This EP was the first time I'd bothered giving Counterparts a chance, and I absolutely fell in love with it. It's rare that pure scream music grips me immediately, but I was already hooked at the 1:33 part. I think Martyr and Artery managed to sneak their way on my top 100 even.
Hey Steve, love your reactions! Got here after your dive into Bilmuri (the GOAT) and have enjoyed listening to your input on music since! When it comes to Counterparts and their style of music, they definitely kind of left the familiar zone they usually reside in with this EP. I personally enjoy it but I absolutely agree that it can feel very same-ey when giving it a full listen from start to end. I would highly suggest checking out their latest full release, "A Eulogy For Those Still Here", since I believe it better represents their "core sound", if that makes sense. There's a lot more variation, melody and a wider range of emotions present and at the very least, I think you'd be able to enjoy it a bit better!
Melodic Hardcore is how’d I’d explain them to someone, and I related to your comments after To Hear Of War, in that when I first listened to them I wasn’t read for this kind of music. It certainly grew on me, and hasn’t really let go. I think it was on The Breakdown with Nath & Johnny I saw Counterparts summarise quite well, in that if algorithms could see past the term “hardcore” they’d end up on more people’s playlists due to them being a bit of a bridge-band between Metalcore and Hardcore. The complexity of the guitars is amazing, but I think the lyrics and vocal choices are the highlight for me with Counterparts. And Kyle is a fucking unreal drummer.
Counterparts are melodic hardcore or metalcore. This EP is pure heavy but I’d recommend checking out their other albums. If you want dynamic guitar writing and class musicianship, The Difference Between Hell and Home is one of the best, if not the best, melodic hardcore album ever written. Props for checking them out though and can totally understand if they aren’t your vibe but they are absolutely more than a one note band and so tight live!
I love Counterparts, I like this ep… but it’s miles from what makes Counterparts, Counterparts to me. The melody and emotion of the usual/older melodic hardcore is second to none for me. Some of their albums are more dynamic and great journeys for sure. I’d recommend albums: ‘The Difference Between Hell And Home’ and ‘You’re Not You Anymore’ - awesome musicianship awesome emotive vocals. Thanks for the reaction as ever 🙌🏻
If you’d want to give them another chance I’d highly recommend their album You’re Not You Anymore, furthest thing from a one note album with some stunning melodies
This sounds more like Brendan the singer's other project END which is just more downright heavy as hell. Counterparts normally have more melodic parts going on in their music they do have a little on this EP but leans more towards the heavy side of things. There's at least 2-3 songs on this EP that are playlist for me but I definitely see where your coming from Steve about the songs sounding one level of energy throughout basically the songs that I like have variety in them while the others sound very much the same \m/
Not particularly a fan of this EP but i will check out their other albums or EPs from the other commenters suggestions. I can see spurts of potential to be a band i could possibly like. TBD
If the first band you think of in Hardcore is Knocked Loose, I think you're gonna have a tough time on this channel with anyone that actually has a relationship with Metal & Hardcore beyond a casual one. But maybe that's your target audience? all the best.
Tbh this EP sounds nothing like Counterparts maybe except The Hear Of War. It sounds more like the lead singers Brendan's side project END. They arent really ever this heavy, I'd recommend checking out their Nothing Left To Love album or Tragedy Will Find Us to get into them, their old stuff is more so Melodic Hardcore and the newer ones are more so Melodic Metalcore. This EP sounds nothing like their old stuff. And also, it really always takes a couple of listens to a project of theirs to get into them, it's that way for pretty much every Counterparts fan. Definitely give their older stuff a chance

Weirdly this EP is what made me like Counterparts lol

Their magnum opus in my opinion is A Eulogy For Those Still Here. Definitely a more dynamic album both instrumental and vocal.

If you want to listen to something more approachable by them I suggest giving the singles on “A eulogy for those still here”

Hell And Home is their best in my opinion. I wish they stuck to that melodic sound more
Band is top 5 for me
