  • This fried bread dough is made throughout the world and is known by many different names. The name Doughboys is supposedly known mostly in Rhode Island. I grew up with these in Connecticut. Fry Bread is a delicious treat and it's easy to make.

Im from Northern Maine and we called them dough boys. They are typical fair food that we enjoyed once a year when the fair came to our county. They are delicious.
We ate them with all sorts of toppings including powdered sugar and cinnamon, cherry pie filling, molasses, and pizza sauce and parmesan cheese.

Grew up in northern RI, doughboys were a treat at any amusement park or flea market. Cinnamon and white or confectioner's sugar were a must!

My mom just took some white bread dough balls and rolled them about 1/4 inch thick by about 6" round, then fried them in oil with a little butter til risen nice and browned but not quite burned. No sugar, just yummy fried bread and butter pat on top. She also called them doughboys.

My mother used to do the biscuit thing. She had a cutter for biscuits / donuts. She would take the insert out of the donut cutter and used it to cut the center out of the biscuits. She deep fried both and coated them with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. The center pieces were called donut holes.

My grandmother on my dads side was German she made homemade bread pretty much everyday. She made doughboys for us once when we visited her. They were slices of bread dough pan fried like a pancake then spread with butter. That's a doughboy for me!

My Oma made something very similar in Germany but she use to use flavoured sugars, she put the sugar in a brown bag with afew biscuits shook them, then onto a rack with a tray under it to recover any sugar dropping off Oma was frugal. She mostly used vanilla or cinnamon flavoured sugars, but also citrus zest flavoured and kirsh or rum flavoured for the adults.
Thank you for all the videos take care and God bless.

I'm reading a book about the Peninsula War in Portugal (1807-1814) and they (English Troops) mention foraging to find some flour to make Dough-Boys. I came upon this searching for an explanation of what they were.

On the Canadian prairies, these same type of fried bread are often made in a thinner elongated shape with points at each end and called "rabbit ears". It's interesting to see all the various shapes & names for fried bread depending on where you travel.

I grew up on fried dough, I still make it to freeze, take out what I want. I stretch out the bread dough thin, fry in oil. Makes great base for sandwich bread, pizza, cinnamon sugar, or just plain melted butter served with a soup or pot of beans. This is know as Langos from Hungary.

As I grew up in Texas , and still live here, I am enjoying also trying out recipes from all over the USA. Couple of things I wanted to say quickly. I am from Rhode Island and we always get Iggy's doughboys in summer. Doughboys are thin and crispy on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. They are not like the Chinese doughnuts which are soft and chewy. Using canned biscuits will not give you the same results. Also, adding cinnamon sugar to them makes them doughgirls. Doughboys are topped with just plain sugar or powdered sugar.

My mom always called them dough boys...I grew up in Indiana, Mom grew up here as well. Now, I make them with canned biscuits, just to save time, and I put a pat of butter in the middle, fold the dough over, and fry it in a cast iron skillet. I will try this recipe on a weekend that I have more time!!! Love all your shows here, and I learned a ton from you!!! Thank you so very much!!! I appreciate you!

I live in Kansas now but born and raised in Indiana and my grandma called them dough boys! I would always beg her to make them when I would go and spend a week or two with her and Grandpa during the summer. My mommy would make them the same way your mother would and I just couldn't eat them! 😐
Oh sometimes I would help her and we would make them round with a hole in the middle just like a "real" doughnut! I miss those days! Thanks for the memories!! God Bless

I made these today! Everybody loved them! Thank you for the recipe. I had to use my stand mixer. Several years ago I found I had to use it to mix the flour in when making bread. I can knead well enough, but not strong enough to mix all the flour in before it gets to kneading stage. I'd never heard of doughboys till I saw your video, but they are utterly delicious!

My dad made them from a can as well but we would do it during a fish fry in the same deep fryer as the fish. Then we put them in a paper sack with sugar in it and shake them up. He would dump all fish, seafood and the biscuits on paper sacks to absorb grease. When done eating we would throw the mess in the sacks then take outside so house wouldn't smell like a fried fish lol. Thanks for your recipe and taking me back in my child hood as well.
P.S. We called them sugar biscuits.

I stumbled across your recipe and I make homemade bread just about once a week or at least every week and a half. I looked at your recipe and it looks very bread machine friendly so instead of mixing up the dough with my hands I'm going to mix the dough in my bread machine and then lay it out on the counter and finish the recipe the way you did it. I'm mixing it up now and the bread machine and I'll let you know in just a little while how it turned out. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Hit the tube harder on the counter to pop it open. Like ya mean it! Take the biscuits out, make a hole in the middle, deep or shallow fry. Put chocolate, glaze, cinnamon sugar, etc. They are only yummy while warm. Both sons have friends that still comment how good the donuts were that I always made, during sleepovers. Lol. Still makes me happy that they remember. I'm going to make yours tomorrow. Ty for taking time to do vids!

They got that name because they look like the hats the WWI soldiers wore.
In fact, the soldiers themselves became to be known as "doughboys," over time.
This information came to me as a child from my grandfather, who was in the war. For once, I can't entirely say I care about the accuracy of his statement so long ago. But, he was there. So, I believe him.
