CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Maverick (Tom Cruise) boasts about his run-in with a MiG, leaving the class and its instructor (Kelly McGillis) skeptical.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Made my day
I love how Goose is so happy when Maverick correct himself by saying "we" instead of "I".
Then says “thank you” on the next “we”
makes me laugh every time.
Goose stole the show.
Yeah, it’s so heart warming!
I know his little smile is just he is so comforting
I know it’s cheesy but I saw this movie in theater at age 18 in 1986 and it changed my life. I wanted desperately to become a pilot after seeing this movie. Back then I probably thought I was going to have a fast car and get all the girls. I never expected the years of hard work and studying it would take to become a military aviator and pretty much the only girls that chase you are shallow, looking for status. I spent 31 years in the U.S. Army, the last 21 of those as a test pilot. I’ve never worked and studied so hard in all my life. I retired in 2018. Every time I see a Top Gun clip I smile and think about that young kid that just wanted to be someone. I’ll be 54 this January and really enjoying retirement. I’ve not flown once since leaving the Army and don’t think I ever will again. I choose not to push the odds any longer. Thank you for reading.
Wow. That was some read! It must have made you nostalgic and reminded you of those days. Also, any funny incidents or interesting stories you have for us?
Thank you so much for sharing and for your service.
@Verticle26 you should see top gun 2
Did you fly fighter jets?
Wow! Thank you for your service! I wonder how many others will be inspired by Maverick and make the decision to enlist.
I love this scene. Goose saying “you know the finger” gets me everytime
Yes I still laugh at this 36 years later 🤣
Kid named finger:
*coughs* Bullshit
"Yes, I know the finger, Goose..."
Yes I know the finger goose
Such a badass scene, even if it's made of pure dialogue. His confidence, her disbelief, the doubts from the others, and the fact that we know for a fact it's all true. It's all pure gold!
Why does she suddenly believe him at the end of the scene? In fact , she acts like she was there
@@mattr8251 It's tough to say really. It could just be the confidence. It could also be that it would be pretty hard for 2 people to improvise a story like that so flawlessly without any prep time. She just sees them talking, asks, and they have the story ready. Heck, it could even just be that she is good at reading people and can tell that he's not lying.
@@mattr8251 Because she'd heard of it before!.
@@LucianDevine she was briefed on it happening beforehand. That’s why she said “you’re the one?” Because she already heard about the story.
@@yayz9442 Then why was she surprised when she heard about the inverted dive part? Do you honestly think that Maverick would have left that part out of the official report?

The part where Iceman coughs "bullshit" was pure ad-lib. It was never scripted.
+Alex Stockl he might have done it in a earlier take ad-lib and they liked it so it stuck and got filmed on the next take.
Many of the most memorable "extras" (lines, actions, etc) in movies across the decades were actor ad-lib/improv. Another example, Dustin Hoffman and the famous "I'm walking here" scene, not only was the response from him improv, him almost getting hit was real. Or another military example being pretty much everything R. Lee Ermey said in Full Metal Jacket (though that was more of a "scripted improv" case, but still). Many times where actors do something off the cuff, and it fits the character and scene far better than the intended scripted words or actions, the director will use it as is (depending especially on whether or not it can be repeated intentionally, or at all, in another take where it gets officially added to the script without losing every nuance that made the improved action just work). And other cases they'll script in improved lines (sometimes, for example, an actor will do or say something "in character" while goofing around either in blooper worthy takes or off camera, that the director will like and put in the script.
But yeah, adding in little bits like that "bullshit cough" happens far more often than people realize, and whether an included unintentional action is small or big, they make up some of the most memorable scenes of movie history.
Val Kilmer was SUCH a babe
Part of the creative process you expect from a good actor, and allowed by a good director where it makes sense. Marlon Brando would often add things like that in.. It can bring what would be an otherwise bland script to life.
+aliceislooking throughtheglass - And not he is fat and ugly
Do you even realize that Val Kilmer did the “bs” cough unscripted and the entire world started doing that for the next 40 years. Probably the most quoted movie ever.
I don't think it's necessarily a top gun quote everytime someone does that...
Dude Val Kilmer did not invent that wtf
“bs” cough
Ah yes, and so we have yet another to add to the list of unscripted greats that camera man "B" and sound guy "C" was miraculously able to capture in enough quality to make it thru the final edit for our viewing pleasure.
Actually animal house did it first but love it here too

Tom cruise literally didn’t age while the teacher looks like she’s 90 now lol
Men age like wine, women age like cheese.........
Sad but true
Kelly had a nervous breakdown and her life went downhill. She became a drug addict and alcoholic. It's really a shame what happened to her. The stardom became to much.
But if you look at actresses like Peggy Lipton, who was 70 years old when she played in Twin Peaks 2017, she looks like a babe. And think about this one, Jennifer Lopez is 50 years old and looks like a goddess.

Not many people know this but the US Navy actually uses Top Gun as a instructional training film. Not for the dogfight scenes but to instruct new aviators on "proper ray ban application as it applies to civilian and tactical use". As a matter of fact it was also used up until recently as a way to instruct new aviators on the proper way to race a f-14 on a motorcycle. Unfortunately with the discontinued use of the f-14 this method is no longer in use. Lol. On a very serious note I know this is just a cheesy 80s movie but it will always have a special place in my heart and in most of the hearts of those watching this clip. Most importantly I want all of you to know that its ok to still cry when goose dies! Rip goose. (Ima set up a go fund me for his widow Meg Ryan for those who are interested)
Tom Cruise's smile is INFECTIOUS
I LITERALLY just found out it was an 80's movie. I been watching this movie since I was like 9 years old thinking it was like late 90's/early 2k's movie which made it easy to believe why the movie was so well made (effects/audio/quality). Like honestly, I feel ignorant but also mindblown at how amazing this movie is for it's time. Also it feels like Tom Cruise hasn't aged.
I've always thought a lot of the "early" special effects were more effective than current CGI....our brains do a better job of filling in details The closer CGI gets to reality, the more our brain perceives its fakeness .
Wasn't ruined by p.c like modern movies!

“Because I was inverted.”
Perhaps the most quotable movie in pop culture.
After she say “so you’re the one?” Her water breaks, so to speak.
wait like she giving birth?
What does she mean by that? She was doubting the story the entire time.. I always feel like I'm missing something when I watch this
@@mattr8251 It suggests that, contrary to the rest of the dialog, she *was* already aware of the incident, and just didn't know who did it. She might even, by presenting the incomplete intel, have been phishing for it. Come to think of it, this dramatically changes the meaning of large parts of the movie.
During the air combat scenes, when the co-pilot is yelling _"Jesus Christ, Maverick!"_ ......Maverick is so full of himself, he drops the comma so he hears "Jesus Christ Maverick". He really thinks he's the one, yes ma'am.
Pretty sure her water didn’t break. Da fuq?
i love how his character in this movie is so smug, it makes it so much better
"Bullshit" was totally ad-libbed by Val Kilmer as it wasn't in the script. The laughs were genuine too. Wolfman also snuck his cowboy hat into the scene. He hid it under his seat and put it on right when they started filming this shot. Tony Scott liked it and just rolled with it.
Although the second have better action scene i always find the OG have better drama and personal touch. And Goose was the best supporting character, you knew he really really loved flying around with Maverick.

That’s funny, because the actors are in the real jets!
