The home of Uncomfortable Conversations with Josh Szeps.
The world has never been more connected. Yet never more divided. We yell at each other from inside our echo chambers. But change doesn’t happen inside an echo chamber. It’s time to get out, to stretch our legs, to step on some land mines. It's time to have an uncomfortable conversation, with Josh Szeps.

"Escape the Echo Chamber" with Stephanie Lepp
What would it look like if we could escape the phony choice between strident positions and find a third way? Not a "compromise". Not a squishy midpoint betweren any two extremes. But a genuinely new way of looking at an issue, informed by the best of all sides? Instead of hunting for the worst in our opponents' positions, what if we could harness the best?
That's the mission of the journalist Stephanie Lepp, a producer whose new series of short videos, Faces of X, demonstrates what she's up to. She and Josh wrestle with partisanship, social media, both-sidesism, ideological capture, and how we all might think more freely in this toxic election cycle.

I’m here for Candace! ❤️
I don't understand how anyone takes her seriously. When she talks it's like I'm watching a bad actress and as far as her messaging and the subjects she chooses to talk about, it's just blatant engagement farming nonsense over and over again. Very little actual substance.
hmmm forced? I think knowing how to poliitely decline the things you dont want to do or arent able to do is important as you typically have a choice in those situations
Dialog... is this an Australian thing
No, we'd write "dialogue".
Did you say that Jews & Israel are singled out for worse treatment than other groups? The evidence shows the opposite: Russia was removed from the Olympics and other sporting events & Putin was charged with war crimes by the ICC, while Israel was allowed to participate in the Olympics & other sporting events & Netanyahu has not been charged with war crimes by the ICC. Western govts talk in favour of a ceasefire, while arming Israel & trading with Israel. In contrast, they put sanctions on Russia. As for the treatment of people for their ethnicity, Facebook publicly announced they now give special allowance for people to break community guidelines if the victims of abuse were Russian, while this has not been done to Israelis nor Jews. In recent years, there have certainly been attacks in western countries on people for being of Russian ethnicity & being Palestinian, Arab or Muslim, as well as Trump's anti-Muslim immigration ban and campaigns by rightwingers in Australia to end immigration of Muslims & Arabs, especially Palestinians. Is this true of Jewish people? I don't know. There has been harsh criticism & even graffiti against ZIONISTS (including christian zionists & other non-Jewish zionists), but against people for being JEWISH more than against other ethnic groups? I haven't seen evidence of that.
Would be interesting to have someone like Vijay Prashad, Yanis Varoufakis or Vincent Bevins on to discuss those points about America's impact on the global south and how South Asia may have developed without British subjugation. Could be useful to have some uncomfortable conversations with intellectuals from the left as well as the right.
America's history is one of belligerence and terror throughout Asia, South America and the Middle East (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Chile, Brasil, Indonesia (The Jakarta Method is an excellent read), Afghanistan, Iraq, Burkina Faso etc). Even the Russia-Ukraine war has its origins in an American supported coup in 2014 and a push to expand NATO up to Russia's border (i.e. within 6 minutes nuclear flying time of Moscow) despite U.S. Secretary of State James Baker promising to Gorbachev that NATO would move “not one inch eastward” on February 9, 1990. When will centrists start seeing the USA as the belligerent bad actor it is instead of buying all their branding about being the shining liberal democracy on the hill. They don't even pretend to look after their own people, what makes one naively think they're going to give one skerrick of care for us vassal client states on the periphery. We condemn China for hypothetical ills. Yes they see Taiwan as part of China (as officially does the USA, Australia and most of the world) but they are in no rush to 'seize' it - history shows they'd rather mesh together via trade than take it by force. They have not fired a bullet in war since 1970. Our condemnation does not match their actions whereas the US is a trigger-happy nutter and we bow down in deference to their grace and championing of liberal democracy. This is a country in which basic universal healthcare and "don't spend billions of taxpayers dollars on a Jen O'Seide" is not even on the ballot. Some democracy huh. If one is happy to exhaust front line Ukrainians and Russians in order to "send tyrants a message", what's the strategy for Netanyahu, who has been given carte blanche to end 100,000+ in the middle east. How many innocent toddlers and hospitals need to instantaneously cease existing before we decide something needs to be done to stop that?
I came here as an old John Safran fan, hoping that John Safran would speak against the Israeli genocide of Palestinians being carried out in the name of Jews. Israeli colonialism done in the name of Jews is a major reason for any increase in antisemitism. Indeed, in 2014, Israelis gunned down hundreds of peaceful Palestinian protesters in the Great March of Return. THAT is the main thing I can think of that would increase antisemitism starting around that time. Furthermore, there was a big campaign by the UK’s Zionists and the UK security state to remove Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the UK Labour Party by accusing him of “antisemitism” for being in favour of a free Palestine (as well as having other leftwing policies that the security state dislikes). That campaign resulted in a PERCEPTION of “there is plenty of antisemitism” regardless of the reality. Now of course, plenty of people hate Israel for their genocidal actions since October 7th 2023, and some people have become antisemitic because some people conflate Zionism with Judaism. Indeed, Zionists themselves conflate Zionism with Judaism, doing their colonialism and genocide IN THE NAME OF JEWS. When a state, whether Turkish, Japanese, German or Jewish Carrie’s put a genocide, it gives that ethnicity a bad name. As an Australian and a white man, I want everyone to know that I don’t support white supremacism & I campaign against colonialism done by Australia & by white people and I recommend that Jewish people join fellow compassionate Jews like Noam Chomsky, Medea Benjamin & Norman Finklestein in campaigning against Jewish supremacism & colonialism. As for squatting in someone’s home…. Stealing someone’s (even Kanye West’s) home is not a good look for someone who is of Jewish origin. ESPECIALLY when you dismiss Israeli colonialism & genocide as if it’s less important to criticise than a few people’s prejudices against Jewish people. Aren’t you aware of the famous video of an Israeli settler talking to Palestinians, saying “if I don’t steal your home, someone else will”?
Great ep. Matt’s podcast is one of the best out there at the moment. Keep up the great work 🙏
One of the most worthwhile listens I've had in a while...
Thanks for this video. Lots of us on the center left and center right of American politics are ready to get past all this election conspiracy nonsense.
You are one of those naive internet rubes who just sits back and nods along [with the mainstream narrative]… and feeds into a culture of thought silos. Your demeanor towards Candace proves it. I regret how unbelievably wrong I was about Candace during the BLM campaign in 2020. I was told to dislike her by the liberal intelligentsia and so I did, without ever taking the time to listen to her directly. Years later my opinion on her has completely changed. I now watch her show and find her to be refreshingly honest, principled, with sound judgment about the topics she covers. I watched this interview for Candace and Candace only. Be grateful she gave you the time.
I guess Candace was not crawling over hot coals to be "allowed on your show". Her renowned empathy and charity is testimony again, in her willingness to give a leg up to a struggling podcaster. Hubristic self absorbtion and ego, will likely prove your downfall but in the meantime, enjoy the green shoots bound to sprout as a result of your unfounded antagonism towards Candace. I pray that you see the light.
It took him forever to get to his point, but in the end, he summed it up quickly: "You don’t know what you’re talking about." It made me wonder-did he bring her on the show just to say that? Disagreeing with someone doesn’t automatically mean they’re uninformed; differing views can come from well-grounded perspectives too.
This interview could have been so much better if he wasn't such a bore and was more informed
This is awesome! Can we also get someone on that would believe/dispute counter to this?
Sir, be grateful Candace agreed to this. I’m only here for her
She wouldn’t have the job she does without feminism and the statement that feminists hate men is just crazy. She makes money off this that’s the only reason she speaks like this.
Hey Josh, not sure why but i had to click into your channel to see this one, it didn't ding up for me with the bell thingo
Harris should just send her own delegates in the states she loses, crying it was stolen, who will then go to the VP (her) to validate the results. Easy.
Good discussion. Matt Bevan's podcasts have been brilliant.
If the The Dunning-Kruger effect was a human, that human is Candace Owens.
What has she been proven right about it lol? Her audience is conspiracy theorists that is why they want this its catering. Interesting that she pussy footed around direct calm polite questions, she is use to gaslighting highly emotional argumentative people and creating conflict. It was refreshing to see her act normal for once tbh. Oh wait this is for good PR she got the boot, chat to an Aussie, etc, got it.
I'm on my phone right now. What a pain in the arse that I have to pay to hear the rest. I know you have to make a living Josh and I'd love to support you if I could afford it.
Hello People
It may have been have been an example of how to disagree without being disagreeable but I absolutely guarantee none of it sunk in. Why ask her what things she has said that she was told was wrong but was proven to be right, and not push back when the two things she bought up she was and still is demonstrably wrong? This was an utterly pointless conversation.
Love you Candace!
...not candace. Shes a treasure
What an idiot
As soon as i saw this guys hair and that shit eating grin i knew he was gonna be awesome! BTW watch his body language every time she says AIPAC
Cautiousness however noble and wise is for you, but not far her. You both serve different roles in the grand scheme of things and that's how it should be. Imagine if everyone was Cautious on the same things at the same time. There wouldn't be any progress, any deal breakers.
That's why we are different. Some people are leaders, some people are not. We all should express ourselves . That's why we are different.some are ice breakers, some are rebels, contrarian ,It's natural. If she needs to pivot , she will. But we need people who are rebels. That's how creativity comes across.
I guess when you're too lazy to do the required research into the subject matter, then this could explain your own comprehensive hubris, in calling Candace to account for hers. Her humility and charity in even appearing on your amateur hour, speaks volumes for her. It would be nice if you grew a pair and debated from a position of knowledge, rather than pretend antagonism, simply to place yourself in the position of nodding donkey to Candace and exposing your hypocrisy for the viewers. You'll probably do fine, so long as you dont place yourself on a ladder above Caroline Jones, Mike Willesee, Chris Masters, Bernstein and Woodward or Snowdon and Assange. I guess your own self absorbsion wont allow for that, for all these reporters carried gravitas and credibility.
This is a woman who has literally said "I instinctually feel that this is wrong" and that is her basis for disbelief in any fact or finding. She believes in her simplistic deep dives of any given issue, she will find out more in a week than decades of research and multiple experts. She doesn't believe in universal facts to start with, the only time I see all of these kind of remarks is when she speaks to an actual adult, who isn't looking for a gotchya moment, and whose whole purpose of having a channel it's to own the other person and have x amount of likes. Then the comments devolve into a popularity contest like she is Beyonce. It's pure farce at this stage lol.
@@f.n.246 If only you were willing to research and read as comprehensively as Candace, there might be something to your obnoxious attempts to interrupt and shut Candace down. I need no more evidence of my rightful position than to compare your viewer list to that of Candace. It speaks directly to your irrelevance. Pass the popcorn.
Nice work again Josh don't ever stop doing what you do because you do it very well.
Sorry Josh but bringing her on was a big mistake. She's just a straight up mouth-breather who spews garbage nonsense non-stop. Her "providing a platform" for people to respond to her special brand of maniacal screeching at the guests who would actually want to go on and argue with her *wouldn't do anything* because she's a sycophant.
let me do the Candace trick on Candace: she's not black, she's not a woman, she's not conservative, she's not Christian, she's not antivax, she's not anti-Zionist, etc, etc. I know I'm right!
So your ‘research’ on WW2 is watching a BBC documentary? What is wrong with you. You’re affecting people’s lives. People whose cousins and grandparents parents etc were brutally murdered in the most unbelievably cruel way, in millions. It’s simply disgusting. You’re Ben Shapiro minus the work, minus the reading, the studying, the learning.
Why did you upload this again?
Candace Owens: "I like to keep a healthy skepticism." Also Candace Owens: "I do put my Christain faith first."
Doubt is the heart of faith, and faith is itself without belief.
He's a hack and quite lazy intellectually, and just plays devil's advocate for the sake of being argumentative
This guy is a moron. I’m only here for Candace
Candace wasn’t kicked off of her show because she spouted antisemitism …. She disagreed with the Gaza and Israel war and her and Ben Shapiro had a falling out due to it.
Surely the Palestine issue is one of land ownership not religion?
Lol safran is becoming kookier as he gets older, just as we all suspected he would. Mainly in terms of being more chaotic & harder to follow because he's leaving a third of all his thoughts in his head & verbalising the rest. I look forward to his later years when he devolves into speaking only in riddles.
To assume because you’re not versed in historical data, that no one else is, is asinine. Anyone can definitely look up dates and events for themselves. If she was spreading misinformation, people would be knocking down her door to discredit her. Instead she has people like you, that just want her to peek under the vale of illusion but not totally uncover it. Candace keep going! Don’t stop, we’re sick of the lies and corruption.
And historians and scholars. But sure.
Live well, die happy, love all, try not to hate anyone, be kind give kindness! When you leave this current physical biological state, your whole energy, body and spirit, will be recycled! ✌️
Good job Candace! Question everything!
Isn't math a USA term and maths Australian. You highlighted Johns point of cultural sway.
