I am actually a very seasoned guitar player and just recently picked up a banjo. I have to concede that despite my guitar playing abilities, i came into this thinking it would be an easy thing to pick up. I was wrong. There is impeccable technique here and this is absolute patience and proper teaching at it's finest. this guy is incredible. Thank You!!
I found that the left hand is easy to a good acoustic guitar player. the right hand is a whole 'nuther story. took me a couple of years to get decent with the right hand.
77 years old never touched a stringed instrument bought a guitar in February a banjo in June 2022 tried different styles after your video think this might be the one 🤔 thank you If slow is fast I'll be the streak because I sure am slow
I totally agree. I'm a guitar player so yes some of the things came easily like the left hand. However I started with three finger Scruggs style and found it extremely difficult. Worked my butt off for a year and yes I'm finally tearing it up a bit (not on many songs but the few I practice and torture my family with). Now starting on on clawhammer is like beginning all over again. People say banjo is easy. They must be awesome musicians because its been pretty hard and slow and full of a lot of practice for me.... much more than guitar.
+John E Thank you John. I will pass your comments on to Barry. Having personally spent a good amount of time on the road and in various hotels around the country, I can tell you that he is like this in real life. :-)
Hi John, did you get your banjo? If you did, you might like to know that we just posted part two of this video. www.deeringbanjos.com/blogs/banjo-playing-tips/the-clawhammer-method-part-two
I haven't got a banjo yet...soon i hope. I played alto and bari sax daily for 6 years... so i hope some of those skills transfer. Can't wait to get started.
You are welcome...and I only run the TH-cam side. The other social accounts are run by someone else. But if you wont tell then I wont tell...how about that beer? ;-)
This is great. So happy you have actual helpful lessons to share instead of a teaser and a link to paid instruction. I'll remember that when I upgrade from this second hand Rover. Thanks!
This is most peaceful and zen thing I've ever seen recited by anyone not wearing a robe atop a mountain. I hope one day I can become as good a teacher as this guy in a subject, banjo or otherwise.
I was running through the videos on TH-cam trying to teach myself some claw hammer banjo today and came across this, which was by far the best. You're the man, Barry. Many thanks from middle Tennessee!
+Austin Prince Thanks Austin.Really glad you like it. We welcome any feedback that you have about the video so that we can help you and others become better players.
Excellent lesson, after having so much trouble finding lessons that fit me, this one did the trick! Thanks so much to Barry Hunn and Deering for making this!
I used to develop training, in the U.S. military. Barry has an innate talent, I appreciate very much. I've spent weeks on this video and may a few more. Thanks Barry, your words were not lost on me!
What an excellent lesson. I play guitar for years and that‘s such a good lesson for a new player. Very well explained and fun to watch. I‘ll get myself a deering open back banjo if i get to find one in Switzerland
Bought a Banjo almost a year ago, as i love to collect, build, and play musical instruments. Started playing guitars around age 10, (46 now) and always thought banjos were really cool, But watching someone play one even as a guitar player looked very difficult to learn. As it turns out this video was my first lesson ever. and while i have to keep remimding myself its not a guitar, i really love it. I found your instruction video to be the most helpful to me out of all the ones i've tried. your an easy person to listen to, and a great teacher. thank you sir.
Bought a Deering Good Tyme II for COVID hobby. Appreciate these lessons. Play a ton of guitar that uses frailing and flamenco-type techniques. Found his lessons very helpful and got me going in a day or two. Addicting instrument. Friggin' loud, which is cool. Like a friend advised, make a claw and whack it. But this is very helpful just to understand what's happening.
I just received my Deering Banjo and found this instructional video. Barry Hung is so patient with lots of humor. He’s absolutely non condescending. Very pleasant. I’m learning a lot. He gives lots of accolades.
Barry Hunn has made the best beginner's guide for the Clawhammer method I've found anywhere online. I wish he would make more, more, more of any banjo lessons. I'd watch them all.
I was just curled up on the couch with my Deering 5string when i found this, wow! What a great teacher and video, cant believe I didnt find this sooner. Yalls banjos rule!
I have run through a bunch of tutorials on TH-cam trying to understand the details that are key to this style. Thanks to Barry his videos and his patience this is now crystal clear to me. Barry you are the best teacher !
He knows how to play and how to teach! A pleasant Guy! A few days ago i bought the Goodtime Americana and now, i am brushing, plucking and hitting! I am very happy and i love my new Deering Banjo!
Hi Patricia, I just wanted to let you know that we just posted up part two...when you are ready. www.deeringbanjos.com/blogs/banjo-playing-tips/the-clawhammer-method-part-two
I'm impressed I'm a blues guitar player who inherited a 60 year-old banjo and am slowly but surely falling in love with the good ole 5 string thank you for the video
Great lesson. Was re-learning off my banjo from 46 years ago ($65 Christmas present!!) with this video. Great teacher going at a great pace; and a little humor as well always help. That got me looking at the Deering product. I am now into day 4 with my Goodtime open back model. What a great piece of work and great sound. Thanks for a super product and the lessons as well. Practicing whenever I can and really love it!
I've tried other TH-cam Videos to learn Clawhammer, and this video is Super! Couldn't figure it out before seeing this step by step, slowly explained procedure.. Learned Clawhammer style right away. Can't say enough good things about this 30 minute lesson. Now. . . . .to practice. . . . . . Thank you for this video Deering Banjo. Barry Hunn, you're an excellent teacher and I very much appreaciate your teaching method. Just Excellent.
Excellent I’ve just bought a Deering banjo for my Son who plays a Gold Tone tenor so this is totally different. I love the sound of both instruments. Your teaching technique is great so thank you very much.🇬🇧🏴
Thanks for the video. I really like the way this guy explains in detail. Its not complicated at all. He makes it simple. I just ordered a goodtime banjo. I can't wait to start playing. Thanks!
Hello from all the way from Australia. I would like to say thank Barry for the banjo lesson. I really hope to see a part 2 or more of the Clawhammer lessons.
An absolutely brilliant tuition video. I have concluded that my heavy Gibson MB250 resonator banjo is not really suitable for frailing. It is too loud and it doesn't quite have the sound of this open back Deering banjo. I have a British made open back banjo from about 1900, which is in pieces. My task is to rebuild it and learn frailing properly! Thanks for posting, I'm inspired!
Great stuff. Thanks. Almost forgot. I'm the very happy owner of both a Goodtime Americana and a Vega Old tyme Wonder. My wife is very happy too as my Deering banjos seemed to have cured me of a bad case of 'banjo acquisition syndrome...
Thanks a lot Barry! You are such a good teacher, I really like your "go-slow" method as I got very overwhelmed with other materials online. I have absolutely no music background and I just bought my first Good time yesterday! I called it Elvis Banjo :). Wish there was more videos of you teaching!
My first strumming ever, my first chords ever, with a banjo - and you are my teacher. Thank you so much. I will be practicing for weeks based off of this video alone.
Just stumbled on this: what a great teacher, and excellent camera work too! I’m a mandolin player (up in the Scottish Highlands)..but sometimes when I’m playing along with accordions, guitars, fiddles and bodhrans, I feel like I brought a knife to a gunfight. So...this has convinced me to add a banjo to my arsenal. Deering Americana with its mellower sounds looks just the ticket: if I ‘ve learned one thing over the years, it’s that buying a good quality instrument right from the start makes a huge difference to the learning experience (and if you decide it’s not for you, you can usually sell it for a good percentage of the original price).
Shalom I have recently started back in playing and use this video as total inspiration. Your claw riff beat is outrageously splendid. It is music to my ears! Your banjo is quite wonderful. I have been playing banjo since around 1998 and have written and published scholarly work on the banjo, taught at old time festivals and banjo camps, and been paid well to play old time banjo, and own 6 banjos right now. I think this is one of the best reviews of basic technique I have ever seen. You never learn this stuff totally for good. I am always going back to a basic beginner review like this or several every year. This is really really good I am downloading this one
about 2011 when I was asked to give a presentation on African American banjo history at the Suwanee Banjo Camp in Florida, he was also on the staff. I had expected he would be there as one of the teachers of clawhammer, but in fact h is one of the country's most outstanding and innovative Bluegrass banjo players. I go back to this all the time, and now that I take on students myself like them to start out with the first two of these, They are so entirely clear!
Just got a banjo yesterday and I'm able to get though every part except the last! Cant wait to be able to move to lesson 2 this guy knows how to teach!
Best teacher ever!!! I am quite accomplished on the 4 string Gibson. I recently bought an open back 5string. Also learning the Scruggs but wanted to learn the claw hammer too. Thank you for sharing and I do like Deering banjos. Had one!!!
As a long-time acoustic guitarist, I stray into finger picking when I want to learn Clawhammer. Barry manages to communicate with me at a level I find most satisfactory. Thank you. I have the 5 string parlor model (19 fret), which is brilliant for learning with.
+Brian May Firstly, congrats on the amazing and very apt name! Secondly, thanks for your feedback! We worked hard on this one to make sure we really break down those basics to get people going on Clawhammer. Happy to hear that you are enjoying it!
Hi Brian. Thought you might like to take a look at the new video. Part two! www.deeringbanjos.com/blogs/banjo-playing-tips/the-clawhammer-method-part-two
I think I have finally figured out the clawhammer. Thank you so much. It has made all the difference to do the three steps out of order, starting with the brush. I am calling it "Ditty Boom" for now, since it helps me to get the motions right.
I don't give compliments easily but this series is by Deering is excellent. Wish it was around when I first picked up a banjo in '71. All I had was Pete Seeger's book and some modivation.
This is by FAR the best clawhammer tutorial I have seen on the tubes. I am applying clawhammer to guitar and six-string banjo and it has been a nightmare trying to find an in-depth and understandable lesson. Also, I wish this guy was my neighbor. Super cool dude.
I've spent forever trying to master this and this video finally got me there. I realized the key is not to focus too hard on the rhythm. Once you've got the process of hit/brush/pluck down, the rhythm will come out naturally.
I echo all the previous comments, a marvellous tuition indeed. Must remember that manta “play slow, learn fast” and of course lots of practising. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for these videos! My dad gave me his banjo and I am determined to learn. You explained everything so well,. Just like taking a lesson in person :)
Love your videos. Went to guitar center today and got me a Deering. Made in America, great quality and sound, and awesome videos; what is there not to like? Thanks!
Great video! Please continue these beginner lessons, TH-cam is my only option for lessons as there isn't anyone in my area for learning clawhammer. Thank you for your help!
Would you believe that there is a dealer here in the Halifax, N.S. area that doesn't stock Deering banjo's..... BUT will order one if you really want one. Is that a dealer or what ???.
thank you so much for your wonderful lesson. really great learning from you and you have a wonderful teaching style. really easy to follow. !!!! greetings from South Africa
So awesome to hear from our fans in SA! We hope to open our first dealer there soon! Is there a favorite music store that you have out there? Thanks for the feedback.
After 15 years of fingerpicking on a guitar, I bought a Goodtime Classic and I am really enjoyed to find your video. Very instructive, with some little practicing tips which helps a lot. Thanks !
thanks so much for the video, it was super help full. i love how the deering company does everything banjo like videos for example and i also own a deering goodtime banjo which i love
Simplification without condescension. Give this guy a raise.
You are the Bob Ross of banjos. Thank you.
Except for the hair.
I bought a Deering banjo yesterday. So far this is the best clawhammer lesson I've found. Thanks!
Congratulations! , saving for an americana now. Best of luck and stick with it!

It's just very different. I too came from a guitar background. The are both stringed/ fretted instruments but that where the similarities end...
77 years old never touched a stringed instrument bought a guitar in February a banjo in June 2022 tried different styles after your video think this might be the one 🤔 thank you

Wow this is just great, love that teacher. Keep on going.
Thank you so much for these videos! My dad gave me his banjo and I am determined to learn. You explained everything so well,. Just like taking a lesson in person :)
Being a teacher, I am picky about teaching. Barry, you are excellent! Crystal clear directions, great pacing, and lots of encouragement.
Thanks Amy! This is not Barry, but I know that you will have made his day when i tell him! :-)
