      The 3 sounded great for me, to be honest. But I liked the strat the most in general. I always had the idea of the Tele bridge being the most distinctive tone of these Fender models but in this particular video the Start sounded great too in the Bridge, so all in all I´d choose the Strat.

      Jazzmaster are pretty famous for thier sound.
      Especially magic during live venue if you happen to see a band playing with one. Not too much distortion, set to some warm crunch. For me it's almost an unbeatable tone!
      How ever try a few, as fender did a lot of changes in thier specs lately...

    • @traviswrigg5158
      @traviswrigg5158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some of it is how right they got it in the first place, some of it is just the image and prestige they earned by having [[INSERT YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIAN GROWING UP HERE]] playing them, but probably the most of it is that sound engineers have had 70 years to figure out how to mix them. Famously a lot of recording studios own a precision bass that sits on the wall for when a bassist with some fancy expensive bass just can't sit in the mix properly

    • @Thoracius
      @Thoracius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@traviswrigg5158 *Most* of it is that they got it right in the first place. It doesn't take 70 years of mixing lineage to figure out how to mix a P-Bass. It just sounds good in a mix -- it does the work for you. That's why it became a hit then, and that's why it's still a hit today. It's also just the nature of survivorship. The models that didn't sound great didn't sell and got discontinued or have been changed to sound better. It's like any antique. You look at antiques and you think, wow back in the day they really made stuff to last. But that's because all the poorly made junk from the olden days is in a landfill. It's the good stuff that survives.

    OK... this is a bit strange...
    For the clean stuff, hands down the Tele is the winner for me. For the dirt, it's the Jazzmaster across the board, with the Tele a close second. That is not what I expected. Look, I'm a Strat guy, though I do have one Tele... But all of my Strats have at least one humbucker and that's a an absolute necessity for me. I suspect the results would have been skewed more toward the Strat had it had a humbucker. Still, this was a surprising and very interesting tone test. Well done, as always, Darrell.

  • @manifestgtr

    The strat is a NEARLY perfect instrument. I own teles, jags, a vintage fender lap steel, have built several jazzmasters, the works...but I always return to my strats at the end of the day. The neck pickup is untouchable, the 2 and 4 positions are sent from the heavens...its only weakness is that godawful, thin bridge pickup. But guess what? You toss a tone zone s or a jb mini in there and BLAMMO. The guitar gods instantly present you with a perfect instrument. There’s nothing you can’t do with a good strat. I’ve played gb jazz sets, dance sets, prog rock, thrash metal, shoegaze...my number one strat eats it all for breakfast. The only guitar in my stable that bests it is the custom 24. That’s a guitar that comes perfect from the factory.
    By the way, this means absolutely nothing in the way of diminishing the beauty of a good telecaster. A good, stock telecaster will probably get you farther than a stock strat. Its biggest strength is the strats biggest weakness. That bridge pickup...the telecaster bridge pickup is the sound of rock and roll.

      the telecaster for me has the better neck pu sound and the better in-between sound, so for me a telecaster is closer to the perfect guitar than a strat. i think both guitars are capable of doing any genre and are equally versatile. they both cover p much the same ground, just slightly different variations of the same thing. the strat can get more sounds, especially if you go crazy with coil taps/splits and the gilmour mod, but i always use all 3 pu combinations pretty equally on a telecaster. i rarely use certain sounds on a strat. usually just neck and middle, none of the in-between stuff (i know its blasphemous), and maybe the bridge pu if its a humbucker. tbh i think any guitar can do any genre as long as its played right and eq-ed right

      @@sunkintree And add a baseplate to the bridge P/U to make it more like a Tele pickup. Alot of people that put a humbucker or humbucker models have it in the bridge. I wonder if theyve ever sold a Strat model with a Tele Bridge pickup. The Jazzmaster seems closest to a Stratocaster but thicker like a Tele. Alot of the tones that are played on Jazzmasters seems like you can get a similar tone on a Strat. Strat and Tele is a bigger difference.

    All three sounded great, but since I am not a player, I can only go by what I hear. I would rank them in no particular order like this...
    1) Stratocaster - This is the Fender sound I am most familiar and comfortable with. It seems to work with every style of music well.
    2) Telecaster - Every time I hear a tele, I hear a country twang. I like country, so I like this. I can understand why so many country players like this Guitar.
    3) Jazzmaster - Not familiar with at all, but I did like the crystalline quality of the high notes. I see why you mentioned a chimey sound for the description of this one.
    This is just a lay person's impressions.

    The Jazzmaster have a more complex tone, with a lot of harmonics (that's why they sound fantastic with reverb), an unique middle position and the high medium frequencies cut though the mix very well.
    Love the meatier tone of the Telecaster on the bridge position.
    The strat is always on the run with the middle position.

    I’ve had a Strat for 12 years and I’m very bonded to it. That said, in recent years playing in bands, I found that it doesn’t get a darker tone that well. My boyfriend convinced me to get a vintera Jazzmaster and I’m so glad I did! I’ll always have my Strat and will continue to play it, but the Jazzmaster has more options and I’m grateful to have more options with it. Great video!

    Expected the Jassmaster to have a deeper sound than the Strat, but was surprised it was brighter/thinner. Also didn't expect the Tele to have the fullest/bassiest bridge sound of them all, but it did by a longshot. I really like how woody/scooped the Tele neck pickup sounds -- I love that sound. I've been a longtime Strat player and have always really like the balanced, focused sound -- both sits well in a mix and cuts well through a mix. Jazzmaster seems fine for rhythm that you want to kind of disappear into/fill out the mix, but a bit limited otherwise.

    The Tele sounded surprisingly stronger than the others through the bridge pickup during higher gain rhythm playing.

    If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the tele. Like you, I love the tele bridge pickup, and I also like the tele's simplicity: hard-tail, three position switch, volume and tone. For me, that's the sweet spot between versatility and straightforward simplicity. (All that said, I'd be happy playing any of those three guitars.)

    • @elefsidi
      @elefsidi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention, that Teles are more functional than strats because of their tuning stability, well-mounted bridge saddles and the option to install a 4-way switch so you can run the pickups in-series for some sweet humbucker-ish tones.

    I remember being 15 years old and had $800 to spend on a guitar at guitar center, I went in thinking it was gonna be a strat or a tele, my dad was with me and said hey what about that guitar, a standard black mex jazz master... at first glance wasn’t a fan, but man when I plugged it in after playing the tele and the strat, my ears were turned on to something the other guitars were lacking. I’m 25 now, and have yet to own a more pleasing guitar. It’s tone is different then any other guitar, but the trick them is to how to make em shimmer just right...

    Darrell, It's great to see and hear these back to back comparisons, a luxury few of us would get to experience otherwise. It seems the difference in single-coil layout, on each guitar platform definitely contributes to their unique tonality, not one necessarily better than the other, but each dominating their own territory. That slide on the Tele... now that's some serious grit!

    Got 1 of each - built a Strat and a Tele from MJT bodies and Musikraft necks... Seymour Duncan Antiquities in both - absolutely the best playing and sounding guitars I've ever laid hands on... Honestly - if you're competent and take some care, you can easily surpass Fender AVRI level instruments for less money. I'd even go so far as to say they're on par with customshop's.
    My Jazzmaster is a Fender Roadworn I bought NOS from a shop in Winnipeg (it had been on the rack for 4 years) and got a good price on it(70% of retail) - generally a nicely put together guitar, but definitely notice a few areas for improvement. I'm in the process of redoing the electronics and will give it a full fret job before putting it all back together. I was really impressed with the sound of the Jazzmaster and am very glad I picked this one up. at the moment it's set up with 10's (I believe) - planning on stringing it with 11's and will see how the bridge likes the 11's.
    LOVE each of them for their own reasons.

    Dude.....I just bought a squier affinity tele (race green) and it came flawless!!! No set-up needed. Perfect action, perfect frets and intonation right out of the box. Tuning was an almost perfect 1/2 step down. The neck is just amazing on it. My only complaint is that it's not strung through the body like the cheaper bullet tele is, but the neck is so much better. In comparison when I got my sg I had to lower the action, adjust the truss rod, then do it again two days later after it got used to temp and humidity where I live. As for strat, tele, jazz, depends on what I'm playing at the moment. But pure joy of playing goes to my cheap telecaster

    The Telecaster has the widest placement of pick-ups, so its middle position sounds fuller. It's just basic geometry.
    I suppose something close could be had on a Strat' with a switching that enables bridge and neck pick-ups together.
    So where's the Ibanez AZ now? It's the one to rule them all.

  • @backwater_j
    @backwater_j 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Minor historical nitpick: the original Tele in '50 was called the Broadcaster, which due to a trademark dispute with Gretsch had its labels clipped of the Broadcaster name (the "No-casters" of early '51) and later in '51 was rebranded the Telecaster. Notably the wiring changed significantly in these formative years (the early models having no traditional tone control or middle position, instead using a treble-cut capacitor for the third switch position and a blend knob for the tone control). Also of note is the Esquire (also premiered in 1950) which was a version with only the bridge pickup. Also worthy of note: the Jazzmaster trem is not the original one but a Bigsby(/Bigsby equivalent??). Similar trem systems which I've used and loved both but the differences are notable... most notably the Bigsby has limited travel on the trem arm and the Jazzmaster trem seems to hold tune a lot better. To the point of being the most stable non-locking trem I've dealt with.
    Nitpicks out of the way, outstanding work! I love all three instruments. But still prefer the Jag. ;)
