Hi Rick, my name is Brian Payne and I really enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing. I live in Santa Cruz, Ca and surfed all my life. After my hip replacement 5 years ago I started Supping and love being back out in the water. Here suppers are relegated to only a few surf spots if you don’t want to suffer threats and possible injury even though I grew up here, at 74 that is out of the question! Ha. Seeing you on so many waves, having fun, is my dream and I’m stoked you’re living the dream. Keep the videos coming.
Hi Brian, thanks for your support and great comment! You live in one of those holdover territorial places, and sometimes localism is the only way to keep a great break from being overrun with crowds It sucks but it's better than some faceless bureaucrat making up regulations to manage behavior. The great thing about SUP is the ability to reach breaks few surfers can access. I will paddle a mile or two, up a coastline to inaccessible breaks and surf alone. Enjoy that beautiful wave mecca you have and don't let the tough guys have all the fun!
I can’t stop watching your videos! And I love the music selection too. I myself never surfed and started in June, at 61 yr old. It’s tough! You are so skilled … inspiration for me
Thank you so much Jorge... that's awesome! Hopefully you started on the right board, because it is tough when starting from scratch! One thing I urge new SUPster to do is to paddle on flat-water (saltwater, so it has the same float as the ocean) Get very comfortable on your board in very calm water.... ANY waves or boat wakes can make it really hard to build the skills and wake up your "small twitch" muscles (muscles we used as kids to climb trees, fun on uneven terrain) As your comfort increase.. add in more challenging moves like take a step back and spin the board with the tail down in the water a bit... stuff like that. Then pick very calm days to surf. Once you have the basics down, it becomes a whole different ballgame! Stay with it... it WILL get better!!
Glad I could lighten up the winter for you! I gave up winter. I simply can't surf well in a full wetsuit any longer, so when ice forms, my van heads for warm weather.
The ghost hands down has everything happening to create a great board. Perfect water release. Rail to rail transition, no slow spots and effortless wave entry. That’s Da Kine
Thanks, good detective work! Those are all in the plan... I worked long sessions with Bert Burger to seek those exact qualities! We worked a bit more on wave entry on the new version (due in 2 weeks) I want to make sure that it is truly effortless entry in low power conditions that many surf daily. It amazes me more every session 🙂
U make any board look good Rick Great little waves Your summer is coming to a end Ours in Australia is just around the corner can’t wait Hate the cold Missable Thanks for sharing
True that Gary... I have never liked the end of summer but the good news here is our real wave season starts in September and it stays warm enough until November.... then I run to Florida 🤣
Thanks stawdog, my version 2 is very close to shipping. I should have it within 2 weeks for testing Just an update to maximize it's potential... so I am anticipating it will go into production soon!
Wow, so many good waves and stylish surfing as always! Thanks for sharing Rick, it´s nice to have something like this to watch between the occasional windchop that we get here in the Baltic sea. But I guess I shouldn´t complain, any wave you can get is better than no waves, plus just being back from a week of quality surf at Stadlandet Norway makes me content...at least for a short while...haha.
Thanks Guilherme, I am happy that you got something out of it! Keep working on that backside.... SUP is basically made for backside surfing because the heels transfer so much solid leverage to the rail!
Brah, I so needed to see this! Just woke up… It’s a little before 6 AM on Maui and my friends and I will be taking a bunch of supplies to the Westside today. Been feeling so helpless waiting for generators, tents, and essentials to get here on a flight yesterday. Unloading the flatbed and then loading up two 10 foot box U-Haul‘s and hopefully headed out and about six hours. I haven’t felt like getting in the water and surfing… I can’t do it while I know people are suffering. Thanks for posting this though… It replenished my soul for the day. Love you brother ♥️ Maui Deb
Hi Deb, truly catastrophic events and your connection has helped me see just how horrific it is and will remain into the future. Thank you so much for posting Chyna's video.... she articulated the hard truths of this nightmare out to people in a way that can't be understood from official coverage. I shared it so others might hear a first hand detailed and chilling story from one of the survivors that made fortunate decisions and escaped. Please stay strong and lift others, you are more powerful than you know for all those who have been ravaged to their soul. ❤
Thanks Beets... I know I need to post more, and will try to get some more of my projects finished!! There were lots of Ghost in the fog sessions, but the camera can't focus through even light mist, so everything looks like a Bigfoot sighting clip 🤣
Hell, Rick do it if you feel it. I think you dropped a clip one time show a bit of how much work goes into each upload. You have already given so many of us so much joy and inspiration. If you're too busy having fun, you don't owe us anything. Just know we love it whenever you can manage it
Great sessions can never have to many boards showed clip to wife “see you do need more than one” Currently have 4. Look everyday to see if you’ve posted. You’re inspiring. Pete NZ
Hi Pete.... so much good surf in NZ that a large quiver is necessary!!! 😊 I need to make more videos... I have hundreds that I never quite finish. Thanks for the motivation to finish more of them!!
Hi from Aus. Rick.. Loving your vids and reviews. I'm looking at updating to a slightly shorter board, down to 8'10", and am inclined twards either the placid or the flow, and, as I value your opinion, and have a somewhat similar style to you, I was wondering if you could give me what you consider the better of the two and why... Oh, nasty shorebreaks at my local, so able to take a knock or two is important. Cheers and thank"s. John
Hi John Thanks for the great feedback! To know a bit more about you and be able to send links and pics, Please email me at supthecreek@gmail.com To give you the best advice, I will need more info Some quick and dirty comps: Placid is far more stable size for size... example 8'10 Placid is noticeably more stable than the 9' Flow Flow is faster and handles a wider range on condition IMO The Placid is super turny and fun to ride... but needs a bit of "something" from the wave to get into gear The Flow always eluded me until I put Quobba fins on my 9'4 Flow and it turned into a favorite.
Hi Rick first thanks for your videos. I always look forward the next one. Small question I'm riding the Creek and love it ( I saw you tried fins setting twins +1 earlier is it worth to try ?) But my question is about the Longboard sup in the Sunava range. I didn't see you riding that yet. Did you and what would be your choice ?
Thanks subart, I appreciate that! I like the Creek best these days with a 4.5" pivot fin in the center... it loosens the tail up nicely!
