      I think your analysis is sound. I also agree that we need more data regarding incidence of certain injuries across bare knuckle vs padded since conventional wisdom is that incidence of brain injury is lower in bare knuckle. You simple cannot throw repeated, full power punches to someone's head without high risk of destroying your hand (no padding), so concussions and such should be less common.

    A common misconception is that gloves are designed to protect opponents, but they are actually designed to limit broken hands & cuts to knuckles from teeth. Thornton died from an awkward fall, not increased damage from lack of gloves. The true cause of this is unfortunate incident is from horrific match making, same thing happened in boxing with former UFC fighter Tim Hague. You cannot put guys with losing records/multiple KO losses within a 12 month period in there with a undefeated fighter. The commissions who sanction these bouts should be held accountable.

      When a baseball flies at a person standing near by, or even at a player, and hits him in the head, causing traumatic damage (which has happened), it is an UN-intentional event, ONE of the dangers of being around a sport where hard, fast ball is played.
      But when you punch or kick another MMA person in the head or face or body, and knock them unconscious, it is ONE of the most ideal outcomes.

    A point I’d bring up is that Thorntons injury is practically unavoidable even in a sport with head protection. If an NFL athlete fell in this manner, the damage to the spine and nervous system would still occur with a helmet, since a helmet is designed to take oncoming pressure from a direction, and not for absorbing the pressure of ones own body falling onto itself like we see here. This is one of those injuries that is literally unavoidable, you can only hope it just won’t happen. Truly a saddening incident.

  • @fromulus

    At the start of seeing this I was going to say, looks like this could happen in any sport that allows for a punch to be thrown in this manner, padded or not. CTE studies suggest that padding like in football actually gives people a false sense of security and can be just as dangerous. Another thing to keep in mind that gloves in MMA are typically meant to protect the hands not the face. Bareknuckle is less padding but acting like this is any less safe is foolish, especially when we’re talking about a 38 year old Thorton who was was 6-18 with 11 KOs against him. "A knockout and fall could happen like this in hockey", players are not getting punched in the head every few seconds. In fact getting hit in the head in ball sports is a rare event let alone being knocked out. That aside, the crucial difference with full contact fighting is that the fighters are actively trying to hurt each other. It is conceivable that something like this could happen in the UFC although it hasnt in the last 25 years, but it has happened in regular boxing (not precisely the same causes) although relatively rarely given the number of years the sport has been running and how many fights there have been. It only took 3 years of BKFC for a death to occur. You would have to fight maybe 9-10 rounds in UFC to get the kind of facial injuries you see from a normal fight in BKFC. The fact that in BKF fists arent padded significantly increases the head jerk which in turn has consequences for the brain and neck. Trying equate BKFC to other other sports in terms of the risks sounds an awful lot like apologetics rather than an honest or genuine analysis.

  • @well_as_an_expert_id_say
    @well_as_an_expert_id_say 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Well, boxing is statistically one of the most dangerous sports, but being bareknuckle does anecdotally make it "safer" in that you can't hit as hard bare knuckle, it's just the knuckles twist skin so much that you get alot of cuts and tears. There's absolutely no evidence that it's safer, but seems to be a very common theme that they don't punch quite as hard

    • @krazy-kavman59

      I agree with you.
      Bare knuckle boxing might be safer.
      Yes, you can't go as wild with punches as extremely easy to break your metacarpal bones in your hand via connecting with the forehead.
      Also, I'd imagine (though I don't know) that bare knuckle fights would end sooner via the opening up of cuts and facial wounds that may stop the fight sooner.
      Ironically padding would stop the cuts forming but still allow damage to the brain.
      I think the cost/benefit analysis with bareknuckle is bareknuckle is more facial scaring and more damage broken bones to the hand but probably overall healthier to the brain compared to regular boxing.

      @@krazy-kavman59 I beg to differ. I believe the extra layer of padding in the boxing glove infact adds an extra layer of G-force that a bare knuckle punch simply wouldn't have, as the boxer now has to punch ferther+harder to reach his target with a glove on, and may not even feel that he hit that hard once his strike lands due to the padding also.

    Ultimately one has to outweigh the risks of an activity with how much a person enjoys it. People get outraged when someone dies of injuries whether it's bare knuckle combat or base jumping off a bridge. The important thing to know is that athletes do what they do because they love it. There's literally no other reason why they would do it.

When exposed to a blast or some other trauma the same test is supposed to be done after the exposure. In the early days of our recent wars a baseline was never really established, i noticed being slower after an incident but not having the baseline it was always my word against the military. I was a combat medic for 21 years and am glad we started tracking the unseen injuries to help protect our brothers and sisters, I could 100% see this happening in sports if it isn't already.
