The Magnetar UDP900 is better I’ve just ordered mine this morning should receive it tomorrow can’t wait 💪
Noice! Lemme know what you think!
Price. Everyone whines "why is it so much" Oppo felt they were not making enough and demand wasn't high enough so they left the market. Used and multi-year old units were going for these high prices before Reavon and Magnetar entered the market. You have 5 years of inflation since Oppo left the market. With overall demand for 4K players being lower than it was 5 years ago and those involved needing to put food on their plates, they need to charge more or not bother. The newest Oppo available is 5 years old and still command significantly more than what they cost new. While the Panasonic UB9000 has an excellent picture, it can't do has much as this player. No one seems to bat an eye at it's price compared to Magnetar and Reavon. This is what we get stuck with since the masses never adopted 4K players and discs.
Sadly the masses were never going out and spending 3K on a 4K Blu-ray player.
As much as I would love to see Oppo returned to the market I feel that they have already sold off their software and hardware architecture to the remaining companies still in that market
@IncognitoChild Yea. $499 or $599 or whatever it was for my Oppo 203 was just the right price.
@@hatoraidcowboythen be less poor, because the AV game might be too expensive for you.
Huh? What do you mean?
Still goes way above streaming in picture quality and sound.
I have a 203,and picked up the 820 when lit came out, both work flawlessly. This seems like a player to replace the 203 for those that missed out. When the oppo was going for rediculus money I was tempted to sell mine but glad I didn’t. Good video.
Thank you! Let us know what you think if you get a Magnetar
@@hatoraidcowboy I doubt if I get one,my player’s work great even with LLDV with my JVC RS2000. My budget is done for this year,I bout 2Rythmik FV18PC’s last month lol.
I was one of those that missed an Oppo UDP-203 so when i found the Magnetar UDP-800 early this year i saved up for one and bought it in May and i have been very happy with it since i bought a region free version and the region change is so much better than it is on my old Oppo BDP-103D which is a pain in the butt to change region on
Nice video! Do you plan on doing a video on the new Zidoo UHD5000? I would love to know how the 2 players compare especially when it comes to the sound!
Thank you! Not unless they send me one for review. I bought two Zidoo players for myself. I’ve reached out to them numerous times for review units and they continue to ignore me
This is one of the most underrated TH-cam channel
Man thank you! I’m doing the best I can over here and just trying to be patient. Thanks for all the support!
Good review! However, what kind of files were you playing? MKV? ISO? Blu-ray folder? I’m interested to know whether the Magnetar will play back movies with Dolbyvision correctly and, if so, which file types.
Thank you! I was playing mainly MKV and I tried a few .iso folders. File play back in MKV will play anything including Dolby Vision
I'm not thrilled about the price tag, but my Panasonic UP-820 is so super sensitive to any little dust or disc blemishes, that I'm considering upgrading to something with a better disc drive. I might have to pull the trigger on the Magnetar UDP800.
Based on your experience, do you prefer one large sub or 2 smaller ones? i cant put 2 big sub in my space
Depends on the size of the woofers and your space. Can you tell me the size of each sub you’re referring to?
As an Oppo 203 owner I still have a Magnetar on order to get ISO and Blu-ray file playback. What I find missing from the Magnetar is an IR input and discrete IR codes for On and OFF. As a universal remote user I don't care about the supplied remotes of my components and nothing beats an AppleTV for streaming.
Can you confirm that the Magnetar uses the same IR codes as the Oppo?
Its funny that you mention that, the Oppp remote does work with the Magnetar. At least mine did. I will double check again and get back to you
Was considering one of these for the file playback cause my zappiti neo is running super slow for some reason. Ive been using the infuse app for play back and it’s good but doesn’t do atmos. This would’ve been a great option but that price tho. Awesome review on the product
Thank you! Yea I think the price is gonna hinder sales. Magnetar has another player that’s even more expensive. Really odd how they are pricing their players.
@@hatoraidcowboy I agree. And this is coming from someone with a kscape which is like the ultimate “it’s too expensive” component. I have the ub9000 in my theater now and since putting all my disks onto a drive I can’t justify another player just for network streaming at that price. I prob should reboot and try to figure out why my zappiti is slow to load. (My smaller zappiti in my bedroom works perfect)
Which Zappiti model is giving you issues? Is it just loading slow or what?
@@hatoraidcowboy the zappiti neo is and yeah like 90-120 seconds or more to play a movie. Before it was 5-10 seconds at most. And it just started happening random. I haven’t changed anything. My zappiti HD which is a smaller player doesn’t have that issue
@Rob_James Are you playing files over the network or internal HDD?
Look at the Reavon X100. Very similar and cost 899.00. It comes region free and has the zoom feature of the Oppo.
It also sucks.
If you look inside the machines it's a night and day difference in quality. Magnetar is far better built.
Here the oppo 203 i am have him from the begin release then kost in europa 850 euro good price then. The new ones are to much mony for it. I hope he not break soon but keep going on. I am happy whit the oppo uhd 203.
As a Magnetar UDP-800 owner there is one thing that the Magnetar UDP-800 does far better than the Oppo UDP-203 and that is how the region change works its so much better than how Oppo did it
You might want to check and see if there's a firmware upde
I sent the player back last year after I was done with the review
Does it have the zoom feature of the Oppo? Stretching 4x3 video to 16:9.
I believe so. I didnt test this feature but I believe there’s an option on the remote.
@@hatoraidcowboycan you check that function while playing a 4k Blu Ray?
@joez7700 I can try. Its boxed up already to ship back but I havent taped it up yet
Hello, Can anyone confirm the Magnetar zoom feature works exactly as the Oppo 203? I have a 16:9 125 inch screen and sometimes I like to zoom in on my MKV files to get rid of the top and bottom black bars when watching a movie.
Great review. I will stick with my Sony X800M2 until they do a price drop which I hope they do in the near future because this player may be the closest I ever get to an Oppo! Lol
LOL It’s def the closest you’re gonna get to an Oppo, but for me the Oppo still reigns supreme!
Excellent review. I'm an unapologetic Oppo geek fortunate to have the BDP-93, 103D, and UDP-203. After watching this, I see no justifiable reason to drop $1600 for this player, which, in my opinion, is laughingly overpriced and technically inferior to the 203.
Thank you! Yea I’ll take the 203 any day over this. Good player but the 203 still reigns supreme.
Is this player region free for dvd and Blu-ray, or do you have to get r modified? Is it dual voltage and usable without a step down converter?
No idea on the latter, but I dont think the UDP800 is region free. Shane Lee just reviewed the UDP900 and it came with a letter saying it was region free. The UDP800 did not
You can buy a version that is region free for $100 extra
@ReZel80657 Thanks for the info!
@@hatoraidcowboy Not sure now if its $100 or $200 but you can get both the 800 and 900 in a region free version for a slightly higher price, i know this because i bought a region free 800 myself and the region code change is so much better than how Oppo did it
@ReZel80657 Is just a firmware update?
Just got the UDP-900 delivered to replace my Oppo-203. My decision was based on FOMO for not opting for the 205 at the time for the audio improvements. Can’t say video’wise I see much difference, and the system integration choices I have to make remind me now why I went with the 203 in the first place. Can’t say right now this is the best 3K I’ve spent. Am proud of owning one of the latest machines, just hoping I get to realize a payoff
I still think the 203 is superior IMO. Picture is just as good maybe slightly better but besides that I’ll take my 203 over this any day.
Going down Audiophile trends is rather funny issue. Is Panasonic UB9000 3x better than the UB820 for someone not using odd formats? No likely 10% of audio only. I have 9000 anyway and love it on Dolby Vision and Atmos as its sole purpose
Does the remote have a backlight?
Yes
On the website there's an option for $100 firmware update any idea what the Improvement is?
No, thanks for the info. I’ll try to find out!
@@hatoraidcowboy also what's the difference with the udp 900 considering its nearly double the price?
@bigmike4133 Not sure as I havent had the chance to review. I’m also curious to know lol
@@hatoraidcowboy cool man no worries I was just curious too. I mostly just use Vudu right now so I'm wondering if an upgrade is worth it but probably not at that price haha.
@bigmike4133 LOL I’d say no 😂
May be a great player, but the price is way to high! I'll stick to my Panasonic 820. It does a great job at a reasonable price point.
That seems to be the consensus. Still wanna know how they are justifying the price. Great player tho!
are you going to review the Magnetar UDP900
I dont think so. They only sent me the 800
I had a launch Oppo 203 and ended up selling it when prices for them skyrocketed once they stopped making media players. I ended up buying a Panasonic UB820 and absolutely love it. I think I prefer the overall PQ on it to the Oppo on my JVC projector. I have it combined with an HD Fury DIVA and am really happy with the HDR/LLDV. I would highly recommend the Panasonic 4K Blu-Ray players to people. I think I have had an issue playing a disc maybe once in the last 4-5 years or so and I watch a ton of movies.
That’s awesome! Glad you’re enjoying the Panasonic. How much did you end up getting for your 203? Does the UB820 have the hdr tone mapping?
@@hatoraidcowboyYes, the 820, as well as the 420 has HDR setting (I have both players)
I have just 12 hours ago got that player, it's still in the box. I'll be setting this baby up to see how it is for me 😇👌
@nobaccos Let us know your thoughts!
@@hatoraidcowboy And here it is... Its a wow from me. I do think the ps5 has better black levels and to be honest is a good player but when you start messing with the settings and sliders on the panasonic ... Wow just wow. The only real down side is that dam Netflix buton I keep pressing on the remote 😭
$1600 is too much. Nice review.
Thanks Percy!
@@hatoraidcowboy no problem
The megnetar is getting an app
What app?
cant kill something that's already dead lol! JS :)
LOL
I think $1,600 is way too much. I’ll pass, but another great video!
Thank you!! Yea $1600 is pretty steep
I see it's missing the hdmi input on the back like the Oppo.
@3483maverick Yup! That’s a big feature that a lot of people really like and use.
Does it have the Zoom feature like Oppo? Talking about stretching 4x3 video to 16:9 ?
@3483maverick I believe it does. I didnt test that feature but I think I saw a zoom function on the remote.
If I had the money, I wouldn’t buy it! Of all the Home Theaters that I have seen, and their A/V gear is highlighted, Magnetar is not in the rack!!
Well dont base your opinion on what other people prefer lol, buy what you want to buy 😀
@@hatoraidcowboy I did, Panasonic!!
@@hatoraidcowboy I saw where you are gonna do a tour of your setup. Now that I wanna see!
Is it region free ?
I don’t believe the 800 is. The 900 is.
Its region free for a $100 extra
I had this unit, as a warning to everyone. The drive is cheap. No suspension system at all and causes lots of noise and vibration. No joke it was louder than my ps5 playing disks.
😮 Thanks for sharing your experience
@@hatoraidcowboyI did like it besides the loud dive. It plays everything over my NAS perfect. I almost kept it just for that fact but I just ordered a oppo 203 clone for a 1/3rd of the price. I’m still kicking myself for selling my 203. That has a HUGE mistake.
Might want to contact the company. I haven't seen any reviews that it's loud - may be a defective unit? Also I watched a video of the internals - the drive has springs under it.
@@lucaslee1483 You can’t always trust reviews. They do not sell many of these units but I did join a forum from france and many people have this issue. I contacted the company and they told me it was normal for 10-15% of my uhd disks to be noisy. Someone of the forum did investigating opening units and the issue is they use a super cheap drive that has no suspension system. It’s the same drive used in many Chinese units such as Reavon. Do a google search with noisy Reavon players.
I have said many times and here I am saying it again. Magnetar is overpriced. Oppo could make the UDP-203 at $550 six years ago while Magnetar cannot. The Magnetar is triple the price of the 203 with less feature. I guess the Magnetar uses newer chips for their video and audio playback? Used Oppo UDP-203 and 205 sell for three to four times their original price in eBay now. Is that the reason Magnetar is charging so much. I wonder if you can compare the Panasonic UB 9000 to the Magnetar UDP 800.
I’ve reached out to Panasonic for a review unit but they wont send me one.
@@hatoraidcowboy Thanks for your quick reply. Actually I purchased the Panasonic 9000 last week because the Magnetar is too expensive for me. Video is slightly better on the Panasonic than my trusted Oppo UDP-203. Better contrast with brighter highlight and darker black. If you can get a Panasonic in the future to compare, it will be great since I like to know what other reviewers have to say about the Panasonic UB 9000.
@kennethlui2268 I dont think I will have the Magnetar for long. Its a review unit. I have to ship it back
You understand how R and D costs are amortized over unit sales, right? Do you even know what the word amortize means?
@@johnsullivan8673 To me, it is overpriced. You can have it.
UDP800 trumps the Panasonic UB9000. But the UDP900 is the New King, by a significant margin! I saw the pictures of trio side by side. Oppo205,203 are no match to these new machines! Technology improved after so many years.
The Panasonic UB-9000 is the best player.
Havent had the chance to review that one yet.
Can you explain why you feel that way?
The Hollywood chip alone makes it the best.
Hollywood chip?
The picture processor
Nobody would buy a Magnetar or Reavon, if Oppo was still available! It is ugly, as is the remote, has less features, not even an app (which was very useful with my Oppo), no HDMI in etc. And all at a higher price. And that UI? Have they stolen it from Oppo instead of developing something by their own? Thumbs down for Magnetar. And that cheap looking blue logo is the "icing on the cake".
I believe the same engineering team that designed the Oppo also designed the Magnetar. The pricing is odd to say the least. Oppo still reigns supreme for me.
The only feature I truly would love on my Oppo 203 is ISO playback. I can playback ripped discs now using AVCHD BDMV folder structure only. It works flawless but I prefer the ISO container for other media players such as ther new Zappitti Z2000 Pro. Has anyone had any issues with an OPPo203 frimware hack to get iso playback?
@Xelajair They used to have iso playback but removed it a few years ago
Oppo stopped making them for a reason. If they were profitable at that price point they wouldn't have stopped making them. Crazy people buying used Oppo's on eBay for 2k also doesn't help quality newer ones become cheaper.
The Panasonic UHD players blow these OPPO clones out the water with its processing, the HDR tone mapping feature, and the upscaling of standard BDs using Chroma 4:4:4 4K upsampling. This is just another overpriced OPPO clone with dated tech.
Panasonic UB-9000 is the best player.
Ps5 is better
@TheFbiFilesRepeat For what Blu Ray? Lol
