Peter Helliar: The Craft of Comedy
How do you create great comedy? How do you build a successful creative career?
Peter Helliar is one of Australia's biggest stand-up comedians. He was on TV every night for eight years as a panellist on The Project. He had his own network sitcom, How to Stay Married. He's a rockstar of the Melbourne Comedy Festival. He was nominated for Australia's biggest TV award, a Gold Logie. Last year, he was a contestant on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! When we sat down with him recently, he was playing the narrator in a live production of The Rocky Horror Show.
This interview was recorded shortly after another comedian, Arj Barker, asked a breastfeeding mother to leave his Melbourne Comedy Festival show when the baby was making too much noise, sparking a cultural debate about discrimination against mums versus the craft of comedy. Peter is hugely insightful as a performer. Enjoy.

This is why, when in a virtual meeting, it's better to use a headset and microphone. Sometimes, if someone is talking, then you overlap by saying something on top, the output speaker will mute what is coming from the other person, therefore, you think it's only YOU talking, but in fact, the other person hadn't finished talking but you just can't hear them - creating much confusion and frustration.

Hi Josh. "I don''t want to have [my son] grow up in an environment that has been stripped of all stripped of all male conflict. I want him to get punched occasionally when he's a real little shit." As a thought experiment, would you want that also of your daughter? (As in, not be too "saftiest" and let her have some exposure to male violence, experience the "consequences of [her] behaviour", "get punched occasionally"?) Probably not - I certainly wouldn't - but I wonder why we often feel that way about boys? I enjoyed the interview (I listened to the full interview on podcast). Thank you again and I look forward, as always, to your next one.

The current claims, and yes also blames, being projected by these feminist institutions are not only baseless statistically, and in principle (and should be rejected on that basis alone); but MORE IMPORTANTLY, they should be rejected for the REASON that they are treating "male violence" like a collective action problem precipitating from the sky: they, given their feminist presumptions and silly axioms, conceptualize the CAUSE of the problem as a being a manifestation of "patriarchy". They don't understand the relationship between culture and politics, and the "problem" to whatever degree it most surely exist, is CULTURAL and EXISTENTIAL, it couldn't possibly be solve politically because politics is DOWNSTREAM of culture. Not to mention the obvious fallacy in their account of the issue as being a result of "patriarchal socialization"... you know, because, if the problem was a GENERAL condition of Australian culture, then the MAJORITY of men would BE VIOLENT; ALL MEN were "socialized" by the same Australian culture and yet the total number of men who commit any kind of violent crime are an extremely small proportion of the total male population, ergo, the "problem" CANNOT BE THE "PATRIARCHY". They literally believe that a man beats-up (and even kills) his wife because of "male privilege" and "power"... please, just let the toddlers scream so everyone else can decide GROW UP. Either that, or: they will only continue to waste INCREDIBLE AMOUNTS of YOUR money, remain a constant nuisance about resolving a problem that only exists in their fickle little heads, and, most importantly, they will continue to divert attention from THE ACTUAL PROBLEM while actively EXACERBATING it's spread for as long as they are allowed to by the people of Australia. I don't understand the perpetual apprehension to reject self-evident absurdities, let's stop pretending like the feminist sophistry has ANY legitimacy... because it doesn't, and bureaucrats are using it as a pretext to institutionalize your entire country. Don't allow them them blind you with their infantile sense of self victimization, THEY ARE WRONG and VERY, VERY STUPID. Instead of placating feminist hysteria, simply tell them to go read "Crime and Punishment" so they'll ACTUALLY know something about male violence for the first time in the history of their insipid ideological miasma. Reasonable people should not surrender to misanthropic ignoramuses with about as much psychological depth as a grain of sand. And for the love of GOD, spare yourself and everyone else that faithless tone of voice, stop pretending like we haven't inherited thousands of years of tradition of cultivated wisdom, you'd remember exactly how to raise a virtuous son if you decided to take the knock the brain tumor of feminism out of your head... STOP MAKING VIRTUE CONSPICUOUS TO ITSELF AS THOUGH IT EXISTED IN SPITE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN. Of course women and girls who have been misfortune enough to internalize the feminist narrative that they are both in CONSTANT DANGER, and also TOTALLY DEPENDENT upon some bureaucratic entity for their safety, will "be afraid walking in public"... how couldn't they not, when expectations define perception, and "BE AFRAID VICTIM" is literally the only coherent message feminism sends to women and girls? For the few who dare to reject the completely indolent and fantastical assertion that "men and boys need accept responsibility for their violence", in addition to the antipathy and futility of the request presumes to place upon "men and boys", I've yet to have heard the following, ironically quite misogynistic, fact pointed out to defenestrate this stupid idea: the "responsibility" that has been asserted to belong to the abstract collective of "men and boys" DOES NOT EXIST TO BE "TAKEN" ABSTRACTLY, that responsibility ONLY exists at the level of the individual; and to deny that which can only belong to oneself, to externalize the responsibility to make our own choices for ourselves (i.e. having a realistic sense of danger in public, or enough self-respect NOT to date a kangaroo-crack-head wearing a wife-beater, etc), is the most DEGRADED, DIS-EMPOWERING, CONDITION OF DEPENDENCY that anyone could ever be find themselves oppressed by. In other words, not only is feminism NOT empowering women and girls, IT IS DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE. 55:25 - Define "good home", you made that statement sound as if it was suppose to sound counter-intuitive, or somehow surprising? I assume you are defining "good" is the superficial financial sense of the word? If you meant that it's possible for a teenager to "throw everything away" and "choose a completely different set of values" despite having grown up in a house of abundance with parents who take matters of VALUE for granted, then sure, that doesn't really surprise me at all; the variable that is more likely to be relevant in such a case would seem to be HIS UPBRINGING. Considering what that probably means for most teenage boys, a trivial and prejudicial education in a culture saturated with contempt for them and their (apparently meaningless) future as men, isn't exactly shocking to imagine when you realize that they wouldn't be choosing a "different set of values" so much as choosing ANYTHING other than the platitudes, insults, and lectures you are MISTAKING for ACTUAL VALUES. Seriously though, this: "DONT BE ABUSIVE AND TOXIC AND VIOLENT AND EVIL AND BOYS", is NOT a VALUE. A VALUE is something that one incorporates through cultivation and meaningful life experience, instead of providing such opportunities to developing boys, we have decided that we'd rather steal their time and drug their minds in order to force them to focus on the latest "HOW NOT TO BE" lesson. Don't mistake mere words for actual lessons, read some Plato if you don't know the difference, every parent should aspire to the role of Socrates in relation to their kids. 1:01:21 - Boys are using "Andrew Tate" as a "screw you, we aren't defined by the assumptions you make in spite of us" card... frankly, I'm glad to see it. That is the least those responsible for imposing a political ideology upon students in public schools deserve. - Good Luck Australia!
