  • When fishing for bass you need a few different rod and reel setups to fish different lures - chatterbaits, spinnerbait, Texas Rig, drop shot, ned rig.... In this video I show you the only 3 rod and reel setups you need to catch bass from fishing on a boat to bank fishing and pond fishing.

    Could listen to you talk gear and tackle all day. You make sure to hit the key points! 🤙
    My top 3:
    1. A 7 foot Medium rod with straight 20 or 30 lb braid for my lighter stuff. Allows me to throw weightless, or weighted.
    2. A 7 2 MH rod with min 15 lb straight fluro for smaller swimbaits, jigs, texas rigs, etc.
    3. A min 7 3 Heavy rod with straight 50+ braid for heavy pad cover, and heavier/larger swimbaits for open water.

    Down here in Florida when I go on someone else’s boat I try to only bring 4 rods, med, med heavy, heavy and a punching outfit. I have 3 spinning outfits but they stay on my boat and usually only come out when I’m taking someone fishing who can’t use a bait caster but still wants to use lures vs shiner fish. The med had 15# mono and the others are40#, 50# and 65# braid. Here at Headwaters braid is important most of the time ...

    I carry 4 rods, a 7' medium power spinning rod, a 7' medium power bait caster, a 7' medium heavy power rod and a 7'6" heavy power rod for punching. In the lakes I fish, I find I catch most fish on my spinning rod, followed up by medium bait caster. I make my own soft plastics and started punching with a very similar bait to the Gambler BB Cricket and it was a blast this summer! That 7'6" inch rod I bought after watching Mikey's punching videos and his Scum Frog video with JT. I clean up this year on that Scum Frog!

    May I suggest one small tweak to your spinning rod setup......Try a med/hvy extra fast tip. 7-7.2. This will open up a world of possiblitys of throwing smaller baits along with what your already throwing..
    It works for me.
    Just a suggestion.

    I try to minimize all the time
    I'm a non boater and some guys freak when I have 8 rods for the back of the boat
    But its hard to have choices and be effective. Found 3 spinning combos and 5 bait cast combos cover a lot of choices but only catch my limit on 4 or 3 of the combos and some derby's only 1 combo all day
    But you have similar choices and eases my brain when thinking of minimizing and effectiveness
    Thanks for the confidence booster

    Mikey I honestly don't know what I would do with myself if not for you. I just added a rod to the arsenal a medium shimano rod with a slxdc reel. OMG how awesome is this set up. Than put new Stradic on Carbonlite 7'2 inch rod. Using that for smaller shakey heads and dropshots. Third is my Daiwa Tatula 150. I don't understand why this isn't the go to reel for just about everyone. The 100 mm handle makes a huge difference recovering baits quickly and powerfully. I put that on a new St. Croix Victory 7'3" mh rod and wowzer the king of the hill. Yikes this go to rod does so many things well that I stopped counting. Now I just added all that to my gear and you come out with this video and I look like a freakin Genius. Dude as far as I'm concerned theres the Father, Son and Mikey and Bogg. There you go my friend, thats how much I regard your advice. You are a Freakin Hammer Dude. HAMMER

    My three are Dobyns fury 7'3 Mag heavy (fishes in-between a heavy and med-heavy) with slx 8:1. I can use this rod for frogging, bigger top waters, jig, texas rig ect., Dobyns fury 7'2 medium heavy moderate action (fishes like a medium action rod) paired with okuma 6:8:1 great for everything from flukes, jerkbaits, crankbaits, top waters, spinnerbait, chatterbaits, little swim baits etc. The 3rd would be a dobyns fury 7' medium action spinning rod with a Daiwa 2500 spinning reel great for Neds, shakey head, neko rigs, small cranks, small jerkbaits, wacky rigs etc.

    Just bought a stx rod 6’10 medium rod and being 5’10 I find the 7’2 just a little long fishing from a kayak, basically the same set ups. Love your channel.
    Do you carry a few pre-spooled reels with you for greater variety and conditions water, bites and so on??

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the only one i might change line on is the spinning rod but in that case i'll just switch out the flourocarbon leader i have on it. on the bait casting setups 12 to 17lbs test will cover you in just about any situation for the most part.

  • @jholl7339
    @jholl7339 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only things I would change is: 1 - Switch down to a Medium Light Spinning reel (You already have a medium BC in your arsenal), and 2 - Add a Heavy BC combo with braid. Yeah, you can get away with much more, in open water, or around wood, but when the bass are holed up in the grass, you're gonna want that Heavy rod to get them out.

    it is really necessary rods 400$ or more for botom contact bait or it is not necessary. Is there a lot of difference in sensitivity between rod 200 and 400$? does it really make a difference or average price is enough. thanks from Portugal

      Yes, sometimes that inch or two makes a huge difference in the action of the rod. Is it necessary? No. But can it make a difference in fishability? Yes it can. It just allows you to be able to fine tune your setup a little bit more.
