    The "Ringneck Doves" next door, live under the eves of that house...their coos are very soothing, wish they weren't reffered to as "Mourning Doves" as the sound is not one of mourning. Thank you for the information Maddie & Jamie Leigh

      I adore doves. My bedroom window, on the second story of the house I grew up in as a child, had a flower box on it. One year, the sweetest mother dove made a nest in it and laid her egg there. A lot of animals gravitated to me as a child for whatever reason, and this dove was no different. She was completely trusting of me, never flew away when I went and put my face up against the window to just watch her, and eventually she allowed me to gently pet her through a part of the broken screen on my window that pulled away from the edges enough to fit my hand through. However, if anyone else entered my room she would fly away. I was the only one she would allow near. I’d sit there for a long time each day just talking to her, and she so sweetly seemed to listen intently and coo. Eventually her egg hatched and it was incredible to see that baby dove grow and develop from hatching to leaving the nest, and to see the mother dove, whom I fittingly named “love”, care for her baby so well. Even after her baby hatched, she was still fully trusting of me, and still welcomed my gentle little pets. Once her baby was old enough to leave the nest, she eventually left as well, but she’d still visit my window box from time to time, and her and her baby (even after it had grown and was no longer always with the mother) always stuck around our house, in our tress or perching themselves on our deck (and it wasn’t for food, as we never fed them). I had grown to know them so well that it was easy to recognize them from the other random doves. We moved when I was 10, well over a year at least after she had first made her nest, and they were still around. That was the last time I saw them, but even 18 years later, I still fondly think about that dove from time to time. And I agree wholeheartedly, their coos have nothing to do with the feeling of mourning. Their coos have always brought me peace, and ever since then, every time I hear a dove coo, it puts me right back to the memories of being a child sitting by my windowsill, enjoying the company of a very special friend.

    My pigeon and cockatiels get along great. I don't keep my macaw and larger parrots in the same area though. They all live on my lanai but I'm lucky that I live in SW FL so the weather is perfect for them.

      I’ve never had both at the same time but I imagine well behaved smaller parrots would probably be fine, as long as they don’t have nutcracker beaks like one or two species can

    From what I understand, a racing team has both males and females. They are flying home, not to their mate. Separating them from their mate seems so cruel if this is true.

    Recently ended up with two street pigeons after moving to Europe this year. Both have medical issues and can’t survive in the wild. They bounded together last month and I’m hoping they will become foster parents for lost babies in my city :)
    I have had the hen for longer and i annoy her but she tolerates me giving her medical treatments and if shes molting she will tolerate neck scratches. Her boyfriend i only got recently and they paired up within days. He is missing most of his right leg and is such a beefcake 😂
    He is still a bit nervous with me after i grabbed him from the park and wrapped him in my coat to get him to the vet. Thankfully we are on day 3 of prosthetic leg demos and now he understands that the blue tape helps him walk and more importantly MATE, he just sits in my lap and lets me poke around all i need. He’s such a himbo 😂

    I'm unsure. When she comes in from foraging and flying around, she sleeps/preens on the bed. It is summer now, but I'm not sure about what winter will bring. So far we just open the door when she wants out, and closing it when she comes in. I would imagine she would prefer to be in the warm home at least part of the time. she either sits on a stool on the porch and calls, or flaps her wings against the door windows if we don't respond right away. She prefers to fly in the door rather than being caught and returned. As we have two dogs, we shake the bedfurs out regularly anyway, so not too worried about dander. We have diapers; but only when we're stuck in the house all day due to weather. She knows the kitchen is the group "Food dish" for the family and is very interested in watching any action in there. Her tiny poops are not appreciated there; so she must wear one if she's watching "the kitchen show." I have made winter coats for my chickens before, but not too sure how she feels about that.

    Thanks for posting this. Aside from our 12 parrots, I've got a white female homing pigeon that is bonded to me. I can see why they are so prolific, because my Gertie is always exhibiting mating behaviors with me and then about every 6 weeks, she lays 2 eggs and sits on them until she realizes they aren't hatching. At that point, she starts the process all over again. I try to discourage her attempts to mate but she is so persistent and then she lays eggs anyways. What's the best way to discourage this because I'm afraid she could be susceptible to egg binding?

    • @MaddieSmith
      @MaddieSmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Consistent lighting schedules and a good calcium supplement! My one girl was laying every two weeks for awhile and scared the heck out of me. I have UVB lights on a timer to keep lighting schedules consistent year round and i found that it cut down on her production. Also not touching her anywhere but her head/neck, and leaving her eggs in until she gives up on them (which it sounds like you’ve been doing)
      Some parrot vets unfamiliar with pigeons don’t know, but the bird birth control shot is extremely dangerous and very often fatal for pigeons. Thankfully I knew this ahead of my appointments with a new avian vet, had I not, they may have accidentally killed her.
      Remember they’re built for frequent, fast reproduction so as long as you’re giving a good calcium/multivitamin supplement, a good diet, and she’s keeping weight on, she should be alright!

    What kind of bird toys do you have for a pidgeon?

    • @MaddieSmith
      @MaddieSmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They like shredded paper toys the best! Or any kind of foraging toy where they can pull out pieces. They also like little bells and mirrors, which are fine for pigeons but are avoided with parrots!

    I'm actively looking to get a dove/pigeon. The problem is, the rescues are too far away and I can't find any breeders that aren't online. Is that how people get them? Also information on care and diet is not easy to find either. Can someone point me in the right direction because I'm miserably failing at this 🙃.

    Beautiful you should dead ass make pillows out of the pigeon feathers. You'd need to wash them very good beforehand though but you could make bank off pillows.
