  • Part 1. How to fix, or replace the water pump. Coolant leaking from the front of your engine? This might be why. This was a 2002 Sebring. This engine was made for many vehicles, and should be about the same job. The engine was also made for 1998-2004 Chrysler Concorde, 1998-2004 Dodge Intrepid, 2001-2006 Stratus, 2005-2008 Magnum, 2005-2010 Chrysler 300, 2006-2010 Charger, and 2008-2010 Avenger. Maybe more. 1999 2000 2003 2006 2007 2009 leak 99 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10

Thanks for the video! Good job! I mistakenly bought a car with one of these engines. 2002 Stratus. It had low miles, ran good, was in great shape (body, paint, interior, etc.) Now I have to do this job because I’m getting noise from the valve train. I’m pulling the engine, doing a top end rebuild, water pump, replacing rocker arms and HLAs as needed. Then I’m trading this thing in on ANYTHING that has a decent motor! I didn’t do any research on this engine and feel like I got suckered (by myself). Lesson learned. Caveat emptor!

I'm working on yet another one of these mechanical "marvels". Lol
Mind you there was no indication of a problem other than the coolant seemed to have been disappearing for a few months prior to the failure. There was a short time where it left a small puddle on the ground when parked overnight but that cleared itself up somehow & kept going for months with just a small amount of coolant disappearing. If it would have been taken to a competent mechanic like this guy in the video then the pressure test would surely have pinpointed the problem & saved a great deal of extra labor & cost. Yet, here we are.
First you have the water pump as an internal part of the engine. Water and oil just awaiting catastrophic failure, it's not IF but WHEN. In the case of the engine I'm working on the failure of the water pump bearing quickly turned catastrophic when the water pump's chain sprocket became so sloppy that it busted the timing chain resulting in a few teeth broken off the sprocket & pieces of metal all over in the pan, a broken chain guide & who knows what else I'll find when I get it completely apart. Naturally being an interference engine there's going to be some bent valves so the heads will have to come off.
At 3:30 One of the stupidest things I've seen when doing work on an engine, Chrysler's safety clip for the safety clip!! What a P.I.T.A. !!! Doesn't say much for their original safety latch on their connectors does it??
"oh it doesn't latch very well?? Let us just put another safety latch on the safety latch so it won't come unplugged!!"
Sure that costs far more than just designing the latch right the first time so it doesn't need another latch to keep the first latch connected!!
Like you say in the video, "stupid stupid stupid!"
It's downright ridiculous! It's like a third grader designed the damn connectors, although I'm sure most third graders could do better so that's giving the Chrysler engineers a lot of credit. I mean cheese & rice! It's not like it's the space shuttle or anything of that nature! If they were so damn worried about the connectors coming undone they should've just designed them right to begin with!!
Yet another prime example of Chrysler's equal opportunity employment & hiring the handicapped and/or impaired.
Thanks for reading my rants & raves! Have a good one.

Thanks for the video. Just changed the water outlet housing and then the thermostat and its still overheating. No typical water pump symptoms but its leaking all under the engine and I don't see coolant circulating so its likely the pump. I read the chilton's manual which is not very helpful but your video is great.

Check your coolant level when cold. The radiator has pressure when hot. If the car is hot, and coolant is full you can put your hands on the hoses for the heater core, and they should both be hot.

You can break the engine down into three groups, 1998-2001, 2002-2006, 2007-2010. Each group had an improvement over the last. Check with your dealer. Here is a secret Cloyes Gear and Products got the bid to build the timing chain, Melling did the gears, TRW did the tensioner, next year that was moved around between them. One year, 2002 was all made in Mexico by Dynagear, Inc. Due to many factors Chrysler never uses just one supplier for any one part.
