@@sandeepmortal To get a more sax like sound hum while playing, to get a more clean sound play softer and with slighty less lip pressure, but dont lose all of the lip pressure or you'll be out of pitch.

I just got one. I played clarinet in school, but that was over two decades ago. I hadn't touched a reed instrument since -- and it really showed! This is a really nice instrument to start on, though, being rather inexpensive and having no moving parts to maintain.

Awesome review, Jeremy! I just bought a Xaphoon and I've never played a reed instrument. I was able to get a decent tone out of the box and play melodies after only about 10 minutes of practice. I'm a decent recorder player, so that probably helped. Just struggling a bit to shape the timbre of the tone. The whole dimension of ambouchature is new to me. Anyone has some more in depth videos on how to shape the tone? Overall, amazing value for 65 bucks. I'll have fun with this instruments for years to come.

The trick to playing the xaphoon is to remember that, since it uses a tenor saxophone reed, you have to take as much mouthpiece into your mouth as you would for a tenor sax or a bass clarinet. it seems counterintuitive when the instrument is so small.

Wow, first time I've actually *seen* a xaphoon... Very cool instrument! How large a range can it play? Two octaves?
But as a longtime ensemble recorder player, I think it's wrong to criticize it so harshly... When played correctly, a recorder can sound *much* better than that!😅 Plus that's a cheaper plastic one, the nicer wooden ones some of my group members play sound like a warm, reedy flute.😊

I actually bought a Xaphoon from Brian at a Swap Meet on Kahului, Maui back then in the late 70's for $20. Brian demonstrated the bamboo sax and talked about how it was made. He burned the holes into the bamboo with a stick and then he played it like a pro jazz musician. He's on TH-cam in all of his glory. I wish him well.

When i do mic it, i just put one in front of it as close to the bottom as i can. I switch off between Vandoren and Rico tenor reeds. Both are 2 1/2 size. @JeremyKatzMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Patrick Archibald Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm glad i could inspire you to play an instrument. It would still be possible to play the xaphoon, but you would not be able to hit the lowest note because it needs to have all of the holes covered. There are some other instruments out there that have less holes. I am learning how to play a japanese flute called a shakuhachi. It only has 5 holes. You can try something like that too! to keep the reed in good condition do you have 2 take it of like on a sax or is the lid enough?

    Hi! Nice review.
Which technic you used for two kind of sounds 2:00 and 2:29?
Sorry if I expressed my question wrong, I'm beginner in reed instruments. Thanks!

Does it have a cork like other xaphoon brands?

You are hilarious me you explain things very well. Nicely done video, I just saw an ad for this instrument and immediately came to YT...yours was the first video I saw. Very thorough, very entertaining, and I'm buying one because of your video. Going to see what else you've done. Thanks.

Hello! Thanks for the video, helped me a lot!
I want to buy a Xaphoon...but I have problems choosing the material. So I know I will play it outdoor...like in camping trips or so :D. Aaand I know I really like the sax-sound of it. Is there any difference between the two? 'Cause I noticed the pocket sax is a lil bit "stronger", but I would definitely love to have a hand-made one.
Sooo...could you recommend me one of the two?

Beia Voicu Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm not sure if there is a difference between the bamboo and the plastic xaphoons sound. I only have the plastic one. I'm sure the bamboo xaphoon would not break, as long as you are a little careful. bamboo is very strong! I would not worry. I also want a hand made one! The good thing about the bamboo ones is they come in different keys, so that is another plus. And they are really cool! I think either one is great! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

Yeah! I bet that, with the right music, the xaphoon could elicit that same feeling
