    Stephen absolutely speaks to how I feel. I am 62 and feel so far out of my depth in the world that I live in. I don’t like or enjoy most of what happens in it any more I feel no connection to the way people act or speak. I realise how lucky I was to be bought up in a gentle kind family who looked after each other and others. We were working class, Dad was on very low wages, we had enough and were perfectly happy. I think we have to go back to looking after each other in families in communities and hope the ripples spread. Most other stuff is too big to fathom let alone sort out.😻🙏❤️

    In tears listening to Stephen speak with power and compassion to his tortured teenage self.
    Flooded back to my own broken hearted teenage-hood. Gay. Surrounded by brutality. Determined that somehow, somewhere, there was a place for me.
    And there was. My life has been filled with joy and pain and laughter and sorrow and above all, love. Glorious, endlessly complicated, magnificently simple love.

    As someone said to me once you can only control the controllables, that doesn't mean you can't be concerned or worried about other things, but if you are not in a position to be able to change them then it can be an awful waste of energy and breath. As my mother once said to me " save your breath, you might need it one day".

    I stopped watching you both and scrolled down during Stephen's reply to his young self to instantly write a reply. I'm still listening. frozen and in pause. Finally this beautiful memory having read. I can relate to everything and nothing he said. After all we are two different people. I will take away from this, and try the important exercise to write a letter. Too late to a future self but never too late to have a conversation with yourself. Thank you

    I believe Stephen Fry is right about the illusory nature of power. The analogy I prefer to use to explain goes like this: A Pope, a President, and a Soldier are alone in a room. "Kill the Pope, Soldier,' says the President. "Do it for your country." The Pope turns on the Soldier. "For the love of God kill the President." Which among these three have the power. The Soldier, or the man he listens to? It cannot be the Soldier because he acts upon the will of another, yet it also cannot be anyone else because it is on account of some ineffable thing, some vestige of instinct, intellect, loyalty, or integrity, which lies within the Soldier that ultimately compels him to act.
    Power does not exist. It is a way in which individuals absolve themselves of responsibility over their actions by attributing agency to some external factor or condition. In the final analysis each of us it ultimately alone and we are what we choose to be regardless of whether that choice is arrived at through indifference or determination.

    Thank you for the fascinating interview. With huge respect for Stephen Fry's erudition and admirable other talents, I'm surprised to find him so reductive. For example, how does he justify calling other human beings disgusting because they don't share his values? Isn't that like calling gays disgusting in an earlier era? The hoi poloi have always existed, as Mr. Fry knows, and they never took much heed of intellectual pursuits or cared for ruling elites. Until the internet opened a channel of expression for that class, they had no public voice. Now that they're screaming loud and proud, it must be moral and ethical to hear them out or, at least, refrain from denigrating them...? While it's the bottom of the Wheel of Fortune for Mr. Fry, it's the top of the wheel for the previously ignored lower classes. I completely understand him ignoring their voices but don't understand at all calling them ugly names.

    “It’s a strange paradox, that the liberals are illiberal in their demand for liberality. They are exclusive in their demand for inclusivity. They are homogenous in their demand for heterogeneity. They are somehow un-diverse in their call for diversity - you can be diverse, but not diverse in your opinions and in your language and in your behaviour. And that’s a terrible pity." Stephen Fry. I could never understand those who would bully or physically violent towards others because they are different but I also dislike intellectual snobbery. Stephen is an intelligent man and being an atheist why does he talk about the natural world being "cruel " . The universe just is and doesn't make judgements.

    • @kyoglesage
      @kyoglesage 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      He didn't ascribe 'judgement' to the universe. The universe contains many horrors, not the least of which is that the innocent suffer. That suffering is not the result of judgement or punishment as those who believe in a creator god may claim, but of a universe that is completely indifferent to cause and effect, good and bad.

    I, too, have become exhausted by the current state of things and desire to tune out from it all..... at least for a little while. It's not that I don't care about the world. In point of fact, my concern for humanity and the planet has never been greater! Rather, it's the realization of my vanishingly little power relative to the big scheme of things and the self-harm of letting forces beyond my control wear me down. There's no point in fretting and mulling about issues that one cannot change; it's better to step aside, take a deep breath, and come to terms with your own insignificance in the capricious and inexplicable cosmos!

    'Pastiche'. That is exactly how humans learn. From observing and copying others, we develop our perceptions and skills, and find their own style. Some people's own style can be flexible and evolve.
    Babies instinctively know what to copy, and try for themselves without copying, to develop. They copy speech, ,and eventually discover rolling to move themselves even if adults are not role modelling getting from A to B by rolling.
    I want to connect with that instinct, so I dan continue with the natural process of learning and evolving throughout my lifetime. It requires being wiilling to let go of some fix constructs that Ii use to organise an overwhelmingly vast sense of the whole of reality, and using other aspects of my perceived frameworks afoundational stability, or trellises to grow from,

      @@kingy002 As a grasper of history, I do hope you use that term carefully. Which of Elon Musk's political views do you see as aligning with fascism (I believe Musk was the target of Fry's "dreadful people" comment)? In any case, my point is that a wise person would be keenly interested in trying to understand why someone they instinctively dislike thinks the way they do, rather than simply throwing around careless pejoratives, or writing off half the population (or the entire population, per Fry's "infestation" comment).

    • @kingy002
      @kingy002 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EvanM_ I acknowledge that Fry used the comment referencing Musk. I don't believe Musk should be in the role that he has been given. When Trump was first in power the debt went up just over 7 trillion dollars. If they wish to drop it 2 trillion there are going to be a lot of jobs gone. It is some of Trump's other picks that I believe will be fascistic in their behavior.
      I believe that no good will come out of Trump's new rein in power. More so now that he controls the house as well. The vast mass of staff that worked under him last time used words like moron, and a complete idiot about his behaviour and attitudes to governing. And these people were strong committed Republicans.

    • @EvanM_
      @EvanM_ หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kingy002 That's fair enough, there's a lot to dislike about Trump and some of his appointments. I suppose my concern is that the word fascist tends to get thrown around as an insult, which can have the effect of inhibiting analysis of actual policy (regardless of whether a given policy does or doesn't bear any resemblance to any of the the various and contradictory elements of fascism). Better that specific policies are argued on their merits, as you do above. Your comments about debt and jobs may be right. I did hear Musk say he thinks public servants who lose their jobs should be given 2 years free salary and assistance transitioning to other roles or sectors, so it may be less drastic than that.

    Sadly we in the US, esp. the trans, gays, etc. won't have the luxury of sitting around sipping wine with our buds, but it's ours to try to fix, having fucked it up. But the Brits & Europeans have their own right-wing issues now.
    Oh, and I find I'm the same age as Stephen. No wonder his letter to his 15 yo self rang true, though my 15 yo self isn't to be envied in the least. No thanks!

    I enjoy Stephen Fry but i wish he would do some more digging on people like RFK, Trump and Rogan. I think he'd actually like Rogan
    Stop being so bloody snobbish.

    I've never really felt at odds with the delucious Mr Fry until his response to the forced pronouns was "Bless".
    I wanted to scream.
    I hope I've misread his intention.
    The pronoun issue is the merely tip of a horrendous iceberg that's deeply homophobic, lesbophobic and misogynistic and a clear and present danger to vulnerable and confused children.
    I *must* assume Stephen hasn't yet clearly understood this because to believe he is actually in sympathy with the 'iceberg' would be deeply troubling.

    Considering it’s a sit down interview why TF are you advertising mic stands ?
    Move them out of the way of your people, if you have any respect.

    Fry's disdain of Rogan demonstrates how we all become bigoted and judgemental as we get old. Does he realise the old greek philosophers wrestled?

      Rogan engages in post-truth populist narratives, and gives credit to certain people who should never be given such unrestrained influence.

    Josh Szeps is one of the reasons I stopped listening to ABC radio. He dismissed people like me, who don't want men competing in women's sports, or having access to women's spaces as 'conservatives'. Fugg off Josh.

    - problem is that with tech the world has started to move incredibly fast - either u move with it or stay behind - simply one’s choice - there’s no other way to talk or think - more clearly consider talking and thinking differently - fyi i can’t stand Trump - so do the math bout what i’m saying here - be well -
