- In this video, I discuss a quick and easy way to get the rear doors open on a Jeep Cherokee (XJ). The rear door latches often get stuck because they simply aren't used as frequently as the front doors. One thing that happens is the door handle button will feel like it isn't doing any "work", and/or the door lock slider on the inside will be jammed in between the lock and unlock positions.
Time needed: About 15 minutes
Tools needed: Trim stick (aka: bone tool), and some sort of thin pry tool that can fit between the window and the door latch arm. Spray lubricant and/or spray penetrant oil.

ok, what if there is tension on the button and it is touching the inside lever, but the door won't open from the inside or outside? Yes I tried the kicking trick :)
I need this too, and don’t know how to remove panel because door will not open with latch or button, also the rocker lock button inside will not fully unlock?

What about the drivers door
Tried this and it didn't work, any other suggestions? I got the mechanism to move towards the door handle as far as it would go with no luck. Don't know if the Child Safety levers engaged has anything to do with this not working. Also, my fob door remote doesn't work either. I would normally unlock the doors from the driver's control panel. The drivers control panel unlocks and locks both front door locks and hatch, but not the rear doors. What could be going on and what other options do I have.

It could be that the latch mechanism is very bound up, and that moving the mechanism toward the door handle is only part of the equation in your case. I would try my best to squirt something like Aerokroil all over the latch mechanisms and work everything (including the inside door handle and lock knob) a bunch of times. Also - if the mechanism that rests against the door handle button is springing back toward the button just fine, sometimes pushing and holding the door toward the body (put your weight into it), then pushing the button, then quickly pulling on the handle while keeping the button depressed can get the door free. As for the door locks not working with the remote or control panel - it can be a lot of things, most likely wiring broken, corrosion in the connectors, or faulty door lock solenoids.
@@AKJeeper Thank your for your time and advice. I did try pushing on the door at the same time pushing the door handle button in and using a screwdriver to press out on the mechanism inside with no luck. Is it possible to get the panel off from the inside with the door closed? I'm thinking that would be my best bet to open the doors if the panel will come off.
Could there be a problem with my driver side main control door lock panel that could be causing only my rear door locks not to open? I will also try saturating the door mechanism to see if that frees anything up. Thanks again for any help.
I’m guessing this will work on 94 XJ front door with manual locks as well?
I haven’t needed to do this to the front doors, but yeah, it’s a very similar setup. You might have more issues getting tools down there as the window will be in the way most likely.
I have a 94, but the back window is blocking my view of the lever to push back. I hate this, lol. Idk what to do...
It’s really tricky to get a view of that area down there. It will take some good lighting. Rolling the window down definitely helps but I’ve done this before a couple of times when the window was not able to come down. There’s not much else you can do short of trying to remove the inner door panel - not easy to do with the door stuck shut and will likely cause damage to the door panel.
Hey, thanks for responding! Yeah, it really is a BITCH. I only have one working door. It's a royal pain, I've been watching so many videos on how to fix these, been working all morning on them, and nada.. I think I'll just kick it open at this point.. lol. Thanks for responding!
@@ExploreLin10 you could also spray a little lubricant in there somewhat blindly (get an idea where to spray by looking at the other door). Then work the door lock knob, interior and exterior handles several times. Maybe you’ll luck out and get it open. 🤷♂️
