  • We went to the woods and found out someone had broken into our pallet wood cabin. They smashed the window and broke some panels. They also trashed some of the bushcraft shelters nearby. We tidied up the damage and repaired what we could.

I’ve been burgled whilst away from my cabin here in Oregon, U.S., it’s not necessarily the material possessions that go missing that bother me but the feeling of violation. Sorry for your situation.

Man, this state is going downhill. Not saying that folk wouldn't have broken in 10, 15 years ago, but it's *less* likely. I'm lucky to not live in portland, but a pal of mine's truck was stolen four times and wrecked once there.

I had a 4 person home invasion robbery when I was home. I was mowing my yard when they stormed the front door. I locked myself in the Camper. The Sheriff said I would have been killed had they got to me. Be thankful they are gone. Don’t leave anything valuable is my advice.

This makes me enraged. My Dad taught me that if you come upon someone's shelter or camp and need to use it, show some respect by chopping some firewood, build a table, carve some wood fairies for their kids, make some repairs. I have even left notes thanking them for their effort and work to help others. You were much cooler than I would have been. Well done, lads. Yeah, I can call you lads cause I am much older than you. I know.. but the youth of the U.K. and even Europe are absolutely not brought up that way anymore.
And it happened soon.. I'd never thought that 'my kids ' (would be the 17 to 20 y. o. mark) would be like that but if I look around me.. they are as unhappy as can be!
If they are bored out of their minds of their games and abused console's they go outside to kick off their boredom.
Litteraly trashing stuff and it absolutely must be from somebody else.
When I was young and another parent stood at the door because I had done something with my friends, their parents came at my door and wanted to talk to my parents and believe me..
We didn't have t.v. or gaming stuff on our rooms!
If you had to stay in your room because I was grounded, the only thing that was entertaining was to watch outside your window! And the flipping neighbor asking me what I had done wrong this time..
And that was the most exciting thing that was!
And that was for days on end.
Nowadays a kid does something it should not do it gets a "don't do that, if I catch you doing it you will know it!" But the thing is... NOTHING happens!! Because it immidiatly is child abuse..
I can go on and on but I won't. Simply because it doesn't matter.
It is a shame and yeah, I even feel ashamed of them!
Trashing other man's work, time and yes: MONEY !!
Edit: what I meant to say what I had done with my friends was calling other kids some names and such stuff.. Never in my life I have trashed, demolished anything, I was raised with a spanking so now and again or when I had a raging temper my head was stuck under cold water. And of course time in your room to think.

I was young out in the bush and the river current overtook me (in other words I was caught in a storm) I did break into a cabin and wrote the owners a message of sorry but I had to. I was freezing cold from wet. I did chop wood for them. I am stile very grateful for the cabin owners for helping me stay alive.

It used to be a time if you were stranded in the woods, you would replace and leave a bit more when you left.
I remember using one once. I only used very little wood.
I don't have much energy to cut more.
I went home but I felt bad not been able to leave more cut wood.
I went to the store in the city before hitting back to that location.
This time, I took a huge bag of salt, flour, yeast, beans, and water bottles and hit back. Upon arrival I notice 2 people were there. They let me know they were the owners retiring there. I could see the veg garden.
So I have them the items. They say....... Why?
I told them about a time I went on my own and came upon the cabin. Andi did used their wood.
All that couple said was....... O& yes, I remember seen less wood by the stove and not been replaced.
But we notice a clean up was done including the windows.
They were very kind accepting my items. And I felt better.

serious shame they trashed things so needlessly. might just be the old backpacker in me, but if i'd stumbled across it, i might use the fire pit, & spend a night in one of the houses, I would want to leave it in better shape than I found it: at least tidy up and clear the leaves back from the fire pit, straighten things up, restock the woodpile, etc. Mindless destruction like that is just so pointless....
About the Khukri's notch. It's a characteristic of that type of blade. The mark is a long tradition and carries a great deal of meaning. From a practical standpoint, it's a "drip point" to keep any blood from running down the blade onto the handle and make it slippery. On the spiritual side, it's the mark of their deity, as a reminder. They swear to never use these blades against women or children, or to slaughter cows. (this is why the notch resembles the footprint of a cow)

When I was backpacking, I did occasionally stop in a cabin when the weather was bad. Always leave a note, more wood than when I found it and if it was locked, don't mess with it and pack out your trash, always. I was always grateful when I came across a cabin with the latch-string out, especially if it was raining. Too bad the hornets had already vacated the premise. It would have served the baduns right if they had roused a nest of angry stingers and had to bale out that broken window.

One minor nitpick, the "blood groove" was used to make the weapon longer and stiffer with less material, although nowadays is just milled in most productions, no relation with bleeding an enemy

  • @beowulfsrevenge4369
    @beowulfsrevenge4369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

The fuller on a blade isn't actually to channel blood out of a target. It's made into the blade to widen a piece or metal and lighten it with out changing the strength of the blade. So you can make a bigger stronger blade out of less material.
I believe the copper or brass that was soldered on the back of that knifes sheath was to add the belt loop. That type of knife doesn't normally have one, it's normally worn tucked into a belt or sash not worn attached to a belt.

Y'all have such a calm demeanor to all this, but what an infuriating situation-- the utter disrespect of people to both trespass on your land and then destroy that hard work and historical recreations (that part really hits a nerve with me) is really profound. Without getting easily profane and use some British colloquialism, whoever did all that are tossers.
I hope y'all can fix everything, and that some right proper "karma" comes back at the offenders.
Nice collection of blades there. FYI-- the Bayonets have a hollow-ground fuller, it's meant to lighten the blade yet not lose any strength, and in combat use prevents the blade from getting stuck in an enemy, "blood groove" is a misnomer.
The Kukri is Nepalese (that one is anyway with the ornate designs and additional identifiers, they are used all over the world in Agricultural and other applications), the notches near the base of the blade near the handle according to traditional belief is a Hindu/ Buddhist fertility symbol, so the notch represents forbidding of slaughtering sacred animals such as cow. The Gurkhas also kept promises with it that they will never use this weapon on women and children.
The small blade is Middle Eastern, something typical of a gift or used by Nomadic Tribes as a symbolic item or an emergency defensive daggar. I'm not entirely sure on the other blades, could be Indian or Indonesian or Middle Eastern in nature too, not familiar with those ones though.

A relative put up window covers that were hinged from the top of the windows and he would unhook the bottom from the ceiling, the wooden cover would drop down covering the screens, and he would turn wooden toggles to hold them in place. We went there for Thanksgiving bringing all the food with us and vandals had broken in and trashed the place. So I can relate. No broken windows though!
