  • Session 77 - We tested the Carbon High Modulus Mast with 72cm vs. the Alu Mast with 75cm and different Fluid H stabs for the Sirus XXL, but were a bit challenged with too many waves.
Join me on the way to master the art of pumpfoiling. Maybe you are already a pro, started like me also as a bloody beginner or are playing with the idea to learn it, welcome to on board. Let us journey this together.

That comparison is very interesting and I would love to hear more comments when you repeat in calmer conditions. I mostly wingfoil and have always been a proponent of alu masts. I saw carbon masts as an unnecessary and expensive luxury. A while ago I read an article in the surf magazine (German windsurfing magazine) where they compared alu and carbon masts and found that there are only marginal differences and in some ways alu masts can even be stiffer (however in windsurf foiling you typically use small foils). Currently I use only a 112cm Fluid H XL foil. I just ordered an Ypra-LS (90cm). With a smaller foil it should matter less how stiff your mast is. However a Gong adviser told me that with the fast Ypra-LS foil an Alu mast would be "too thick" and it would ventilate at high speeds. So a carbon mast is "needed".
The alu mast is not thicker than 19mm I think. I just ordered a Gong HM 86cm mast which is 20mm thick at the top and 17mm at the bottom. So I don't expect a big difference. I ordered it because I want to be prepared to get a big Sirus wing next year (XL or XXL) for wingfoiling in very light wind. Gong says for those foils you really need the "thick" HM masts (72, 79 or 86). In this video you sound like the difference is not very big, even with Sirus XXL. So I am really not sure about how much of this is marketing and if I just wasted a lot of money on a mast with little benefit.

It was really difficult to tell in those conditions. If the weather might be calmer this week, I will try again. I don’t think it’s just marketing. The Alu fuselage of a friend broke or got bended with the Sirus XXL. It seems that the forces are getting quite high, otherwise gong would have never made the high modulus mast so thick.

From gong out they say you need the newer stronger reenforced carbon mast , not even ok with the HM85 but need the HM85 with all front wings above 120cm wingspan.

dont use the XXL Sirus with the alu stab! I broke 3 of them - the pro Version. The Sirus did not float

You broke three Alu Pro Fuselages? I am sorry to hear that. Could you recover the Sirus? I only knew of a person who broke the normal Alu fuselage. That means I need to buy the titanium fuselage? Did you break the fuselage with sup foiling or with pump foiling?

@@FoilingPastor yes 3 of them. 2 bent 1 broke of. luckely always in shallow water. no ground contact. pumpfoil long distance in small waves.

@@olek73 do you think less weight makes a difference? I only weigh 65kg. I don`t want to spend money for another fuselage...
