I'd have to say coming back to this scene has made me realize so much more than I first thought. When goose talks about his fear of leaving his family behind from how risky maverick flies, what goose says isn't understood by maverick when he makes an attempt to lighten the situation by joking about the fly by. And then with how goose smiles almost tells you that he know that man isn't fully grasping what he means. This scene adds so much more emotion to goose's death later on.
This is definitely one of the best scenes in the movie. Even as a kid, when I first saw it I was immediately hooked. To me personally that's the sign/markings of a great scene. Regardless of one's age that the emotion, sincerity & overall message of the scene is delivered and more importantly understood.
If everyone had a friend like Goose, the world would be a better place.

You're spot on! I think Maverick doesn't grasp what Goose was saying here, until Goose dies. Then it all hits Maverick at once. Heartbreaking.
