You are right Rick ....getting out of the white wash on mushy beach break at end of session is probably the trickiest part of the sessionZ Managing board exit can make or “break” your day

      Truth.
I used to take the hits easily.... but these days, I don't want to be anywhere near my board when the lip comes down.

I didn't mention it in the video, but I was surfing that day, with Ian Cairns and Daniel Hughes.
They were filming for their Video series... so the whale may be it that episode.

Gee, Rick, now I want to add the SP25 to my list. 9'2 x 33 1/8 @ 163L looks good.

ha ha... and so it goes!
This is a very sweet board, however:
The SP25 is more technical than the Casey Flow 2.0
In the chop you surf, the nose tends to stick into the bits of large chop.... something to consider, but definitely not a deal breaker.

      Hi Super 6,
Most was shot during summer, so around 85 degree days, 69 degree water

Nice review Rick! The SP 25 looks like a winner! Just seeing it handle gutless waves and then some shoulder/head high stuff pretty much covers it! Speed, flat deck, carrying some volume through tail, and looks good rail-to-rail, winning combination! [Edit]: Question, is the Wedge supposed to be faster than the SP25?

Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback.
It truly is a super nice board, that is one of my "active rack" boards at all times!
      The Wedge:
Now, that's a much tougher board to discuss.
That is why I don't post videos or made a review yet... I am waiting for a smaller one to give it a fair test
Which may seem oxmoronish, because I have some really good footage riding my first Wedge (explained below)
      ok:
1st - it may be the BEST board available for performance SUP surfing... by FAR, the fastest board I have ever been on.
1st - (YES another 1st) It may be the absolute hardest board to stand on... even at ample width and huge volume.
yes.... it is as important to understand that it isn't a board for most SUPsters
      I had the huge 9'5 x 33 at 180 liters (yes - 180 liters)
EVERYONE that has tried it says it's the tippiest board they have ever tried.... even accomplished smaller SUPsters.
SO much volume, that it is way too Corky and high out of the water IMO
I got the 9'5 for New England winters, so I got a big one. Big mistake
I was so miserable on it, that I put it in storage after a few sessions in really nice waves.
Then I saw the video from the sessions.... holy crap, I surfed better than my other boards.
It was doing everything I had hoped for.... but I couldn't feel it, and didn't enjoy riding it.
      So bottom line:
The Wedge is an amazing board for less than 1% of SUPsters, who truly possess the ability to ride it.... and they should ride the smallest one they can handle IMO
Wanna be's will hate it and blame the board.
In hopes that I am a recovering wanna be,
I have a smaller Wedge waiting for me to pick it up... we will see if the lower volume will make it easier to stand on. I think being in the water will be much easier.
I should really be riding the 8'8... but stepped down to the 9'3. Hopefully I went small enough to get a better feel for it.
I sold my 9'5 to a young savant ripper.
He has extraordinary balance skills and loves BIG boards.... honestly I never thought I would find a buyer who would be happy with it.
I was so stoked when I thought of him, He kills it on this board!
      I hope this helps!

@@rickweeks You're are a gem! Thanks for the detailed analysis! The word "acceleration" caught my eye in the Wedge description. I can see that the stepped deck may contribute to that high off the water and it's unstable feeling. I think it's a good call to go smaller so you are more at water level. Again, thanks for all your wisdom, analysis, and thoughts!!!!

      @@brianmckenzie1318 Thanks for the comments!
I should be on my 9'3 by next week, so email me , so we can hook up and I will give you my thoughts on the smaller one.
I will know instantly when I paddle out, if smaller and lower volume makes it easier
I know it surfs great, plus I want to see if less thickness gives me more feeling on the water

what I'm amazed is that it's 150L on an 8'11 ”board. if I have not read wrong. how much?

    • @rickweeks
      @rickweeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lalo
      You read it correctly
That means at 235 lbs, I can ride an 8'11 in full winter gear!
It was designed to float Sean Poynter at his ankles, in the APP Tour events, where all his competition is sunk to their waist.
This give him a distinct advantage when catching waves.
So they designed the Pros boards with more relative volume than standard boards.
Since Sean Poynter and Daniel Hughes started doing this, other companies are following with more volume in their Pro boards as well.
ALL Sunova and GenRation pro models are made exactly the same as the Pros ride, simply sized up.
That mean ample volume in shorter length.
You can see in the rocker profile, that it carries volume through the tail.
The thicker tail gives the board more glide in soft waves, when the back foot is on the kick pad.
The rails are low. and in the water, while they rise up sharply to the wide flat deck, to provide ample volume.
It doesn't feel at all corky, but sits nicely in the water, with low wet rails

From 3:23 to 3:50 was Florida... everything else was Cape Cod

150 liters! This board look way slimer in the water ! It looks like a formula one but where is the volume?
