Huge fun with just 989cc! The Daihatsu Handivan L700

  • This was a brilliant day out. Tackling the twisty Mount Wellington approach road in Hobart, Tasmania, in a fizzy little three-cylinder Daihatsu - with a few performance tweaks. No turbo, just a surprising amount of grunt from a three-branch exhaust manifold, improved intake and gas-flowed head.
    The Daihatsu Handivan is a very simple conversion of an L700 Mira or Cuore. They just threw the rear seat away and added no frills whatsoever.

    I love everything about this car, particularly the base-model interior with plain plastic panels, and the lack of power steering. Driving cars like this makes you feel more connected to the car and to the act of driving, they're so much fun.

    I have driven all the Cuores, even the 2 cylinder one. The model that comes after this one in the video, gives the most fun. Don't forget to install a small momo steering wheel when buying it. No further modifications needed.

      The later new L701 Cuore I had was the best version, before they spoiled it with the boxy 'Charade' of 2003. I kept my standard airbagged steering wheel, but did need to replace the factory B250 tyres with some much better Falkens on slightly wider 13" alloys. Almost as much fun as my previous 1990 Panda was - and with a more advanced engine

    I bought a poverty-spec Perodua Kelisa new back in 2007. It had the luxury of power steering and a rev counter despite being £4600. I went with the attitude that if it's not rubbish then I would buy one. It was a fantastic car with everything in just the right place for hooning around lanes. My current beast is a Renault Twingo with a 900cc turbo in the back. That puts a smile on my face for the same reasons.

      @@itsmephil2255 the car has to be light and nimble as well though. No good having a small engined car that barely gets out of its own way. Its all about power to weight. I have fond memories of my uncles MK1 suzuki swift gti rapid little thing

    That was as much fun to watch as anything I've seen. I was nodding agreement all the way through. The soul of the original mini, in a wonderful motor.

    My first car was a Peroduca Kelisa, so basically the 5dr version of this, and it's still the most fun car I've ever driven and best handling. It wasn't fast but the joy was that it didn't need to be, going down country lanes at 50-60mph it held the road so well, and steering was so precise. It had power steering, but it still felt so connected with great feedback. I so want another! There were a few other differences, like the Kelisa had a rev counter, and my one, the GXi, had electric windows, but the mirrors didnt even have internal adjustments. James May tested one as one of the first cars he tested on new TG and said it was the closest thing he had driven to the original Mini, clearly he is far more sensible than the other two.

    • @germaineliew2012
      @germaineliew2012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hammond did review the Kelisa when he was with Men and Motors and he seems to be alright with it (But this is probably before the new format TG.)
      But yeah, Clarkson just seems to hate on anything that isn't a sports car or hot hatch.

    • @davebicker8618
      @davebicker8618 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a Kelisa in 2012 and gave it away. I got the chance to have it back a couple of years ago.
      It really is a gem of a car, I agree with everything you've said. Third gear through the Cotswold hills one evening was an entire and utter joy. It was pleasure on a stick.
      Get one.
      Get one now!

    I had a Handyman in Australia as a work commuter. It had a small cargo bar just behind the front seats to stop the shopping from joining you in the front. As you say very good around town and highlighted my eternal frustration of drivers who go over the speed limit in a straight line but as soon as a bend or corner arises they drive at granny pace or drive like they are in a Semi Trailer to get round the corner with me up their A***.

    I remember pouring over a Perodua Kalista in a garage whilst my car was being MOT'ed and being utterly blown away by the exquisite simplicity of the car. I often think that it may be a better proof of genuine engineering talent to design the essence of a car like this than to bang out another luxury euro box. Yet more proof, perhaps, that less is often more (except the glorious kiwi Cadillac of course that I am still day dreaming of!😉)

    Small is beautiful. Yesterday in my little Alto on my way to Tesco a little Mini Morris was coming the other way, utterly bombing down the lane - and as I watched it in my rear mirror disappear it had passed next to an SUV, and how incredibly small it looked like. We definitely need more fun & small cars, they're a hoot. Even the lowly Alto is marvellously fun on the roads.

I like small, light cars with character and this has it in spades - the throttle response sounds spot-on, obviously all that work on the motor has paid off. Charade GTi next, perhaps?

    I have driven several Daihatsu kei vehicles, one was a little 1983 Hijet van with an 850cc 3 cylinder engine. That thing could haul an amazing amount of cargo for such a tiny engine. The other was my wife's 2001 Terios which had an amazing full time 4 wheel drive capability for such a small 1.3L crossover vehicle, as it had 3 differentials, which could be locked with the flick of a switch for going offroad. Daihatsu really made some great cars back in the day. These days, I don't think you can buy new Daihatsus any more, certainly not in Australia where I am.

    Small car, little engine revving, chucking it about was one of the reasons James Hunt liked bombing around in his Austin A40
