Nice build. I have been using magnet bars for easy collection of drill bits, etc. for sometime now. I didn't organize in a box, just clamped the magnetic bars to my workbench metal sections. I like your box idea, can easily hang by putting a french cleat on the side of one of a shop cabinet - or work benches. Still building out my shop so will see how to incorporate.
Thanks @Rob Sandstrom! Yes, I've seen the magnetic strips used in all sorts of ways but I thought I would just put in shelves and keep them all in one place. The french cleat is a great idea for hanging it. You never really stop building your shop 😉
@The Ropes of Renovation - Personally, I love the magnetic strips. It's so quick in easy to stow away your bits. I haven't misplaced a drill or router bit since I built it.🙂
Awesome build Eric, Thank you for sharing. it is greatly appreciated. I was also going to comment on the screws sticking through the wooden shelf base, but as you have already covered the subject with other concerns from your fans, All I would like to add is, I would have done that part differently myself. I would use nuts and bolts rather than screws, After drilling the holes for the magnetic strips, I would have flipped the boards and drilled in a recess for the nut to sit in. It's nither a better or worse way of doing it, just a different way, and take's nothing away from your great build. All the best to you Eric, from North London U.K. 👍😎
Those magnet strips are available at Harbor Freight for just a few bucks each. I even got a couple for free with Christmas coupons last month! I use them all over my shop, probably have a dozen of them at this time in various places. Their use is only limited by your imagination!
I liked the project and I was intrigued by the variable square that appears in the video, do you have any reference to buy it? Thank you for your time and your attention.
Thanks @Antolin Agar Soto That is called a Protractor & Saw Guide. This is the one I have: www.canac.ca/en/product/tools/hand-tools/squares-measuring-tools/protractor-saw-guide_40359.aspx
I like the versatility of the magnet. It would be great for router bits and drill bits that will only be used on wood (brad, fostner). I don't like the idea of magnetizing any drill bits that I will use on metal as the shavings will be a pain to clear. Nice project.
@Adrian Stanciu Thanks! I haven't had any issues with the few metal cutting drill bits that have been stored on these magnets. I don't think their strong enough to magnetize the steel to that extent.
@Eric Sorenson Do you recommend the Ridgid table saw you have for someone that is unhappy with the new Hitachi Rc10J ? I bought the craptachi bout a year ago and used it maybe 20-30 min a day at the most and the insert broke, the fence won't stay 90 to the table and it also won't stay parrallel LOL. I saw another TH-camr bought one and used it commercially for maybe a week before it broke ( fence lock broke)
@Dru 86 I've had my Ridgid jobsite table saw for about 8 years now and it's still going strong - they do have a good warranty but.... I think I will have to go with the Dewalt compact table saw for best value. I would build a special mobile in-feed / out feed for it or attach it to my bench Ron Paulk style. Also check out Porter Cable, I've always had good luck with their tools. A Powermatic 220V would be my preferred saw, if you can afford it.
Awesome build Eric! Those magnets are a great idea. Looking forward to see what you have in store for us in 2019! Happy Holidays to you & your family........................
Great build Eric very handy to have, my Router bits are all together in a box on a shelf, so this is a great idea. Well Done. Merry Christmas to You and Your Family, hope you all have a great 2019. Barry (ENG)
@Dimitrios Lykissas Yes, you can cut dovetails all the way through but I've only done that with 1/2" material on this jig. You are limited by the dovetail bit depth more than the jig itself.
Really cool idea - and I JUST realized the GluBot cap goes on the bottle top when in use - duh !Why did you not dado the back of the shelf and make the magnetic strips hidden ? Would they not be strong enough to hold through, say, 1/4" of wood ?
Thanks @Temple Thomas! I like the notion of doing that, It would have looked cooler but then the bits may not stay put so well. It does weaken the magnetic force somewhat.
I know about the GluBot cap storage, but almost always forget to put it there until after I've dragged it through some glue. :D As for hiding the magnets in the wood, the inverse square law will bit you in the ass on that one. You could mitigate that by using very powerful rare earth magnets, but it will cost you several times what those cheap magnetic bars do. Something like this would work, and you can make it any length and strength you want. www.kjmagnetics.com/blog.asp?p=magnetic-knife-holder
Nice project Eric. I know you said you made the rear panel removable, but do you intend to hang it on a wall or just leave it on the counter? Merry Christmas to you and your family.
You don't always need to use clamps for dovetail glue-ups: www.rockler.com/secure-drawer-box-dovetail-joint-pin-nails-clamps
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks.

I think I like that better than the ones with holes too! Very nice.

Nicely done Eric!

@Trev Haydon Thanks! Because of the angle, I never encounter the sharp end of the screws but small bolts would be a fine alternative. Cheers 🍺🙂
Nice choice of background music, really. I was digging that while watching ..
Glad you liked it!
Very good realisation, maybe need some plexiglass for a better vue of the wick

Would you please share the source for the protractor?

@@EricSorensenCanada thx!
Great idea, it would work in my tiny shop. Thank you and have a great 2019.
Thanks @Mark Harris! Cheers and Happy 2019 🙂
Great job! Love this rack!!! Merry Christmas!!!🎄
Thanks @Gabriele Seitz! Merry Christmas & Cheers 🎄
Awesome build Eric! Those magnets are a great idea. Looking forward to see what you have in store for us in 2019!
Happy Holidays to you & your family........................
Thanks Steve! Happy Holidays to You and Yours as well! Cheers 🙂
Great job! Merry Christmas
@Tom F Thanks!v Merry Christmas to you and yours as well 🎄
a nice build video Eric, thanks for posting from Garry in the UK, Merry Xmas
Thanks @garry! Cheers and Merry Xmas to you as well 🙂
Good idea with the plastic tubes, I use them for small dia drill bits. Those are so easily lost.
Thanks @Bret Lambky! They are excellent for keeping the tiny drill bits accounted for.
Great project Eric - can't seem to find the same magnets here in the UK. Great video- Happy Christmas.
Thanks @John Bredemere! Happy Xmas! You can find almost the same magnets on Amazon for the UK here: amzn.to/2GEyVRz
Me encanta!!

Thanks Barry! So far this method of storing seems to be working out well for me. Merry Xmas to you and yours as well! Happy 2019 and cheers 🙂
Wonderfull Work👍
Thanks @NobbyWood! Happy Holidays & Cheers! 🙂
Does this jig cut "full" dovetails?
@Dimitrios Lykissas Yes, you can cut dovetails all the way through but I've only done that with 1/2" material on this jig. You are limited by the dovetail bit depth more than the jig itself.

Where do you get the wood burning logo maker?
@Mike Petzold It was a custom order through: brandingirons.com/
Good idea
I'm planning a revamp of my tool storage so this great food for thought, Merry Christmas to you and yours!
@Derek Smalls Thanks! Merry Xmas and don't forget to turn it up to 11 🙂
Nice project Eric. I know you said you made the rear panel removable, but do you intend to hang it on a wall or just leave it on the counter? Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks @Tom P! I will leave it free standing on the counter for now but I can drill holes into the plywood back if I want to mount it on the wall.
Nice
