When I first heard the song, I was trying to figure out what tuning the banjo was in, then, when I learned that Rhiannon Giddens was playing I knew it was probably not in an open G. The way you explain how to play it in the video is very insightful. I can’t wait to start learning this song. On another note, have you ever done, or consider doing, a tutorial on Rhiannon Giddens Louisiana Man? Specifically, the live version that she did on Austin City Limits? The opening to Texas Hold ‘em reminds me of the opening to Louisiana Man. It has that same deep, low, soulful sound.
Love this video. I'm having a bit of trouble finding out when to use the thumb og the fourth string/do drop-thumb. Seems like you only do it in section: 9-11 og the "3 and" - I can't make it sound "fluently". Otherwise such a great lesson - thank you so much!
I knew that this was Beyoncé’s best song musically the first time I heard it. She doesn’t get enough credit for the research and sampling she does, but instead she’s presented to the gp as a thief or something.

You should be able to tune down that low with the John Hartford d strings. Don’t know how that will sound with clawhammer, but some food for thought
What gauge for each string is suitable for this?
