Neil has a talent for just flat out killer solos , wow and it's been years since i have played it , glad i watched this because to be honest i forgot about this gem of a tune , dust off my LP time , great job Julian !!
Great job!! Neil Young certainly has an unconventional lead style, but that has never stopped him from inserting some really long jams into some of his most memorable songs-like this song and Cowgirl in the Sand. Whatever you may think of his style, it certainly works for him. For myself, I I prefer his fills to the long drawn out solos, but that’s just me. Again, well done.
As an intermediate player improving my solos, this is a super helpful video. Thanks man! You nailed it. By the way, my telecaster with vintage 64 pickups through a cheap, monprice 15 watt tube amp with the gain on 4 and the reverb on 7 mimics the lead tone very nicely.
MAN! ARE YOU GOOD! That is so spot on and you nailed the tone with two Fender guitars. I believe that the original version was two Gretsch guitars, a 6120 for Neil and a White Falcon for Danny Whitten.
Neil played his '53' Gibson Les Paul he calls "Old Black" through a 1959 Fender Deluxe Amp when he wrote and recorded "Down By The River" that's what he told me when i met him in Vancouver. He wrote it at the same time as Cinnamon Girl and Cowgirl in the sand while delirious in bed in Topanga Canyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever. He also told this to an interviewer back in 1984 "“Down By The River” defined the guitar sound Young perfected with Crazy Horse, played on a vintage instrument he called “Old Black”, a 1953 Gibson Les Paul that he’d bought in 1967 for $50. Years later, he was still recalling the excitement of the first time he played it through a vintage 1959 Fender Deluxe: “Immediately, the entire room started to vibrate. I went, ‘Holy shit!’ I had to turn it halfway down before it stopped feeding back.” The sessions for Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere were the first time he’d used the combination in the studio".
jgarcia-yours is the absolute bestest of all the down by the river tutorials. theres nobody even close. whenever i hear this song i cant help but think of the very first time i ever heard it; summer of 1970 at a camp in maine.but you had a great one about a year ago of the whole song and i cant find it anywhere. where is it?
This is not a good example of trolling. Just so you know: The best Neil Young solo uses only one note and even an infant can play it. Listen to "Cinnamom Girl". One note dude, just one note and it is awesome!
Its not the difficulty, Jesus if your a musician then you should know blues and rock and roll are about the feel and soul man, so groove on baby, peace.
Well, it’s not exactly rocket science but it’s bang on. Sounds good. The hardest part is probably getting the tones right. Great job on the backing tracks.
Nice low camera angle, great shot of the back of your knuckles. watch your own video BEFORE you post it. Or is this "Guess how to play down by the river" knuckle tutorial. Sorry man, you had the best version that can't be seen
It's a shame that Bradley Cooper inspired you to play this, all he did was air guitar to it! WAtch Neil young and Crazy Horse live, that's true inspiration mate
It may be very very simple, but it's one of the greatest and most intense guitar solos ever. Less is more!!!!
Yes, even I can play it!
It’s more of Neil’s style. It sounds like he’s about to lose his groove but it always comes back.
Excellent work, Neil's proud I'm sure. Thanks for sharing
This will help me learn it. Very crisp and beautiful tone from your guitar and skill. Thank you!
It was well worth the wait, great job, nice to hear your telecaster with the foil pickups again.
MAN nICE TONE whats your amp?
Thanks for doing this! one of my favorites of all time
Thanks for showing Danny's parts! They are 'essentially' for the whole thing, magic.
Bradley Cooper inspired me to watch this video. Great job mate!

Thanks a lot, I'm so learning this, such cool, laid back lines.
That is note for note, nuance perfect.... my favorite guitar piece ;-)
I think I've just found the coolest video on TH-cam! ❤️ 🎸
Thanks for watching!
I usually really critical about people covering Neil as nobody sems to ever get it...but this is really great. Really did that tone.
I cant tell the difference, it's damned near perfect and this is probably my favorite bluesy piece I've listened to a hundred times over the years ;-)
This is so fucking awesome I can't even stand myself. You did a bang-up job. Excellent
This is so awesome I can't even stand myself. You did a fantastic job now could you do it again for about 12 or 13 or 14 or 15 minutes LOL
Great job, loved how you wove both guitar solos together just like on the record
Nailed it. I tried to learn this back in the day. Came close.
Crushed it!

You know He means business when you see a Callaway tee and a wedding ring!

I have no idea how you did this, but you did it perfectly.
How are people impressed by young on this solo? Literally something someone would write after playing guitar for a year.

J. García I'm honestly not trolling. I'm a big fan of his music, I am just also a musician.
No, it's not flashy. It's not a demonstration in virtuosity. This song is about feel, and groove. It's a blues song!
Its not the difficulty, Jesus if your a musician then you should know blues and rock and roll are about the feel and soul man, so groove on baby, peace.
technical ability has very little to do with the quality of a piece of music

Thanks!
