    It's important to note an LMS is composed of two components: 1. the authoring tool used to create SCORM, xAPI, cmi5 packages, and 2. the learning management tool. Authoring tools are typically installed on servers for multiple licensing or pc's for single licensing and compatible with Apple OS or Windows OS depending on the user preference. Contrastingly, learning management tools are typically cloud based so they are OS agnostic and allow SCORM, xAPI, cmi5 packages to be imported into them so instructors can manage enrollment, student scores, and feedback. Devin uses Articulate 360 (desktop pc software) to create a course and publish it as a SCORM package so that he can import it to Talent LMS (cloud based software). Many non-LMS users who are not familiar with these tools, often don't know this. For example, Easygenerator is actually a cloud based LMS authoring and learner management tool unlike Articulate 360 an other authoring tools which are OS dependent. The drawback of using Easygenerator LMS is you cannot actually import any SCORM, xAPI, cmi5 packages into it, rather you must use it's authoring tool to create SCORM packages and then you can export them out as SCORM packages which makes it much more like an authoring tool than a true cloud based LMS. I hope this helps

    Great video, just a quick note because I see it in so many informational videos. An actual definition of LMS at the beginning would be great. It's just that we started with some examples of LMS and that "it's exactly what it sounds like." And personally, it didn't seem as obvious of a definition as implied. Great video! I just found myself stopping the video, looking for a real definition of LMS, and then coming back. Same with scorm and xapi. Even a reference to another video would be nice.

    Hey Devlin, thank you so much for all the help. I was wondering if I could get some quick advice. What LMS do you think is best and that you like the most? I have to choose an LMS for a fast growing company for their internal training. I will be the first ID they have ever hired, so preferably something that is user friendly. I would also like the LMS to handle the growth of the company and track xapi. Most importantly, something that is compatible with everything. Sorry if this is long. I just wanted to give you an idea of where I am at with this.

    Hi Devlin,
    Thank you for the video, it's very useful as always!
    Which LMS would you recommend using with some data tracking features?
    I am looking for something that can communicate with Storyline files: show quiz results, submitted answers, possibly text entry field, and interactions like clicking on an object.
    Would you do / keep track of these via a LRS or LMS? Is there an LMS which can collect all this data or would it need to go through an LRS?
    Thank you!

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zsolt! I don't know of an LMS that can track all of that with SCORM...you will need xAPI for some of the more specific stuff (like question responses, open text responses, etc.)

    I'm a bit confused with scorm vs xapi. You mention that xApi doesn't work well with an LMS. Why do I need the LMS? Can't I just send the xApi request to an LRS? What does the LMS have to do with this? Isn't SCORM vs xApi the standards of communication between different programs. So if I can embed a Storyline project into Canvas LMS.... does it matter if canvas doesn't support Api as long as I can send them out (if I don't care about canvas storing data)? Should it matter?

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got it! You do not need an LMS to send custom xAPI statements. However, some LMSs are xAPI-compliant and will host the default-published xAPI packages from popular authoring tools. This gives you less control over the data that gets sent, but it's enough for some teams (the data is very similar to that which you can already get from SCORM). Check out cmi5 as well...this is how xAPI will replace the LMS to eLearning module communication.

    • @tal32123
      @tal32123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DevlinPeckYT How will cmi5 replace lms to elearning communication? I checked it out, seemed like it was just an addition of must use verbs and thats about it? But this whole thing is confusing so thanks for taking the time to help everyone and make videos!!! From my understanding xapi is a standard of communication.... but its also a package that an LMS can host (or not) depending on if they choose to support it. If they don't, I can host the exported xapi package from articulate rise in an within an LTI? Is there a preferred or better method?

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tal32123 Yes, xAPI is a standard of communication. When you publish an xAPI package from an authoring tool, it uses that standard of communication so that it works with LMSs that accept xAPI packages.
      One of the reasons for xAPI's slow uptake is because it's so flexible...so people are sticking with SCORM. cmi5 standardizes all of the communication that's happening with SCORM, but it does it with xAPI and comes along with many quality of life improvements.
      Hope that helps a bit :)

      @@DevlinPeckYT Thanks for all this, Devlin. I have a question. Do you know if Canvas is planning to have real xAPI or cmi5? I'm NOT an ID--just a professor who does his own ID. Our college institutionally uses Canvas for all classes, and the instructors use the built-in tools of Canvas to put their courses online. So we have to do EVERYthing in Canvas. I think I'm the ONLY one (among hundreds of instructors) using an authoring tool, and putting SCORM packages into my courses. But that just reports a numerical grade and completion. You hinted in this video that the LMSs are not up-to-date on xAPI--but do we know if they are actually planning to get there? (It seems like they are content with regular SCORM, and even then, few are actually using it.)

  • @whatcausethswevenes

    When using an elearning tool, is it better to create SCORM packages unit-by-unit or for the whole course?

    • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. There's no right answer to this, but I would suggest trying to manage package size and make it short enough that someone can complete in one sitting (depending on how much time they have available in their context)

    I understand Talent LMS from the administrator side, but I am not understanding Talent LMS from the user experience side. I enrolled myself into a course that I created using a different email address. What happens on the user's end? Do they receive a link to the course sent to their email? Btw, that´s a cool feature, having a pop-up window while you can add some animations in the background... In general I´m wondering how much customization is possible in terms of interface design with talentLMS. The dashboard is kinda too simple, not that bad but would be nice to be able to customize it a bit. Is there a way to do some minimal back end development, or it´s all fixed? • @DevlinPeckYT
      @DevlinPeckYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Shira, of course! The default tracking is that the course will be marked as complete once every single slide in the course has been viewed. If you have a course that is not linear (for example, there are two possible branches based on the choice that a user makes), then nobody will wind up viewing every single slide in the course (since they will only go down one of the branches).
      For that reason, we went with an alternate approach (using "Complete course" triggers so manually tell the LMS that the course is complete).
