I don't think it will match the Panasonic UB9000 for picture quality. Panasonic's processing power is still bleeding edge. Reavon and Magnetar both use MediaTek chips, like the Oppo 4K Players, and all have issues with video and playback. I think the Panasonic UB9000 is still the best 4K Player on the market.

So basically coz the digital outputs are the same quality,. If one only uses 'streaming' for their music (tidal) one would be better off going with the 820.
On the other hand if one was to integrate a CD/phono and was looking for superior quality one would be better off going with the 9000., is that correct

    • @TomlinsonHolman52583
      @TomlinsonHolman52583 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@totalplonker824 - You want to take advantage of the best DAC (digital to analog converter) configuration you have available. If your receiver or preamp/processor has better DACs, use the players' digital connections to access them. If your player has better DACs, you may want to access them via its analog outputs.
You can listen to high-resolution audio files via high-speed USB connections on the rear of the UB820 & UB9000. However, these players are not great for streaming. These players are designed to maximize DVD, CD, Blu-ray/4K Blu-ray disc playback.

Nice review! I will always stick with my Oppo 203, still and probably for a long time, be the best 4k player!
These new companies can not compete with oppo, and it's crazy because they have been out of business for years.
I actually know the social media person from Oppo (won't mention his name) great guy!
Beside the fact, I visited Oppo warehouse in San Francisco about 7 years ago and what a great crew they were! Just imagine if Oppo was still in business, think about it. To this day, it shows us they are still way ahead of its time.

I have a Reavon 200, Oppo 203 and 205 and for video play back in all formats but especially 4k the 5 year old Oppos are easily bested by these newer players for 1 particular reason in that we never got any kind of tone mapping options. The ability to set the tone mapping based on the type of view screen you have is critical especially if you have an OLED and a projector. It kind of sucks because I also can only imagine what 5 to 7 years of tweaking the 203 and 205 and what kind of machines they could have evolved into.

@@scaron1933 I have the Oppo 205 and a JVC 4K projector that has its own Frame Adapt HDR tone mapping capability. Most new and recent Native 4K projectors also do too. So I don't require my Oppo to have any tone mapping features. I just set my Oppo 205 for "Source Direct" output, and let the projector work its magic. Works perfectly.

    Dear Techno Dad,
My Panasonic DP-UB820 died on me after only two years - refusing to read discs. So I went out and purchased an identical model, a new DP-UB820 to replace it, figuring that I would give Panasonic another chance. Within 24 hours of the purchase, Top Gun Maverick began pixelating and freezing with sound drop outs. On a brand new unit. And I looked at the back of the disc, it is pristine. Also, when the old UB420 was working, the Maverick disc played without problems, so it's not the disc.
Now I'm considering leaving Panasonic completely, and spending much more money on a better, more solidly built unit. I am hoping that a more expensive, but better built unit, will be able to play my discs without issues.
I am considering the REAVON UBR-X100 but I am also thinking about the MAGNETAR UDP800. My question to you is, which one would you recommend? Another good question is, which 4K player do you actually use in every day life when you want to watch movies?
Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts, keep up the good work on your channel, your videos are very much appreciated in the home theater community.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ahhhh! That sucks…I use the Magnetar…it is a great player, but it’s also not perfect. Last disc I actually watched was John Wick 4. No issues with the disc but I mostly rip the disc to my NAS. Then I watch it over the network, with either the Magnetar or another device. The Magnetar is a better player as it’ll play more discs than the Panasonic players and is a much better file player as well. It does have some quirks, like I’ll notice it won’t turn off. I’ll have to pull the plug sometimes to get it to turn off. BUT, I have never experienced a disc freeze or pixelation as you mentioned. The Reavon was much more buggy. It’s like the Magnetar is way more polished. From the GUI to the User Experience.

I wanted to give you an update on that Panasonic UB820 player. Since my last post, I ran a ton of 4K content through it again. I played 4K Top Gun Maverick twice, and there were no problems at all. Then I played 4K versions of Ready Player One, Lucy, Intersteller, Back to the Future, Passengers and 2001.
Every disc played perfectly. Not a single hiccup or problem.

My LG G2 has to be on the "Audio/Audio Output" (I could be wrong on the exact wording my memory sucks) and not "Audio/HDMI (eArc)" in order for my TV to turn my processor OFF and ON automatically, to play tv streaming media audio thru my processor and to allow my TV to control my processor volume output. I prefer this setting even though I manually have to turn media devices ON/OFF.

It’s 2.0 and it’s sufficient to transform a very good video quality, and there is no Blu-ray player created yet for 2.1 HDMI output. You only need that for video game consoles/PCs. But for Blu-ray movies, it’s not needed. Also, you can hook up an HDMI 2.1 cable to a standalone Blu-ray player to get the maximum bandwidth to ensure that you’re getting the best picture and audio quality.

I have had the udp-800 for about a month now and overall I'm very happy with it, but there are a few problems.
Disc playback of BR and 4K BR is silent and beautiful. The disc mechanism during DVD playback of many of my DVD's is noisy.
The 'zoom' feature does not work.
These first 2 problems are not a big problem for me since only a few of the movies I want to watch are only on DVD.
For anyone using a universal remote, the oppo ir commands all work, but Magnetar does not accept the discrete 'on' and 'off' commands. Toggle 'on/off' command works, but the discrete commands are very important when creating macro's for universal remotes.
In setup, the display settings are confusing to me. Oppo had 16:9/auto which is what most people would use but is not a choice on the Magnetar. Perhaps Techno Dad can help with what is the proper setting for 16:9 TV.
The front panel display cannot be set to dim or off in setup. It must be changed with the remote each session.
There is no 'save settings/reload settings' choice in setup menu.
With all these minor problems, which I hope can be fixed with fw upgrades, I would still recommend this player. Its build quality is exceptional and in the short time I've owned it there have been 2 fw* updates besides the one I did on the original setup.
*3rd update is loading now as I write this, but none of my issues were fixed. It is encouraging that there are updates fairly often. Hopefully someone involved in beta testing can pass these problems along to the proper people and they can be fixed in a future update.

@@altodomino7859I don't have any experience comparing the 9000 to anything other than the Oppo 203's clone, the Cambridge CXUHD (I own both), but I can tell you that Panasonic Blu-ray players have never gotten DVD scaling right - I recently packed up my 9000 to go in for a service because the disc drawer makes nasty cogging/vibrating noises when it closes and 4K discs just won't play without stuttering, freezing and breaking up, and I reinstalled my Cambridge CXUHD in the interim.
In playing some DVDs I knew didn't look great on the Panasonic in the Cambridge, I was instantly greeted with images that were free of artifacts like aliasing, moire distortion and freeze distortion (basically makes the picture look like the player's processor can't decide if the content is video or film).
I can't believe how bad the DVD up conversion is on the Panasonic, especially given its price, but apparently they didn't make DVD a priority on their players because they're missing a ton of features that the MediaTek based units offer, including a zoom button on the remote to blow up non anamorphic DVDs, an auto stretch feature for full screen DVD content, a resume playback function when a disc is ejected and reloaded, etc.

Better picture quality of movie disc playback. Not better than playing all audio discs since it will not play SACD or DVD-Audio. Not better at external media file playback. So like everything it is use case scenario. Panasonic doesn't meet as many. As for the remote, not everyone has their setup in a dedicated space or the player in a separate room requiring an alternative solution. A good remote can pause the movie and do frame stepping for someone interested in seeing the nitty gritty of special effects. Control audio switching to go to different languages or audio commentaries without having to go back into the disc menu. I haven't seen much about Magnetar subtitle controls, but those are important to some. Not all universal solutions go beyond just the basic functionality. Just because YOU don't have a need for more than what Panasonic offers doesn't mean it is best for everyone.

I have both an Opp-203 and a Panasonic UB-9000. From a pure picture quality standpoint, the UB-9000 slightly edges out the Oppo-203, especially when its HDR Optimizer does some nice things with HDR10 movies (although, not always). My Oppo-203 on the other hand, has always had some HDMI handshake issues with my Denon AVRs, mostly some lags in transmitting content (better with my X3800) but, overall. its still an excellent player with some big advantages over the Panny. I use the Oppo's HDMI input with a Roku 4K stick, mainly because with older 4:3 content, its zoom function at 1.3X is very good. However, since the Oppo is alone in this feature , no real points off for the Panny or the Magnetar. The Oppo's biggest advantage over the 9000 is its ability to play almost any kind of video/audio combinations in files on a USB hard drive. This includes being able to play lossless audio in MKV and MP4 files. The 9000 is very limited in this arena. It can't play lossless audio and can't even play E-AC3 audio. It also can't recognize chapter marks in MKVs which the Oppo can. So even though the 9000 is my primary disc spinner, the Oppo will stay until it breaks down. If it does, it looks like the Magnetar UDP-800 would be my first choice since it appears to have the same video file playing ability as the Oppo.

Great video! I want to be able to playback DVD's from a different region also. Would that be the UDP 900 or a some kind of Software upgrade?

The 800 in this video has the region free upgrade. So I would think the 900 should have it as well.

I have a panasonic DP-UB820-K going to a denon x4500H and sony oled- Is upgrading to this player going to improve picture or sound quality all that much? Only utilize physical discs only right now if that matters.

Hi! Great question. I don't think you would want to upgrade if you don't need network playback.

does it automatically shut down when idle like the Panasonic players do? That's an annoying feature that you can't disable. I'm looking for a player where this doesn't happen.

When you say idle, do you mean like when a movie is paused for long periods of time?

I’ve had my pioneer UDPLX500 for over four years and it’s still going strong, but if I ever needed to replace it this Magnetar would be a good choice

@@TechnoDad let’s be honest if we all had the money we’d probably just go with a kaleidescape and never see another DVD player ever again

@@bedroomcinemaguy5568 Kaleidescape is certainly awesome, but keep something in mind. Even though it has many 4K titles not available on disc, Kaleidescape is still missing lots of 4K content only available on disc. Especially 4K titles on disc, from boutique labels (Arrow, Criterion, Severin, etc.). So to truly have access to everything, we still need disc players.

I'm a happy owner of an Oppo 203 and 205. In addition to lacking HDMI in, it also lacks analog 7.1 out. I'm not sure how many 203 users used this (I do on 205, but not 203) but it added additional flexibility that when paired with HDMI in, the player becomes a full-fledged 7.1 processor/preamp. The 900 adds this feature back, but still without the HDMI in.
