  • If you are in need of replacing the OE headlight assembly or wanting to try an aftermarket offering, you are in the right place. I am in the process of going back to stock housings as I have had a poor experience with an aftermarket housing assembly. I go over the issue after the removal and talk about which brand I would avoid.
    Application: 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison CC/SB
    This is a basic level installation and will require just basic hand tools and some care. The ZR2 and ZR2 bison have some minor differences but the process is very similar but if you have AEV Highmark Fender flares, this shows the particulars of having to do this swap.
    In the video, I cover how I completed the installation on my ZR2 Bison with the means and skills I have. See what I did and figure it out for yourself or when in doubt get it installed by a professional.

    Absolutely wonderful video. GM and AEV for that matter need to be looking at your videos as a gold standard, keep up the great videos, Rich!

    Great video! I need to replace the active air shutter, best bumper/grille removal video I found 👍

    Now I am in anticipation to see if you do an LED bulb upgrade, I personally have been thinking about it. I found some larger aftermarket dust covers to fit some proven led bulbs.

      I will test out a couple LEDs in the stock housings. I had tried a few stock but it seems the same discussion is still taking place.

    It's very difficult to find anything in the aftermarket that lives up to the build and test standards of an OE lamp assembly. For my 2020 Bison, I stuck with the OE housings, but vastly improved the lighting performance with LED replacement bulbs from Lasfit, which seemed to be the best ones I could find. I've been completely happy with that setup thus far and have had zero issues.

      I have tried a few brands and seen some better than stock results but nothing quite does it right with a great cut-lines and no weird shadows or light bleeding. With all that said, more white light and greater output alone are probably good enough for most.

      @@exhaustinglife In my case, these are purely for on-road performance. For the signal, marker, reverse, and stop lights, it wasn't even close. LED wins hard on those. For the headlamps, I can see room for debate.
      I have Baja Designs ditch lights, chase lights, and a light bar for trail work.

      @@JoeMoutard you are exactly right, I was staying on the topic of the headlights. I had run the Baja Designs Squadrons, XL and S8 forward facing lights to make up what the OEM lenses could not do.

      @@exhaustinglife To be fair, I'm actually using your build as a primary education source for my own. The Mallett kit that's been sitting in my garage for way too long goes in this weekend.

    I love your videos. I’ve done many of the mods that you do videos on. Here’s one that I haven’t seen yet and might be a good idea for a future video. Once you install 35”s, how do you recalibrate your Speedo to be accurate. Thanks for the video. Very thorough as usual..

    • @exhaustinglife
      @exhaustinglife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was fortunate to do the Mallet Supercharger installation just before as PCM was updated for the supercharger mapping and I added in the tire combo at that time. Otherwise, I would have used the AEV speedo calibrator

    I know odds of this getting answered are slim, but, i have a 19 zr2. I do not have the bolts near the grille like you show. Does this mean i need to remove everything?

      I'll try my best... what 2 bolts are you talking about? can you pause the video and let me know what the time is when I'm talking about those specific bolts?

    Those bumper filler panels, where can I find them? Great video thank you!

      They are a GM part directly available from the dealership. Just ask for parts for any ZR2 Bison from 2019-2022

    Might be a dumb question but do you have to do all this to change the bulb? (I’ve had other vehicles that required pulling the bucket to change bulbs) (Not a Colorado owner-yet)

    • @exhaustinglife
      @exhaustinglife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No this is to change out the entire housing assembly. The bulbs are fairly easy and can be done in 30 mins with the Passenger side being a little harder because you need to remove a cover that directs air to the intake box.

    Have you had a chance to test any new bulbs yet? I’m trying to decide which route to go

    Why did you end up returning to stock lamps?

    • @exhaustinglife

      No luck with any quality aftermarket parts. The housings were trash and degraded in just about 1 year see this video:

    I have a ZR2 with the Highmarks and wonder if I can do the same. Way easier than disconnecting my winch and removing the front bumper and bull bar

    • @exhaustinglife
      @exhaustinglife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its definitely doable. I did this to install the housings and now to remove them and return to stock.

    Whoever designed the way you have to remove half the vehicles panels to replace the headlights should be sacked drawn and quartered and sued by every Colorado owner.

    • @exhaustinglife

      It certainly is a chore and I am a little spoiled having come from the full size world where two pull pins after opening the hood was all that was needed.

    Same for zr1?

    • @exhaustinglife
      @exhaustinglife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The headlight assembly removal / install is the same for any 2015-2022 Colorado or Canyon except you need to remove the entire bumper fascia vs just the filler panels.
