I have a pigeon and a dove, both rescued when they were babies. They are my children, and I love them very much, and yes, they do require a LOT of attention from me.

Hey coyote520 ! It takes a person with a big heart to rescue a pigeon and a dove! When I read comments like yours, it brings me joy... cuz there are still kind people out there like yourself! :)
Hahahah, right?! birds are very needy pets! :D.. it's adorable though.. and that's what I really like about them! :D

@@mylittlepigeon278 I have rescued many, many animals. They all require a lot of work and patience. My pigeon and my dove, are both very special. Their personalities are always amusing, and they are extremely loving birds. They follow me around the house, and always keep life interesting. How many old school cowboys do you know of, that would rather hang out with his birds, rather than go hang out at a bar? Lol

back in the '80s I rescued a pigeon from our back alley that couldn't stand or fly though I never figured out what was wrong with him (or her?)... a few weeks of TLC in our house seemed to do the trick and it eventually could move about just fine! it flew out, and would fly back in whenever a door or window was opened
sadly by that point my parents wouldn't let the bird stay with us anymore, and I guess it finally learned to stop trying to come visit. but I still think about my pigeon whenever I watch your channel

Hey, Xofer21! Thank you so very much for coming back to watch my video.. even though, there is a very long break between the times when I post anything :( I really appreciate your time!
Thank you for sharing the lovely, and yet sad story of yours. It warms my heart knowing that there are people like you out there who don't stay ambivalent to the injured trivial animal like pigeon! But it's sad for me to hear that eventually, your parents didn't let the bird to stay with you..... You said that it was back in the 80's.. long time ago, and yet, you still remember this pigeon.... isn't it fascinating how those small creatures can get into our hearts so fast and stay in our thoughts forever.

This is exactly how it went for our budgies. We'd spend everyday with our first one for years, him out the cage with us and toys, he developed bad hormonal issues and had to hump his toys everyday. Despite our constant attention and bonding with him, and making sure he had a good diet/vet visits said he was okay, and we always tried to keep his hormonal behaviour down in every way we could. When we got the second bird, his hormonal issues stopped. He doesn't hump any toys anymore, or the other budgie, he is more himself again :) however, like you said...they aren't that close, they bicker and refuse to share food and the new bird is young and fiesty, however they're bonded and will preen and feed eachother despite not being super chummy ❤

i currently have, umm, 6 pigeons (plus a feral who is in a crate recovering from a badly broken leg). there was definitely a shift in dynamics as each new pigeon arrived - they have all been found as babies and hand raised and have underlying issues that made releasing them impossible. they are great company and lots of fun. i say this even after the newest pigeon (9 weeks old) decided she was now sleeping in my bedroom a couple of nights ago and woke me up by jumping on my face the last 2 mornings.
and i still stress about leaving them when i go out of the house.

I fully agree with you. We tend to think on behalf of our animals and think they need company when in fact they are happy just being by themselves and that they have us all to themselves.
It’s the sense of guilt in us that when we are not home, they’re lonely. I believe they do, but on the other hand, they would get used to it. Perhaps?

It's good that you are bringing up this topic. I have dozens of rescued pigeons at home and have observed that they form pairs with those they find sympathetic. You can't just take any two pigeons, put them together, and think it will be fine. I offer people the chance to temporarily take their pigeon, and with a bit of luck, it will pair up here. Then I return two pigeons to them. I wish every pigeon owner had such an opportunity. When they are in a true pair, it's a beautiful sight.

So true .. I hand-feed pigeons on my top floor balcony here in Montréal, Canada, and they re sooooo jealous of each other and stake out their turfs!!! They are really adorable. And listen to me. They don’t mind when I pet or tease them since they eat on my hand, on me, etc.but not too long. Lollll. If I only had one perhaps but they make each other edgy since they’re wild city birds and there’s at least 15 different who come visit me. They all have their own personality I’ll tell you. I even feed two very young ones with still a little squeaky cooing yet. I feed them peanuts!!! They adore peanuts and rice. I’m trying safflower seeds tomorrow. I have to use it all up..

definitely appreciate how informative, these little big complications and decisions, consequences, mechanics.
that are so real, and not how you/i thought, but we got to deal with it now the situation turned the way it did.
the comments are also useful with their different experiences.
a key word/mechanic i just got from another video is to be careful with imprinting.
you're first only i guess of course, it imprinted as you're mate and then the competitive unclear relationship with another burb. one "should"have let the birds pair up and relate like that to the owner,
But i love the video (s openness/honesty/good faith/whatever, perfect or whatever) the situation is something and we'll figure it out. .. with lots of experience and love (and pain)

I rescued a pigeon. Still had its yellow feathers and had to be hand fed. I’ve had it for 7 months now. His or her name is Omelet. Daughter named him or her. I released it one day thinking it would not come back. It left so quickly. I was sad. Many hours later I find it on the lip of my garage. He or she lets me pick her up only when she wants to be picked up. 😆 Would hang out on my shoulder when I’m working on something outside. Now it’s become a normal routine. I force her to explore the outside world by releasing her around 6a and when I open my garage around 10a she flies right in to drink her water and eat her seeds.

Called NPA and he's abandoned (black band, no numbers). I have his home all set up in my room and everything but I just can't get him somewhere safe. If this doesn't work out I think I will end up adopting but it breaks my heart to think of losing this guy.

She did not care at all. I bought her another companion bird years later, thinking she was lonely while I was in school. The bird also died in front of her. Again, she did not care. She's a human-loving bird lol.

Thanks a lot for such a great video 😀 I live with two wondetful pigeons as well. But my story is a bit different: they're a couple and both of them stay with me sine the beginning. But twice I brought to my appartment two others, a girl and a boy, both have got a neurological disease. While each of them were recovering, when I knew it was safe for all of them, I let them spend a little time together. And yes, I agree with your observations and opinion: pigeons are veeery social creatures, incredibly and deeply "in" relationship with their mates (pigeons or human being, or both 😃), but they're territorial and jelous as well. Exactly as you told and desribes 🙂 Greetings from Poland!

ive wanted a pigeon for an incredibly long time, and recently thats just increased by the TON because i got to pet one in person (a friend of mine owns two!), now, i usually stay cooped up at home all the time, but i have school, which is several grueling hours being bored for both me AND the potential pigeon. id be fine with getting two so they dont get sickly depressed, but im also nervous about them potentially being TOO focused on EACHOTHER, or.. simply hating eachother and then i have double the poop cleanup to take care of. i know the easy solution is just,, "dont get a pigeon then!" but they really do seem like a perfect match for me, and the first option if i ever was allowed to get a small winged animal.

There is a problem with keeping birds indoors. They become adapted to the heat. And if anything happens to you, or you part with them, other owners put them outdoors and they freeze which is a very painful death. I've even seen this happen to a barn owl that was confenscated from it's owner because they kept it indoors. I tried to tell the falconry owner it had been placed with by the authorities why it was shivering, but they would not listen, and a couple of weeks later after sleeping outside in winter the bird was dead. And what a very slow and painful way to dye.

Got one male pigeon I spend most of the day with, but as my days get busier, I'm thinking of giving him a partner. Even now it is still a blessing to have just one, but I will keep my options open.

Long Story 5:30 THIS is what happened when I gave my male Betta fish, Matsuda, a girl Betta, he would be aggressive with other fish because his race was trained for hundreds of years to fight against other fish, and surprisingly, this happened with a fish of his same kind, she got kind of injured even tho she didn't do anything to him or wanted to start a fight, it was on Matsuda's instincts, but the good part is that we had another aquarium where we had many fish of different species that all were friends each other, so I introduced her into that aquarium, and she was never so happy!!! She would follow other fish anywhere and eat all the food I gave her!
😢Sadly, months later she died bc of her previous injures😢😢

My rescue pigeon goes through spells of wanting to pack his bags and leave. He is a homer. He wants to fly home and he will get over that in a month or two. I have been down the road of thinking another cat will be swell. It never works out like you think.

Hey, Chris5942 ! Thank you for watching my video and sharing a little bit about what you are dealing with. You have a big heart that you rescued a pigeon! It warms my heart knowing that there are still kind people like you out there! The description, that your pet pigeon wants to pack his bags and leave made me laugh (not the fact of it , but the phrasing). And yes, It'll take time for him to get used to the new place... you know that already :) And totally agree with you: it almost never works out as you think! :D

@@mylittlepigeon278 People think I am nuts when I tell them his story. I assume it is a he until an egg appears. When I first saw him, I thought he was a hawk. He has the coloring of a kestrel. He was sitting by my groiund bird bath. He was obviously injured and couldn't fly very well. My neighbor already tried to chase him down once and failed. Bird didn't care for my neighbor. He has excellent taste in people, I can tell you. I saw him standing under the feeders but not interested in the black oil sunflower seeds scattered around so I went out the bird food store and bought something I knew pigeons liked. When I got home he was still there. I walked over to the feeder and he moved a little way away. Limping badly. I asked him if he would let me help him and I dumped out a big pile of food while he watched me. He was so hungry he ate and ate even while my mower guy mowed right past him. Later in the day, I went out to see if he was still around and didn't see him under the feeder. I turned around and there he stood in a pool of blood behind me. I talked to him and told him I would help if he let me. I slowly went over to him and scooped him up. We went to the vet shortly thereafter and I figured he got clocked by a car. Turns out he had something wrapped so tight around his foot that it was cutting into the toe. Vet removed the string and he moved into a safe cage in my sunny room with 3 cats. This should be interesting. I have noticed that pigeons hold their own with cats. Not sure I trust that thought. He growls at me but he will eat out of my hand now and we are working on it. He is dusty red/white/green and purple speckled feathers on his neck. Very pretty bird. Life isn't about where we end up but who we bring along for the ride.

Very interesting. I have an imposed pigeon that I think is a male.
A friend of mine found this big potato of about 7 to 10 days old in the middle of a boulevard. Yellow duvet, still having the point on it's beak and both corner of his mouth yellow. So of course knowing that I knew how to take care small hookbeak birds, she gave it to me.
I thought that once able to be on his own I would release it outside. I just could not. It has been 18 months and what a bird. Named Elvis, I call him my pingouin. Exactly as you say he follows me everywhere. I mean everywhere.
But ... I have six small birds, from parotlet to cockatiel (who is 24 yrs old) and they are scared sh*t of him. He runs after my 6lbs dog and pinches her tail, throws everything from tables or counters on the floor, throwing more of his food on the floor instead of eating it. I could go on and on. But somehow I just luv this huge grey flying thing. I did not know of pigeon as pets before he came into my life. Quiet, non destructive compared to a parrot.
Thank you so much for your videos. They are really helpful. Specially this one. I'll stay with one.

I have a feral pigeon called Steve (I'm fairly sure he is male). Anyway he was injured by a predator (probably a cat) and his right eye was so badly damaged he cannot see out of it. Six months later he is fully healed although blind in the right eye. He loves being on his own and tells me off if I stroke him to much. I cannot let him go as he will almost certainly fall prey to another animal but he seems really happy living with me where he is fed and looked after. He hardly ever comes out of the bathroom and doesn't follow me around so I guess I have a pet pigeon for life without being followed lol.
