Neil Young took drop D tuning and made a hall of fame songwriting career out of it. I've been playing this song for a few yeas but I still stop to watch your video so I can REALLY know how to play it! Love all the little details you added.
Another Gem from 12 ft. His fine work enables myself in fine tuning songs I have played for years. Thanks for helping us all in our guitar playing journeys. Once again you are the best!
I had played this before based on what I'd seen online; your cover is well beyond that. Sounds great and I am enjoying learning it. Thank you for posting it, and I will look further into your site for more tunes.
Was 11 yrs old when I came across this song around 1971... got hooked on his guitar playing ever since. Learned double D dropped tuning from his catalog of songs.
This is the first song that I worked out all the parts to, and recorded on my old 4-track by myself. 2 guitars, bass, 2 voices and an old Alesis drum machine for the drum track. I forget how I mixed it down, but I fit everything into 4 tracks somehow. Yeah it was a little muddy, but 19 year old me was pretty proud of myself!
I heard, but did not see, Neil in concert last month. It was $400 for lawn seats, $20 beers and no jumbo screen so unless you pay thousand you won't see him. In order to do this song correctly you need to put your camera about 2 football fields away from yourself and charge $1000 for the lesson to capture the Neil vibe

I would never pay that kind of money for any concert. I don’t care who it is, or how much I like them.
Saw him in Toronto in the 90s with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden opening. A huge portion of the audience left after the opening acts. I walked down to the lawn and laid down on the grass (the show was on a baseball field). Neil came on and played for 3 hours. One of the best shows I ever saw.
First of all, this may just be the best comment ever! Had me rolling laughing at the last sentence. I seen him a couple times when tickets were 30 - 40 dollars. One of the concerts three of us drank so much booze, (don't remember what kind but whiskey I think) one was passed out in his seat as I was basically carrying the other guy out to the car after about the third song as I was throwing my guts up. Then the dude I carried out passed out on the hood of the car. I was disappointed about leaving and had beers listening from outside waiting for it to be over. Then the dude woke up from the hood of the car and asked "how was Neil Young?" Good times. Both the other two guys are dead now. Cheers and RIP Billy and Tim.
I play Gold Dust Woman in this Double Drop D tuning. Awesome lesson as usual, lots of details to take it as far as we want. Thanks for the extra material on your Patreon site.
Bravo! Great lesson. Felt the thrill of learning how to make a great song sound correct. I saw Sonic Youth open for Neil and Crazy Horse in '91. Both bands were mind-blowing. If there are any Sonic Youth fans out there, you can do a passable version of "Total Trash" on the E and A strings in this tuning
Absolutely great lesson! One of my first records in Junior High School. An even better style contrast was Stephen Stills/Neil Young like in Almost Cut My Hair.
10 silver saxes A bass with a bow The drummer relaxes And waits between shows For his cinnamon girl!!! What a verse!!!! I love the live version where they repeat the bridge and expand on a second solo. Stretches it out a bit. This song is far too short.
Great video as always Doug. On another note ( no pun) I had mentioned to you how I had revisited Axis, Bold as Love, and we both agreed we almost forgot how good it was. It had seemed to get lost between Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, Band Of Gypsies, and Hendrix in the West. Well, another album I have been revisiting lately is the first Eric Clapton solo album from Aug 1970. It seemed to get lost in the mix of The Bluesbreakers " Beano" album . Creams second and third album Disraeli Gears, and Wheels of Fire, the Blindfaith album, and the Layla album. Though Clapton doesn't have the thick woman tone or long sustains and firey licks. The guitar solos are masterful in their clean but out of phase in between pick up switch tone. Mixed with a little wah wah. The album has horns and back up singers. A large band. But right from the begining as in the song Slunky, till the last song Let it Rain it has masterful maj to min solos with an emphasis on economy of licks, taste and thought. Don't go from memory. One day when you have a chance listen to it with headphones and you will see or better yet hear what I mean. You don't have to do a video on it. I just want you to see how that album was much more then it first appeared to be when everyone was saying the Gibson sound was gone. But that out of phase Fender sound is unmistakeable there with no real gimmicks or pedals to hide the playing. Also I am in no way comparing Hendrix and Clapton. I love both of their music. It's like I love Pizza, but I still love Lasagna too. I just think this album is a 54 year sleeper that just get's better too. Peace.
Thanks for the lesson. Been playing this wrong for years. Saw an old video where Neil Young showed some guy on the sidewalk, or in a parking lot, the double drop D tuning. Duh! Thanks again. Was already subscribed ;-)
You might as well play in standard tuning instead of drop tuning here in this lesson. Its the bass notes also. The whole point of the drop tuning is to use all six strings ringing in the chord shapes. Especially the three open D notes in the first position chord and the slidfing barred third, fifth and seventh positions chords. Its way thicker and fuller. The original white volume II 1969-1973 COMPLETE MUSIC Niel Young book.. shows the exact use of this drop tuning.
Way cool. I play that alone using the double drop D but on 2nd and 3rd frets as D and then the intro riff there with my pinky using open 6th and 5th till I do the G. Hope that's clear. What I'm saying is I never walked up the neck and it sounded right. lol Great pickin'.. as usual - one thing.. could you by any chance record both parts singly and then post the whole song or is it maybe a copyright thing?
I used to have a guitar book of Decade where the turn around on Cinnamon Girl is given as a slide down and up rather than a jump. I wonder now what is correct.
Gear question for you. Looks like you are threading the neck strap button through the face of your strap to compensate for one button being on the back and the other being on the side of the guitar. Is that right? I ask, because I have an Epiphone ES-339 with the same orientation and can find no other way of securing the strap without twisting it. I very much want to move the button, but like the SG, there is really no place to move it to.
Nothing fancy about it, just connecting to the front strap button so the strap lies flat faced like that. If there's a twist in the strap to connect with the button at rear of guitar, I let that twist happen behind me. Hopexthat made sense
@@12footchain Totally makes sense. Funny how none of this stuff mattered when I was younger, but now I can feel every ounce of my 339. Getting a much wider strap, like you have, and keeping it untwisted seems to matter now.
Well, not 100% sure, but I've seen a lot of stories that Jim Messina from Buffalo Springfield showed these "modal tunings" to Stephen Stills and likely Neil young while they were all together. Stills used an E modal tuning in a lot of CSN songs, Neil may have experimented with this one and came away with these songs.
My wife and I saw him at Saratoga Springs around 20 years ago. He did a rock concert he supposedly wrote called "Greenville". Absoulutely the worst concert I ever saw! Total rip off, crowd actually was booing them before show was over! Never played their old classics like this one!
His Trump Derangedment Everyone i know stopped listening to him, and I loved his songs and now I can't listen to him anymore 😔 The guys a A-HOLE for doing that to his fans.
JUST so long as we do not have to hear Neil Young torture his guitar. A self-proclaimed genius yet Neil cannot play a lead to save his life. Disgusting, yet apropos.
Great choice..... I learned this song when it first was released.... I'm that old
Me too!
I bought the sheet music…
I’m with ya buddy.
Saw Neil and Crazy Horse in May. A stellar rock and roll show. I was stunned by Neil's energy and passion at 77 years old. Amazing.
Neil Young took drop D tuning and made a hall of fame songwriting career out of it. I've been playing this song for a few yeas but I still stop to watch your video so I can REALLY know how to play it! Love all the little details you added.
Another fantastic, in depth lesson.
Great to see Danny get some due.
Come on. Let's get him over 100,000 subscribers. Best instruction on TH-cam.
Thank you, and yes, tell your friends! 😀
An all time rocker! Great lesson, as always.
It’s amazing how many of my favorite tunes from back in the day were performed with alternate tunings. Thank you for decoding this one!
This is an awesome lesson! I never learned such a cool song so quickly! Thank you.
1869 I was playing ❤ today I'm learning how it's really played, I'm a simpleton comp
Love your videos and tutorials.
Glad you like them!
Man that verse! Love that part. Great to hear it front and center. That little Bogen sounds beautiful too.
There are many good tutorials on this song but this one is the best I've seen. Outstanding!
Thank you!
Great job! I forgot that this one was on my bucket list. Not anymore. Thanks 🙏 😊
Good concise lessons, with out that looooong drawn-out exp.'s
😅 that take forever. Appreciate thanx.
You always get the authentic sounds. I love that. Such beautiful sounds here!

Love the 2 guitar part breakdown. Request for next one that features great 2 guitar parts: Sway
Was 11 yrs old when I came across this song around 1971... got hooked on his guitar playing ever since. Learned double D dropped tuning from his catalog of songs.
Got hooked on Cinnamon Girl immediately at age 12 when it was released, and will go to my grave loving this song.
uh, i was going to write something similar. like mississippi queen. hear it once and its an automatic fav.
This is the first song that I worked out all the parts to, and recorded on my old 4-track by myself. 2 guitars, bass, 2 voices and an old Alesis drum machine for the drum track. Great song from a legend...nicely done!
Happy and excited to see the Bogen busting out the tunes....so cool, thanks for posting.
I learned this by ear and play it almost identically except for a few fills you just showed me.
Yet.... ,another of my Favs....!!! Thanks!!
NAILED the outro
Another good one Doug . You ROCK ! from Les's hometown.
Great lesson. Subscribed 🤘
One of my favourite songs, can you maybe look at Powderfinger sometime?

Saw him in Forest Hills - amazing show- tickets in the 100-150 range. Best show I’ve seen in a while.

Best one note solo ever.
Great stuff ❤
Totally correct and well taught, can't ask for any more than that.
Awesome tutorial! Your pacing and explanations are perfect. Thanks so much. 🤗
I love this song. Doug, so many of your lessons are the classics I enjoy the most. You should do another Neil Young double drop D classic "Ohio".
Yes
8:55 Damn! I wasn’t even close! Thanks for pointing me straight! So cool! 😊
Luv this song you do excellent job explaining how to play it sounds exactly how it's played great lesson keep them coming thank you 🎸👍😁

Oh, the joys of multiculturalism, how did we ever manage without it!

Gezzz.
Spot on man! How about the Loner? in Drop D?
I play this with all 2 finger notes learned it in the 70s from a song book
Can you do a lesson on how to play the top gun theme song
I used to have a guitar book of Decade where the turn around on Cinnamon Girl is given as a slide down and up rather than a jump. I wonder now what is correct.
