Fantastic story! The only correction I would add is that this is not the only case where a person has literally died of fright. Dying of fright is actually a well-established phenomenon that has happened to many people. It's when a big enough surge of fear causes the brain to release a flood of adrenaline, which in high enough amounts causes cardiac arrest.
There was a white woman a few years ago that “died of fright” when she tried to use voodoo to target her black best friend. It was a very popular story at the time because her Twitter account was still active and she showed a picture of the voodoo doll she used just a few days before dying.

Sure, the ground and the floor are synonymous with each other, but there is also a distinction. I'll accept it as the ground, but if you go higher up, say, the second story, there is no ground, only floor. I am in the flooring business. That's why I take it so seriously. It's not enough to make me unsubscribe, but it could do the storytelling some good to increase vocabulary and use more distinct words.

I feel kinda bad but I really gotta say I just ain’t a fan of it. I used to listen to Mr Ballen a lot more but I just can’t stand him yelling seagull lung while I’m trying to unwind. 🤷 I don’t mind the spontaneity of it all, just the volume.
Worked out fine for me and my friend Heidie , Love going to sleep to your stories . Thanks for the fine Job you do.I have a question what did the like button do to piss you off o
Ghost stories are fake because ghosts are fake. True stories are more creepy because they actually happened. Although I believe this person died from fright, if she actually saw a ghost it's because she was delusional.
Old ghost stories are the creeeepiest and especially the chick's dresses and wee black leather shoes, just thinking about it actually makes my eyes water after a spine chill.
I only a youngster and I was put in a police cell in the original Bow Street Police Station and I was sitting in the number one cell when all of a sudden I heard a young girl crying for her mother, it started faintly, it got louder and then it started faintly again and it just stopped, mama mama that is the only word that I heard mama, I got let out of the cell and I said to a police officer, why did you lock that little girl you should’ve put her in my cell, he just looked at his friend and looked straight back at me with shock and horror on his face, and then he said, what little girl Steve so I told him what I had heard, and he said no Steve, you heard the ghost of the Bow Street Cells and then he told me the story of this poor little girl, in the late Victorian times a mother was found stabbed to death in her kitchen and the bastards blamed the young girl and they put her in the cells in the number 2 cell and apparently she died of a broken heart and the last person to go into that cell so say died in a mental hospital, and the cell hadn’t been opened since the mid 1950s and when I heard the poor girl it was in the mid 70s, I’ve been spiritual all my life since my childhood, when you go into a police cell you have to take your shoes and belt off because you can hang yourself with either of them but, when I came out of my cell, I honestly made a conscious look on the floor of the next but it was slammed shut and there was no shoes or nothing outside so it was just left shut until it was knocked down or transferred into a hotel believe it or not, but one positive thing came out of it all the bastard that killed her mother was actually her father and they hung the horrible bastard, so he stabbed his wife to death and was hoping that they think it was his daughter and he just let her die in those terrible conditions, it’s just unbelievable but, it’s a very tragic and true story, I just wish I could’ve done something for her but I couldn’t I’m very sorry to say. Have a great new year from Stevie boy in England.
@KMVS8686 Well, you're right, we use miles not km on road signs, and we use degrees Celsius instead. I'm not sure why, or for whatever reason, I guess it's all I've known being born and raised in Yorkshire, U.K. All the best to you, have a great New Year. P.s - My Father's generation used inches and feet for measuring, my generation (born '73) use centimetres and millimetres - so, I hear you on that one.
Miss you dude , just came back from service glad to see you’re still going ! And you have millions before I left you had just started around like late 2019. Congrats Mr. Allan that is so cool.
Medical science now recognizes "broken heart syndrome", where the stress of extreme grief can cause a heart attack. If someone's heart was already weakened by grieving, having a ghost run through one could finish the job.
Mislead the stupid masses, much. Not medical science, just a psychological theory. Not one autopsy COD calls it that. Cause: heart attack. Mrballen said "basically". Meaning heart attack. Reasons unknown. Aight chill ppl.
@@Channel24377there wasn't any " ghost" or " paranormal" involved. It was hallucinations and extreme grief. And back in those days when literacy and awareness was at its lowest, one wouldn't be surprised if people believed in seeing apparitions.
I listened to your podcast on the way home from my fiancé’s house. They’re heading back to college tomorrow that is several states away while I remain on my break. Driving away was heartbreaking to say the least and I found myself crying, but your podcast and voice allowed me to stay vigilant on the roads, and brought some odd semblance of comfort. I found your channel when I was really struggling during the pandemic and I’ve always had an interest in the strange, dark, and mysterious. Your stories, and voice, have always helped me through tough times and I really appreciate that.
I saw the title of this story and I said to myself, "I wonder what story this is that Mr. Ballen is going to weave into our brains." Mr. Ballen rocks. Much love from Uganda 🇺🇬
I love that you don't have to play a character to amplify your personality to present us with these stories. You, Wendigoon, and Matt Cox are my favorite storytellers on TH-cam.
@@josefacundo6140 Wendigoon is lovely and a great storyteller. Matt Cox is a national treasure. Ex-Convict who defrauded about 15mil prior to the 2008 Recession. His story is WILD. 3 parter on Julian Dorey's podcast.... which you should also check out C:
@@ARejectedInjuredHowlingLimping Because people who like one thing might like another thing, too? He literally said, "I'm always looking for new channels to watch..." So I suggested potentially new channels for him to watch. What's the problem?
Thank you, Mr.Ballen, for yet one more spine chilling story told so well. And also for taking such good care of Seagull Lung. I love the way you laugh at yourself when you are talking about him. Once more, it made my day.
It's a shame people back in the day didn't know that it's dangerous to go digging in wet, damp basements or cellars. A lot of fungus and spores are deadly when stirred up.
I usually don’t feel fear from ghost stories, but this gave me chills. Mrballen is an amazing and talented story teller. I can’t imagine having his tell one of his stories at night around a campfire!
I am in Sheffield, England right now as I write, born and lived here all my life and never heard of this before, in my defence it was a little before my time. However I can confirm that in the early hours of a Sunday morning many walking dead can still be observed in the city centre.😁
I love this channel so much. I have to commute a few hours from where I work to see my family and without fail every time I drive I listen to these stories and the distance passes in what feels like minutes. In all my years on youtube this is the channel I hope has the most success and stays around forever.
Honestly Mr Ballens kids are so lucky. Imagine having him for a father and getting spooky scary stories on call? Especially at bedtime? This was my dream as a kid. Fortunately I was blessed with a scary story telling father as well. That came with voice changes and spooky jump scares 😂❤ oh the memories.
Out of all the content I watch & all my subscriptions, nothing gets me more excited than new Mr Ballen material. I wish there were new uploads every day, so thrilling to watch!
Sheffield is a great city if you are ever here in England, so much history - the steel, the trams, the music! This is an interesting story, which remains fascinating to this day. Brilliantly told my Mr B!

I've seen enough Mr. Ballen to know I can auto like it. That just is what it is. I love his storytelling style, and boy has it ever evolved. Happy New Year, Mr. Ballen.
I'm very glad to see Mr. Ballen video today. My dog isn't taking all the noise too well (since where I live people already started firecrackers and fireworks) but John's voice is calming him down a little. Mr Ballen isn't only great storyteller for us humans 😆 For real man, it's s miracle. I will have a few your vids in a row tonight - even if I already saw them. Happy New Year everyone
Oh bless, give him/her a hug from me. My dogs 15 now and shes going deaf. I remember the new years when she was trembling and drooling from fear. Take care
That's really cute ❤! Wishing you a happy and healthy new year ✨! BTW did your dog get startled by Mr Ballen's SEAGUL LUNG break? Because he goes from narrating in a calm voice to suddenly all bat shiz crazy during ad or shoutout breaks🤭
Thank you Mr Ballen for keeping me company and providing endless dark stories through 2023 whilst I've been working late into the evening rebuilding my house. Looking forward to more content in 2024 and I'll sure keep recommending you to friends....
Ive been watching mr ballen for a while now. And i have adhd so its hard to listen to a whole story that someone is telling me, however when im listening to mr ballen tell these stories, it's different. Im actully able to get enveloped in these stories. Keep up the great work!
This was the first scary story in a while, nice to see these coming back. Your spooky stories are the only ones I’ve seen on TH-cam that actually scare me. King of scary story telling you are sir and happy new year!
Mr.ballen is not the king of scary stories. He doesn’t even tell those anymore. He is basically a true crime storyteller now. I used to watch his videos from the very beginning when there was only a few thousand subs. He needs to go back and do those kind of stories.
Hello from Sheffield, England! 🎉 So strange to hear a story from your hometown on TH-cam! One of the photos is actually taken from the top of the road I live on 🤩
Happy new year, John, and everyone at Ballen Studios! Thank you for all the strange, dark, and mysterious joy in 2023, and looking forward to all that’s coming in 24!
Hey John, I want you to know that you make my day every sunday. These past couple days have been hard on me mentally and I would like to say thanks for being the best storyteller of all time because you always put a smile on my face.
Thankyou MrB for the great content over the past 3 years. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your brand next. Happy New Year to you, the fam & all the peeps at Ballen Studios.
I’m from Sheffield and I thought I knew all our local ghost stories and there’s many , but not this one . Campo lane is in the city centre and one of the oldest parts . It’s now the home to many a solicitor . I’d love to find out the location of this story to find the exact spot .
Please do find out. Now im interested. Mr Ballen didn't explain the story fully. Apparently, the ghost did talk to Ward. The spirit told her it was the restless soul of Elizabeth Johnson, murdered by her nephew, William Dawson, on 26 March 1722 and buried deep beneath the cellar "watery grave". The final message was, "The garret and the cellar are now marked with my blood." Had to do some real digging to find the report. Mr Ballen left alot of things in this story.
@@livealittle1100 I’m even more interested myself now you’ve told me all that . There are 2 excellent books by the same author. A ghost hunters guild to Sheffield 1 and 2 . Im wounding now if it’s in one of these books and I just can’t remember it . I used to have both but I lent them out and never got them back and as they are old books I believe they are no longer available. Amozon here I come , you just never know
Nice to know there’s a few people on here from Sheffield! Born and raised in Sheffield 8. I didn’t know of this story and it’s sick knowing mr ballen has covered a story so close to home
@@sarahh1775 Great. I'm from Malaysia and don't know anything about this. This story made me curious enough. I want to know what happened to that tenement, particularly the basement.
Your TH-cam videos have scared me shit less. I'm a grown ass man who sleeps with the lights on now. From the details to the additional sounds added amazing job.
I'm sure others are in the same boat, but new year for me is normally sitting indoors not doing much, I hope everyone reading this is alright and is having a relaxed / fun night, and ThankYou again for releasing a fascinating story
Now I'm curious about the story of the woman that was supposedly murdered. Aside from that, imagine being so frightened from seeing something horrifying, that your heart stops.
Cardiac arrest. Heart was probably beating so fast, too much adrenaline. She was probably sleeping when she died reliving it with much more clarity and more intensity. That would be my guess.
Currently sat in my apartment in Sheffield watching this. I have to wait for the newest videos to come out every week as I have watched Ballens videos in their entitreity and what a lovely new years gift this was 😁😁😁
That was an amazing story! My grandmother would have dreams that came true. She told me of a Confederate army group that buried boxes of gold and guns under her house in a dream she had, I was the only one she told this story to. Years later I realized her house was behind and almost adjacented to the Confederate arsenal that was destoryed in civil war! She had not been educated in the civil war history of Fayetteville North Carolina, and did not know there was a arsenal half a mile from her house.
theory here. what if the building had a gas leak somewhere that caused hallucinations and weird dreams? the gas leak was slow coming for the basement, but when the floor came up so did a bunch of gas? the gas made both women pass out and made hannah die. it wouldnt make sense for multiple reasons but its just a thought.
I mean yea that could be possible but it doesn’t really add up to the fact that they were fine with the basement when it was day time but the moment it was night then it got worse. It just doesn’t make sense that a gas leak would be more effective and a specific time of the day and consistently that same time of the day. Most likely what happened is they were so scared to enter the basement at night because of the past noises, their fear manifested itself into what they thought was in the basement (a ghost)
@@Itz1egends06most people are out of the house during the day and/or open windows, so I could see that. A friend came home to find his wife and kids passed out (everyone survived and is FINE) from a carbon monoxide leak. Apparently it’d been leaking from a water heater for the whole day but they had no idea, then came home to go to bed and almost didn’t wake up. I immediately checked my detectors after hearing what happened. Anyway, just an idea 🤷🏻♀️
@@JB-bm1to i mean yea most people are out of the house during the day but i would disagree with most people leaving windows open if they are not in the house. that is very dangerous. fair, it could be a gas leak like i said it is possible but it is more often than not "ghost" sightings are just people's mind manefesting their fears

I love all your stories - I'd listen to you read the phone book - but the ghost/paranormal ones are my very favourite. Closely followed by stories of people who have gone missing in forests or national parks under mysterious circumstances. Thank you for putting so much effort and passion into your work; you're helping to revive the lost (and tricky) art of oral storytelling! (Also, I love that you feel free to be goofy from time to time - I think it nicely complements your darker material.)
Wow, never been so early on a Ballen video. I really enjoy listening to your stories as I do chores around my property! Me and my sled dogs listen to stories of the strange, dark, and mysterious several times a week 😊 Thanks for being am awesome storyteller!
Who doesn’t love being creeped out on New Years Eve! Thank you Mr. Ballen for feeding my nerdy, creepy side, because when real life is a horror show, creepy is a breath of fresh air 😂.
I doubt your life is anywhere as bad as life in 1800's Sheffield, but its possible, so remember that struggle forms character and pressure can and does make diamonds. Peace and best wishes from Ireland, we are diamonds taking shape x
I love how MrBallen used the term "loads of people" instead of "lots of people"; as someone who lives in Sheffield, UK we use the terms "loads of ..." all the time. 😂❤️👍🏼
Reminds of this witch lady I know who keeps bringing innocuous everyday objects covered in, or containing "loads" blended among contents or dried upon objects. Things are just getting damn weird lately, so tiresome.

Worked out fine for me and my friend Heidie , Love going to sleep to your stories . Thanks for the fine Job you do.I have a question what did the like button do to piss you off o
I absolutely love ghost stories from the 1800s, because it's spooky and can never be corroborated. So fun!
You could ask the ghost I suppose...

As a guy from Batley, West Yorkshire, U.K - Just a few miles away from Sheffield it's great to see you cover this, cheers Mr Ballen!

Medical science now recognizes "broken heart syndrome", where the stress of extreme grief can cause a heart attack. If someone's heart was already weakened by grieving, having a ghost run through one could finish the job.
Wow that’s sad but why the ghost appear to her like that

The final message was, "The garret and the cellar are now marked with my blood."
Had to do some real digging to find the report. Mr Ballen left alot of things in this story.
@@livealittle1100 I’m even more interested myself now you’ve told me all that . There are 2 excellent books by the same author. A ghost hunters guild to Sheffield 1 and 2 .
