It's from a book series by Terry Pratchett, which sadly I've never read, but when I came across this quote, I loved it.

To be fair, you never really see the people who decide not to be his enemies after all. Occasionally a glimpse (eg, the Gallifreyan soldiers who won't fight him), but they're never really front and center.

A good man doesn't need rules. The Family of Blood found out why he has so many.
I'm pretty sure that the Doctor has a rule for when he breaks out. Probably something like "if things ended this way, never show any emotion. They must know, they must be sure that the consequences of their actions caused that. They must feel regret... and for that, i must feel nothing at all".

It's also lovely house it immediately follows one of his playful, almost silly, performances. The whole while he was playing fun, we now know The Doctor was furious and just hiding it. Which means he might /always/ be angry and simply keeping it back for when it's needed...

Okay, but I never liked that scene. The Doctor wouldn't use the genocide of his people to get one over in a vocal bitch slap. This is the example I always use when I want to demonstrate to people that it's easy to make people not care if something a character is saying is in character or not. If it's badass-quotable enough people are gonna ignore that and just like it anyway. Kinda sad, to be honest.
@@monkeysaru3957 The doctor didn't have a look of pride or anger when he said that. He kind of reminded me of that creepy Oppenheimer interview.
It's like he was reminded of what he did, and he wasn't bragging, he just let the other guy know who he's dealing with. 1. That he is also capable of such a feat 2. That despite his pacifism, he is willing to go to extreme lengths when stakes are high enough.
He didn't have that "Basically... Run" smirk on his face, or the look of anger he had when talking to Daleks "you're my enemy" or that look of righteousness nine had when bragging about Dalek genocide.

Gart Shwey come to think about it, the 5 doctor's scene when that guy want immortal life, he is encased in a coffin as a statue, long life but unable to do anything, quite similar.
Although that was Rassilon's 'reward' for those who reached his tomb and took his ring.
Then, in 'Mawdryn Undead', there were aliens punished with an eternity of imperfect regenerations who just wanted to die.
People who WANT and actively SEEK immortality don't do well at all on this show.
I love how he was only concerned if the doctor would forgive his sister. He knows that she's the most innocent and the only one to deserve forgiveness
in all honesty that would make the Dr. less likely to forgive her she was innocent yet was still corrupted just like him 1 - 8 would have never done something like this but the war dr to number 12 all have this edge of darkness that the companions have to pull them back from sometimes she wouldn't have this her drive to free her family and get revenge would drive her so hed leave her trapped rather then risk what she would become

@@kennethlarocque2605okay, to be completely fair, these guys have the lifespans of small insects like a mayfly or a fairyfly. That's why they were after The Doctor's lives in the first place. So without trying to get the lives of a Time Lord, the girl might've literally died the next day.
The fact that the Doctor can do all this without a single act of violence or muttering a word yet say everything, just goes to show how dangerous he can actually be.
As we can see when there o limits to his fury.. he could just do anything hz wants because.. hes the doctor
Can death be beautiful? A line said many times about many dark subjects people prefer not to dwell on. But a subject some have to deal with.

Oh Yes especially the men that most of the time don't go to anger, because if one time one poor soul push them too far... . I am one of this sort of men. I have never been pushed so far... but, I feel in me, this small part of savagery, cruelty, hate, anger and violence, this "Mr Hyde" in me, sadistic, loving making suffer. I don't like him, perhpas I fear him, I fear this part of me, and I hope that never meet a situation permiting this part of me going outside, because I am not sure to be able to put the devil in the bottle again after. I perfectly understand the fiction character David Banner on the TV show "The Indredible Hulk" : don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I am angry.

Love how we spend almost the entire 90 minute runntime with the family portrayed as these terrifying almost unbeatable villians who even the doctors runs and hides from only to have them all dispatched mercilessly in a few sentences at the end.
It makes the whole story feel pointless. It's only purpose was to illustrate the use of the watch, which we later saw with the master. Because the Doctor running away from the family, arriving at a place inhabited by humans, and putting those people's lives at risk for the sake of taking the moral high ground is just stupid IMO. He wasn't being kind, but careless. It's like Nurse Redfrern said “If the doctor had never chosen this place on a whim, would anyone here have died?”.
Doesn't make the story pointless at all, the idea is that the Doctor could have easily defeated them at any time, but at an enormous cost to his own core values. It's why audiences love him but comes with its own drawbacks, such as the innocent people who died because the Family weren't dealt with sooner.
The Doctor wanted to give them the easy way out of dying naturally so he wouldn't have to stop them
He knew what he would do to them and ultimately they forced him to do his worst

Even when the Doctor deals judgment, his hearts still go out to the kid.
Why would the doctor feel for her? From what I understand she is an alien gas that killed the little girl and is wearing her corpse. She also killed many other people during her families quest for immortality.
I saw this new epilogue, and it made me slightly worried about Paul Cornell.
The lesson here seem to be that it's ok to violate a small child in the most complete way possible, where her skin around like an 80s slasher monster, and then be complicit in a hand full of innocent deaths
...so long as you Appear to be a little girl.

Also, this in no way condones daughter of mine's actions. Hence why she has been trapped in the mirror world for God knows how long. Human beings have done worse actions and have gone to jail for less time.
This ending was actually quite dark and morbid.

I used to wonder how a relative handful of strange-talking, eccentric folks living on a chilly-but-green little archipelago off the NW coast of Europe could have managed, in their day, to conquer or control some 40% of the Earth's landmass, containing many hundreds of millions of their fellow human beings -- and for many decades. I no longer wonder, when THIS runs in David Tennant's blood.
In my opinion, this is the best sort of character. Someone who normally seems so harmless, jovial even, but when pushed to far, the gloves come off, the smile disappears and the thing that makes Gods and Demons flee comes to the surface

Reminds me of the guy from Bleach forgot his name but he's got long blonde hair. He's very chill but he was also like the head warden of a really fucked up prison iirc and knows how to do dark magic

He ran from them, that was the Family's only chance of living a normal life. When they decided to hunt him, they lost that chance
Yeah peoplw tend to forget. Ten is an incarnation with a still very vivid memory of the time war. You can really feel in the RTD era what hell this has been and what kinf of unimaginable atrocities the doctor had to witness and sometimes even perform.
We get of course some power plays for the doctor in classic but everything pales to the things he has done in the lore.
The line
"He was being kind." When talking about the doctor running away really reminds me of later on with 11. When Victorian Clara is doing the one word test and uses the word kindness for why she thinks the doctor will help her.
The doctor is kind. And that kindness has gotten him hurt many many times, and sometimes he has to stop being kind.
But in the end, his kindness is what makes him The Doctor.

In A Town Called Mercy, the Doctor feels like everyone always dies because of his mercy. But he still chooses mercy, because even if it doesn't always work, it's still worth a shot.

Thats why the time war is so great. He abandoned his usual self and usual morals and justified it because it was a just war for survival.
But that changed him and scarred him so he will always carry a darker side that no companion will ever understand and truly makes him alone. Even if the time lords survived none of them experienced what he did.

John Smith was a good man.
The Doctor had a chance to live, and grow old, and die, and finally make an end of it, all as a good man, and The Family of Blood took it away from him.
That, was their mistake.
Two things, that "good men dont need rules, today is not the day to find out why I have so many" is how someone described me, also the family of blood wanted the doctors immortality by removing John smiths mortality, so they deserved it.
There is another from that same episode, "Demons run when a good man goes to war." They run not cuz of his power but because when a good man is pushed so far that he'll go to war, he won't stop and he won't have remorse.
Another saying that is accurate but not from doctor who is "never mistake one's silence for weakness"

This scene, right here, this is why I loved David Tennant's version of the doctor.
He was happy, bubbly, often one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet!
.....but if you toy with him, if you try to harm him or his friends? He will destroy you in the most brilliant way possible.

In my opinion, Harry Lloyd is an extremely underrated actor and performs phenomenally in every role he’s given.
Oh yeah, he was brilliant in this. Really uncanny.

Everyone's going on about David Tennant (rightly), but some appreciation is deserved for the protagonist of the Family of Blood, it's _his narration_ that makes this scene - and it really is a good summation of the Doctor, his trickery, power and capacity for Vengeance … thus one of Tens favourite threats "you get one warning - that was it" (along with "I used to be so full of mercy"). The whole story arc could be based on that trait.
[And as shown in the Pandoricum; The Doctor is a trickster God, the most feared and deadly warrior ever] …
He made a good villain for the Doctor to play off against, and that's what makes the best Dr Who episodes. They only appeared once but The Family of Blood are iconic, and that's partially due to the performances of The Family (the entire casting for the two parter was excellent, but imagine it with some meh actors).
This character is played by Harry Lloyd I believe (fun fact: he's a relative to Dickens), quite a fine actor too. See his performance in Counterpart series for example...

No, but what really gets me sad about this scene is that he visits his sister "Once a year, every year". And if she is in "Every mirror" That means that the doctor only looks at a mirror once a year. Further proof that he hates himself so much that he can't stand to look at his own reflection.

He wasn't running from the Family because he was scared about what they'd do to him... he was scared of what HE would do to THEM.
One could make the same statement about the doctor running from the time lords. He reluctantly went to fight in the time war. Then once he remembered the events from the day of the doctor he was happy and his soul was free and pure......
Then the time lords out of fear tried to manipulate the doctor and in so he lost Clara.
The result once he got back to galifray "to the city. Find somebody important. Tell them I'm back. Tell them, I know what they did, and I'm on my way. And if they ask you who I am, tell them I came the long way round."
Then finally "get off my planet "
Reminds me of something Chief O'Brien said on Deep Space 9. He was talking to a Cardassian soldier about the war between them years back, and the Cardassian asks, "Why do you hate us?"
O'Brien says something like, "I don't hate you. I hate what you made me become during that war."

@@rorieb20 Capaldi's Doctor took a long time to win me over. In series 8, he pissed me off to a point where I probably would have quit the show if I didn't care so much about Clara. I was willing to put up with him for her sake but it wasn't until Season 9 that I started softening towards Capaldi. In Hell Bent, I finally admitted to myself that the man had earned his place as the Doctor.

I always thought this was out of character for Ten, turns out this story was originally written for the Seventh Doctor, which makes a lot more sense. Either way, it's still a chilling depiction of the Doctor's fury, regardless of the incarnation

@@sub-zero5433 thing is the seventh has two personas the goofy one and his real one, tho it now makes sense that the story came from the seventh, certain scenes play out in a way you see the tenth wouldn’t react, the more text book example is him faking being John smith that’s the seventh in a nutshell, a fool in disguise

Tenant was the absolute master of cold Time Lord fury.
Eccleston could be severe and have moments of explosion, Smith pulls off outright anger and joyful menace perfectly, but as far as soul-chilling cold fury goes, Tenant is the man.

and smith was also a perfect choice for the doctor....he seemed to have a sort of natural weirdness to him...
took me a while to adapt to capaldi(and i guess a bit of time for him to adapt to the character) but eventually he got there, he's the doctor :)

+Morbius Fitzgerald Absolutely agree. I also consider this Tennant's best story (just narrowly beating Midnight for me) but the ending is far more suited to McCoy's portrayal. I'd not read the book when I saw the episodes, though I knew it was based on one (and that it was a Seven story). As much as I like the story and feel that Tennant fits better with the idea of "Doctor lives a normal life", McCoy fits the "cosmic justice" parts better.

I like that he never looks like he takes pleasure in what hes doing. He looks mad that he has to condemn these people to their fates.

What makes this even scarier? It's not the fact that The Doctor has the power to do this.

The fact that you have to push him this far for him to have no remorse.

@@robertJ14 No, there are other reasons. I don't hate it personally but I'm not overly fond of it outside of this scene because I find the story mostly tedious to sit through, as John Smith is a character that just does not resonate at all for me. Which is ironic since I love Ten himself.
Its fine if you do like John Smith and the other characters, its not like its hard to see why certain people consider it a masterpiece, just isn't an enjoyable masterpiece for some people due to it being too boring.

One thing I loved about Ten is that for as funny and goofy as he could be at times, there was a darkness to him behind the facade. He really felt like a man who lived through the worst the universe had to offer and come out the other side. And this episode perfectly captures what that did to him.

This is my favorite episode from David Tennant it showed the passionate side and the furious side of the doctor.
In the episode where the doctor first meets River Song, he tells the creatures there to access him in the libraries data base and they instantly recoil in fear and retreat. I think this ending is a glimpse to what they found. We almost never see the doctor be truly scary and that's why this is one of my favorite.
The Doctor goes back and forth thinking he's always the good guy of the story, but also knowing he has a reputation for winning battles. It comes off as a little strange to me how often he forgets this and acts surprised when someone might wage a war against him perceiving him to be a threat.
That's why the Panadorica and River Song story lines were great. To the people of the forest doctor means mighty warrior
Also in the episode where Missy is about to be executed, he gets them to look him up in the “Fatality Index” under “Cause of death”.

I've just realised something: what if the cruel punishments were personal? What if it was not the Doctor, but the last bit of John Smith taking his fury out on the people who prevented him from living his life?

I think it's very personal, but it's also all the Doctor. John Smith was a good man, he would have lived and died a good man. If he had to, he would have killed The Family to stop them, but he wouldn't have been cruel about it.
Now, the Doctor, the Doctor is not a good man, not at heart. He struggles to be, he forces himself to act like one, he binds himself up in rules and grasps desperately at the humanity of his companions, trying to prevent himself from becoming what he knows he could be... The Time Lord Victorious, The Vengeful God, The Oncoming Storm.

I still believe David Tenant is the best Doctor. He pulls the role off so incredibly well. His charisma, the blank stare he gives in times of distress and the way he showed unfathomable anger with just a look. No words, simply a stare. Truly a fantastic actor and easily my favorite to take on the role
They never really explain how the doctor got things like chains forged in a dwarf star, or trapped someone in every mirror. Which implies to me that this was no special expenditure of effort on his part.
Taking care of them was basically the equivalent of squashing a bug to the doctor.
Leave it to the Doctor to give the bad guys precisely what they wanted all along... and still make it one of the worst punishments in the history of the show.

One thing I've noticed about the 10th doctor above all other doctors: He's actually extremely cold.
This scene always simultaneously makes me laugh at how intense it is out of nowhere and also gives me genuine chills. It's the perfect microcosm of Doctor Who. Silly at how self-serious such a cheesy show can get but also so full of heart
I didn’t fully appreciate this scene until recently, because the bit about trapping the sister in the mirror always took me out of it and gave me very “spooky stories children tell each other at sleepovers” vibes (any time you see something in the corner of your eye” or whatever), but I’ve since moved past that and see this scene for what it is. Love it more now than I ever have!

I liked Tennant the most, because he portrayed the doctor as a cheerful enthusiastic man, but in the events of stress or extreme danger he showed his military background, cold logical thinking and and cunning perhaps even sadistic undertone in his actions towards his enemies. He portrayed him as good man with maybe not that good of a past.
I wouldn't say he's sadistic, sadism implies feeling pleasure at people's suffering, for him to be sadistic he would have to care. Ten seems more dead inside than anything, like he's gotten angry one too many times and now he's just done with everyone's bullshit. He doesn't care enough to be angry, he can't feel anything anymore because he's over it. And honestly, I think his revenge served cold is far more terrifying than if his revenge were served hot.

Also I think the Master seems like a character who is what the Doctor could very well be if he went down a darker path. There's also been episodes with Daleks where it was brought up that his hatred of them made him more like them. There was an episode with the 9th Doctor where a Dalek said "You would make a good Dalek" also in the episode Into the Dalek there was a Dalek who said "I am not a good Dalek. You are a good Dalek". Also in the Waters of Mars there was a thing on him trying to change an event in time saving a woman who's granddaughter would be important in the future due to what happened. She said to him "if my family changes the whole of history could change. The future of the human race. No one should have that much power" And his response to this was simply "Tough."
The family of blood wanted immortality, so the doctor gave it to them and at the same time he made them suffer for their actions

Second: If you know your target has battled god and monsters and won, do the smart thing RUN AWAY.
As the son said, "we wanted to live forever, so the doctor made so we did." Personally having immortality is a horrific situation, because you are watching your friends and family die, the doctor knows this, this properly why when this family wanted it, he gave it to them, but at a price.

That's why a good person can be truly frightening when pushed to the limit. A cruel person is someone you can always count on to be cruel, but with a good person, you have no idea what they'll do, or what they're capable of.
What made David tennants performance the best, is because he was capable of getting across all the characteristics of the doctor, but the one thing that most doctors were never able to get across about the time lord, is just how terrifying the doctor is! And this is a prime example of just how horrifying the doctor can be.
I'm thinking back to Classic Doctor Who to when the Time Lords were first introduced, and boy were they intimidating. Now watching this, this has the exact same intimidation. Fear the Time Lords, even it is just one of them, because they are scary when they mean business.

Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi is good at being terrifying. Especially Peter Capaldi. I LOVED him in The Musketeers. I never liked Steven Moffet's Doctor Who because it's too dark. When I was little, it freaked me out to learn all the previous Time-Lords that tried to get immortality, were still alive and sealed in stone!
I loved this part. It was so well done and it really showed who the doctor is. He's not just a funny alien that has adventures, he is powerful and justice driven. He has very strong morals, he is serious under his layers of adorable and funny. The doctor is such a wonderfully complex character.

IKEA MEATBALLS This is very True. As someone who is cold tempered, when I get angry, it’s like a reaching for hot coals, and feeling the burning sensation for a while after.
A fury is worse than a temper. Tempers can cool, tempers are sudden and reactable through the fact that it's a reaction and not a plan. Fury is thought through, a furious person knows what they're doing and now they're angry enough to do it.
i'm like that, im actually horrified of myself when i get angry, which i usually get every decade or so, it's almost like an out of body experience, fortunenately i haven't killed someone yet.

It's as if they knew that the entity staring at the man I attacked in anger as well as staring at them was not the same person they knew and was something malevolent with the intent to kill.

Honestly this was just trying to be dark and edgy. Its so out of character especially for the Tenth Doctor. It was unnecessary cruelty rather than something that needed to be done. If they wanted to go this route then they needed to make it the only way or actually have the villains do something truly horrific. These villains did very little damage in comparison to ones that the Doctor has shown mercy for.
This was the episode that let us know just how dangerous the Doctor could truly be when his hand is forced.
The Family wanted to live forever, the Doctor granted their wish....
You don't want to mess with someone who can casually control all of time and space. He doesn't do it often. When he does it frightens even him. For what he knows he will become (the Valeyard. The Dream Master. The Oncoming Storm). But... demons run....

When that particular property was first revealed though, they immediately threw it out the window (he was tied to a chair in FBI custody while they built it around him and his cloaked TARDIS and he was able to get out and back into the cell via TARDIS travel at least twice) and then later stuck to it (next incarnation couldn't land under the Tower of London because the basement, known as the Black Archive, had been lined with the substance as bricks and the TARDIS refused to land - I guess the coordinates registered as nonexistent or something like that).
