.
Thank you
Will be doing mine soon!
Several on the road need it.
Did you have to install a wear sleeve on the yoke? Good DIY video.
Not that I saw.
If I put a new yoke how would you go about that? Just put the new yoke as close as possible to the original position?
Not sure I would use this same method but guess you could try
Did you force that nut back to the original position? I did my truck the mark is exactly the same as your.
Counted turns.
