D-Ray you are the man. I got this old 84 200s 3 wheeler from a guy at work. It hadnt run in 8 years and the muffler had rotted off. he cleaned the carb, pulled it twice and it came back to life. However the lack of a muffler was masking a engine noise. $50 bucks for the 3 wheeler and 131 dollars later for a muffler then I get a horrible scraping noise. after watching your video it seemed to be the same noise it made when you demonstrated a slack adjuster. I cranked it up, loosened the adjuster nut, it got quiet as a church mouse. Thanks YOU are the Man. Subscribed and look forward to more tips.
D-Ray, you are a freaking life saver!! I picked up an ATV 185 from an auction and of course the motor was apart (what I call a basket case) in a box. Your videos on the basic processes have been that cool breeze on my hot day! This is my first chain driven cam motor so this has been a learning experience all the way. Thank you so much for your efforts.
Finally got the 85’ Honda 200x running and surprisingly no smoke but the rattling was super loud, great trick to un jam the mechanism. She sounds waaay better thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Good advice and well made video. Most Honda cam chain adjusters will move on their own when the lock nut is loosened if engine is hot. Neat trick with the long metric screw, though.
Just found this gem. Helped me and saved $200. I found a screw that was close but close enough to get a bite. Thats all u need to pull it up and it will not wreck threads.
Thankyou for posting this method! My recently acquired '81 Honda CT125 had a terrible chain rattle and the auto tensioner actually made the noise worse when I slacked off the bolt. Using a 3mm machine screw I pulled the tensioner out and the rattle is completely eliminated, the engine is now as smooth as a singer sewing machine.
Super simple,... Compared to the manual that doesn't really tell you "what" your listening for or what the goal is at this point. Very helpful, thank you.
I have an 84 Honda 200 Big Red thank you for the video on how to adjust the timing chain I did not know about that little screw on how to properly adjust the timing chain
Excellent info a lot of these engines have significant where on the cam journals from people putting too much silicone on the valve cover blocking the oil path
thanks for the advice. cool video. im restoring my first xr200 r. its a little prcey. but i always wanted a bike of my own. mien needs small odds and ends. its nice to know how to ajust this part of the engin. thanks again and have a awsome day.
Of course no store near me has a an m3x.5 screw long enough to do this. Longest I'm finding is 16mm which is very short. Also dont have any spare 3mm spokes on hand either. Hoping to adjust the chain the regular way the manual calls for by getting it running and breaking the 14mm loose and hoping it auto tensions.
Great video, what a help. For the special tool, I have a metric tap and die set with the required M3 x 0.5 die. I found a nail which was about 3.2 mm in diameter and ran a thread onto it. Cost nothing but worked a treat
on the TL J engines best to hold the centre bolt with a spanner and loosen the outer lock nut nip up the centre bolt and retighten the outer lock nut, the TL J engine is what is in the later MK2 TL bikes, rock-hopper & field-trippers from Japan,
very helpful and great video .. thanks i appreciate it . i have another problem with my 99 xr200 first off it hard to start here lately. and kicks back just about everytime, then when i get it running it idles fine, but when i take off and give it and gas ot starts bogging down pretty bad .. and if i get on it, it acts like its wants to go then boggs, go, bogg, go bogg.. ive cleaned the carb atlest 5 times and it still doing it .. what else might be going on ... im thinking a valve problem but i sure hope not
Thanks so much for the great Video. That's the exact noise my Honda ATC is making. I was told it needed tightening but had not idea how to do it. Thanks again, your Tutuorial Video's are the BEST! Chuck
I have a 2004 KLX 125, bought used in bad shape. I got it running good but it makes a horrible noise like a chain rattle. The cam chain tensioner is different from the Honda's of course because this IS THE REAL WORLD. I removed it and it moves freely. Is there any other adjustment I can do? Thank you sharing your knowledge and for affirming what I THOUGHT was causing the noise.
I used your great tutorial video, and tighten my cam chain in my atc 200e like you instructed. Still has a bit of sloppy noise to it. Do you recommend changing out the cam chain with a new one, if you could you show an instructional video for that? Thanks, Chuck
Thanx alot for the video..i have n' xr200r bike 1982 model... The light bike is working with 6 V hade and till light.. The alternator mack 30 volt at the moment and i think it bernt the C.D.I...is it correct? At the moment the bike dons stark at all... Info..in covid time i made complete overall piston cylinder had cam shaft time chine carb ... Please tall me if me magneto is bad or the cdi metal box..thanx alot..noam
Some oil is coming up from this rubber tap. Is not too much but with the dust sticking on it you can clearly see. Could you please give some advice? Thanks a lot.
Nice!!! Thanks so much for the tip! I also have a 1976 CB400f with the same problem. Will the same trick work for that bike, too? Same size bolt/thread?
Release the cam chain tensioner as shown in the vid, but instead of pulling the tensioner up, push it down. that should give you plenty of slack to in stall the cam sprocket. then re-tension the chain.
Hi Mario from Malta nice great video would like to ask you I have removed engine of Honda 185s and have problem with the chain guide the side of the tensioner is ok the other side when I inserted the chain guide the chain came short and cant fit the chain sprocket have service manual but still cant figure out what is happening can you give me some advice the chain guide has the lower piece bent witch is making the chain short did not take notice of the position before removing would appreciate a lot your feed back Thanks for your great videos Cheers Mario
I saw the transalps all over europe in the middle 90's when I was there I even rented one to ride through Germany but they were never much imported here, they said there was no real market but i always thought if the KLR650 and the BMW duals were selling there is always room for competition..
d-ray great vids can you help me i bought a trx 200 1984 model and i get all forward gears hi and lo but no reverse the light comes on the dash but the gear selector dosent feel like its get a gear and well theres no movemrnt of the quad any way hope you ansewer before i rip tear bust some thing any pointers would be good cheers from down under mango
Do you know how to do this on a Yamaha XT 225? I have one that is making noise. I have only ridden about 700-800 miles this year and have adjusted the valves three times. Someone told me to check the valve chain tension. I have no idea how to do that and I can't find a video or tutorial on it anywhere. I think the Yamaha TT 225 is the same engine as well. The bike has over 22,000 miles on it so maybe it's worn out but I have no way to know. Thanks for any info you can give.
hey, wen I did this to mine the timing chain came completely quiet but on the other side in the head it seemed to have created another rattling sound, similar sound as the timing chain but faster rattling. any idea what it could be? thanks!!
Hey D-ray i got a question im doin a rebuild on a 84 trx200 and i was wonderin how the tensioner assembly comes out in order for me to get the top end off.
You're the man. I was scratching my head for days trying to figure out where that sound was coming from after a rebuild. Nice and quiet now. Thanks!
All these years later and these tips are still helping people thanks

D-Ray you’re a life saver brotha. Got the old ice fishing tug 84 big red sounding like new thanks to you. God bless. Fish on 🎣
Old school no BS tech is just what I needed. Time to get after this rattling Big Red.
Love all your videos. Four wheeler, XR's, everything I need in a striaght forward, concise way. Keep em coming.
Just found this gem. Helped me and saved $200. I found a screw that was close but close enough to get a bite. Thats all u need to pull it up and it will not wreck threads.
Every time I have an issue with my 84 big red I turn to you!! Thanks for looking out

Been doin these ATCs my entire life and learned a crap ton from you in two videos!
Super simple,... Compared to the manual that doesn't really tell you "what" your listening for or what the goal is at this point. Very helpful, thank you.
I've run these little engines and modified them since the 80s and never knew that !! Thanks !
if you can't find a 3mm screw a 3mm spoke will work also
Dude u just fixed my stuff. Thanks man. Went to ace and found bolt. Took me less than 2 min.
Great vid mate, I had heard about this method of adjustment, but as always a pic speaks a 1000 words!
I have an 84 Honda 200 Big Red thank you for the video on how to adjust the timing chain I did not know about that little screw on how to properly adjust the timing chain
GREAT!!!!! Just bought one and the chain was rattling like a mother! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

i USED IT AND IT WORKS GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS METHOD FIXES THE PROBLEM WITHOUT REPLACE AUTO ADJUSTER.
Thank you very much! The engine of my Honda CBX 125 is singing like a bird now! Bye bye from Italy.
Excellent info a lot of these engines have significant where on the cam journals from people putting too much silicone on the valve cover blocking the oil path
Worked great after I figured out that the bolt was the wrong size its even quieter now also thanks man
Thank you so much for your videos, so helpful as I navigate our 84 ATC 200M!
Check your valve clearence, if they are good, you probably have either a worn cam bushing and/or worn rocker arm pads where they contact the cam.
You bloody ripper, bloody unreal!!! Thanks heaps D Ray
Thank you sir...your video helped me a lot, I have a honda XR 200 that I need to adjust also...thanks again, and keep it up!
Great info, had never come across the tensioner in the case before. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Certain spokes work if you haven't got a bolt. Great video many thanks for sharing
thanks for the advice. cool video. im restoring my first xr200 r. its a little prcey. but i always wanted a bike of my own. mien needs small odds and ends. its nice to know how to ajust this part of the engin. thanks again and have a awsome day.

Nice little bit of tech there for sure
Great video, thank you very much! Should I do that with a cold engine? My chain do more noise with a warm engine. Thanks
very helpful and great video .. thanks i appreciate it . i have another problem with my 99 xr200 first off it hard to start here lately. and kicks back just about everytime, then when i get it running it idles fine, but when i take off and give it and gas ot starts bogging down pretty bad .. and if i get on it, it acts like its wants to go then boggs, go, bogg, go bogg.. ive cleaned the carb atlest 5 times and it still doing it .. what else might be going on ... im thinking a valve problem but i sure hope not

Great video! Cheers for the knowledge 👍
They made a bike called back in the mid 80's called a "Transalp" XL600V, based on the VT500 engine. Thanks!
Another great video.... did honda make a bike equal to the kawasaki klr650?
Thanks D-Ray. Cool tip!

Question. If the auto tensioner does work. Do you loosen then bolt with the bike going or off to let it self tension?
Thats great knowledge for me i did not know how to do that maybe i can get my ‘84 trx200 running better now
I used your great tutorial video, and tighten my cam chain in my atc 200e like you instructed. Still has a bit of sloppy noise to it. Do you recommend changing out the cam chain with a new one, if you could you show an instructional video for that? Thanks, Chuck

i like that trick i have a few of them motors i am fixing up i will try that thank you and have a good one
Sorry bout that bro, I bet you will get another one some day!
Release the cam chain tensioner as shown in the vid, but instead of pulling the tensioner up, push it down. that should give you plenty of slack to in stall the cam sprocket. then re-tension the chain.
Ur a life saver big guy

Thanks buddy, it was a helpful video
I would sure love to know where you going to get a 3 mm point five threads 2 in long
great simple to follow video
I've watched all your videos on the honda 3 wheeler that you do, but was wondering if you have one on rear bearings and brakes on a 3 wheeler. Thanks
You should go over the centrifugal oil filter in these motors. I traded a guy for one of these and it was packed full of mud.
Thanx for the info!!
Thank you this worked for me.
Very helpful. Thanks again D.
Thanyou D-Ray love your video , just want to know if you can still pull a wheelie with that belly ? hehe "counter balance"

Very helpful video!! Thanks
If your tensioner works would you tighten it when running or when it’s cold?
