    5 years later still the best video about sewing your own dress form with duct tape. The tips to details are very helpful.

    This is the very, very best tutorial on DIY dress forms. Complete in every aspect. Touching upon padding, making a stand, covering it with fabric to make it pin-able, to drawing the design lines on the form (which none of the videos I have seen even touch).

    Right on time.
    I'm 51 (physically lots of doctors reports I don't want to discuss) and One of my unfinished dreams is to have made my own Victorian gown Yes and Wear it. Hat gloves boots and ALL I don't care if I'm pulling weeds in the yard to wear it!!! This is one needed step in sure. I was trying to figure out where to get one ... You are AWESOME !!!

    Thank you for this tutorial, you explain every thing so well. I made a dress form about 30 years ago. We used butchers tape which has glue on one side which activates only when it's moistened. It was cut while on the roll using a raiser blade. Then we wet each strip by wiping it over a wet sponge and placed it in the same way on the body as you described. While it dries it shrinks slightly, which when finnished ,gives you the exact replica and mesurement of your body and has a very smooth surface. My figure changed a lot during the years, but you encouraged me to make another one. I found a tutorial that uses that method: "DIY dress form tutorial Part 1", by Nashville Repertory Theater.

    This is an excellent, very complete tutorial, thank you ! I was familiar with the duct tape method, but I was anxious as to how to trace the center and waist lines correctly, and I found the previous one I made a bit too floppy, the 3 layers should help, it is the small details that changes a lot ^^ I'm very looking forward to try it :-)

    I made one of these and what you dont realize until you start using it is that you will gunk up your pins because when you pull them out of the form they are covered in sticky adhesive from the tape and it can transfer to your fabric. The duct tape adhesive covering your pins then makes it harder to push them in fabric. Who wants to clean all their pins after every use.

    • @Biancapanzram
      @Biancapanzram 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's why she shows you how to make a cover. It's not intended to stick your pins through the actual duct tape, you stick your pins through the cover only.

    • @madisonmontgomery03
      @madisonmontgomery03 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bianca Panzram the cover is helpful but you need to be able to just easily drive a pin all the way into the form sometimes if you're working with something heavy. Trying to be all delicate and catch the cover just right gets old real quick

    • @Biancapanzram
      @Biancapanzram 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@madisonmontgomery03 Duly noted. Well, for $24 you can get this thing which helps you make one that you can push pins through. • @Biancapanzram
      @Biancapanzram 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@madisonmontgomery03 I think it's a neat option to have. Considering how expensive a custom dress form is, it's pretty cool to be able to make one from a $24 pattern that's tailored to your own measurements/figure. I don't feel that I quite yet have the sewing skills to try to make this custom form but I plan to get the pattern and make one as soon as I feel I'm ready/ can sew well enough.

    Fabulous instructions! But my problem with the duct tape projects is that it's not actually your exact size, since there is at least 3 layers of duct tape, not to mention the additional layer of the shirt. That can add up to as much as 1/2" all around! I would think that this would significantly throw off the overall fit once it's off the mannequin. A better process would be to use the taped form as a mold, instead of stuffing it and using as is. Silicone would probably be best, especially for pinning. However, it may not be cost effective for everyone. Expansion foam might work, but you would have to be very careful not to overfill to the point of distorting the taped form. Leaving holes in strategic places to allow for overflow might alleviate this problem, I would think. those areas could then be shaved & sanded down once the foam has set. Well, there I go thinking out loud again.

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can, quite easily, imagine many people who would be very happy to a a dress form that is within less of an inch of their body measurements. The depth of the covering is likely to be less than 1/4" (3-4 layers of tape & t-shirt). Ease generally allowed, especially for woven goods, is much more than 1/4" - 1/2").
      I've worked with expanding foam in construction type projects. I would not recommend it for this project. First I don't know how strong the "mold" of duct tape would have to be to control the expansion of the foam. How do you propose to separate the mold from the foam? Wouldn't you have the person wear some type of non-stick body hugging garment that would be cut off. The foam has to be free of the mold in order to "be shaved & sanded". Plus the bare foam would have to then be recovered with something to protect it, as even light pressure could damage it.
      Appreciate that you are thinking outside of the box. That's the way most new ideas come about. Sometimes great ones. Other times .....
      My 2-cents for whatever copper clad pennies are worth these days.

Last, try your best to tap the inside of the cur line to strengthen the form from the inside! Heart breaking going through all that & its falling apart.

    I tried the duct tape form and it was awful. The shirt underneath and the layers of duct tape added almost a whole inch to my true size al around, and threw any pattern I used with it off so I still didn't get a good fit- particularly in places like the high bust where I couldn't alter. Then after a couple of months it began to stink, so I had to toss it out. Never again.
