  • Vlog of me running the 2021 Brighton Marathon race.
It was great finally getting to run a city marathon again after 2 years of no races. I took my Gopro along to record my experience. My goal was to take the race super easy as I had only 6 weeks of training. Despite the slow pace, my lack of leg strength made the last 10km a challenge. The race was essentially a training run as I build up for running a solo ultramarathon.

Nice video James. Keep up the good work 👍. I’ve done a half and now doing a full in about 3 months. Several people have said that the race begins at the 32 km mark. Thanks for such a realistic video

Thanks Glen! Definitely agree with that. Make sure you look at taking some gels such as SiS or GU. Marathons get hard at around the 32km mark because that's when your carbohydrates get depleted - it takes around 3 hours I think. Running gels will help make the last 10km less painful! Good luck 🙂

I ran it in 2021, not a huge fan of the course but great support from the locals 👍

Yeah, I think the course is mixed. Some parts are amazing. The industrial area 5-10km from the finish is a bit grim. I agree that the crowds are amazing!

Very exciting! Good luck. I've heard they've changed the route slightly this year but it's still mostly hills in the first half and flat in the second. I'd recommend running the first half conservatively, as the second half is perfect for a negative split. I'm sure you know, but I'd highly recommend having a good nutrition strategy. Lots of gels to avoid that 3 hour wall.
Hopefully you're in the taper now so focus on getting a good recovery before the event! I'm actually running Southampton marathon on the same day. Looking forward to a nice spring marathon!

Hey when you filmed, did you just have your phone on your hand or were you using something to attach it to you? I'm running next week and thinking of making a vlog too!

Hey, I used a GoPro. I find it much easier to film with and stabilisation makes it easier to watch. I also don’t need to worry about dropping it or getting it wet.

Hi James I am running Brighton in 2024. Do you have any advice please? Thank you

Definitely! The route has changed slightly but nearly all the hills in Brighton marathon are in the first half. So even if you feel good, it's worth taking the first half of the marathon slightly easier. Don't push too hard on the hills in the first half. They say marathons don't start until 30k, so try and keep it easy for the first 40k. Good luck with Brighton! I hope it goes well!

It's a good route for a first marathon. It does have some hills but they are all in the first 10km. The second half of the course is pretty flat. You can get the elevation profile of the race from the marathon website. It's roughly 100m elevation gain over the route. The hills are also fairly gradual. I think the steepest is in the first 500m of the race. Hope that helps!
