    Nice video. It is too bad we're so low on supply for the X-Mid. We are working on that, but with the outdoor gear industry being backlogged it's hard to catch up. We're now ordering a lot more tents but we won't have those until later next year. In the mean time we do have a few smaller batches arriving but they'll sell out quickly so people really need to be on the stock notification list to have a chance at one of those.

      Thanks for the update Dan, I'll 'pin' your comment so others will be more likely to see it. I know I'm on the list; however, I suspect that the list is now much longer than the number of shelters being produced this go around. Congrats also on the rave review from Backpacking light!

      @DanDurston my friend and I are trying to hold out for the X-Mid 2P drop but I was really needing one before our November trip. The recent update on the website says end of the year, do you happen know if there’s any chance it’ll be early enough to receive before November 18th? 😅😅😅 I have been debating forever it seems now, preferring the X-Mid but really considering the Stratospire 2 or the Six Moon Designs Haven Bundle (which is extremely similar to the Gossamer Gear The Two that I just sold in pursuit of a two wall). I sleep solo in my tent so the extra width is not exactly one of my priorities. Not knowing when we will have a chance to snag an X-Mid factors a lot in my decision. But I also do not have the budget (at all) to purchase more than one.
      SO many things to consider! 🥴🥴🥴
      @ShastaBubba Adventures I really appreciated this video as I had nearly the same thought process, and enjoyed your perspective. Thank you for sharing it with us!

      @@amandatuley4881 Hey Amanda, I don't know whether Dan D. will see this comment, since he probably won't receive notice of it. You might try his YT channel or instagram instead. I suspect that, if he knew the exact date, he would already be broadcasting that and is just as much in the dark regarding when the production shop in Vietnam will be done as the rest of us. My suggestion would be to wait until mid October (allowing a month for shipping time), then if the drop hasn't happened, go with the Strat 2 or Haven. If you weren't happy with that choice, you could likely sell it on gear swap next year (minus 20%) and put that money toward the X-mid when they are more available. That's probably what I'll be doing myself!

    Thanks for putting this together Dan. I just went through the same process earlier this year and ended up getting a Seek Outside Eolus, a hybrid single wall tarp with inner net nest. Did 155 miles on the Colorado Trail with my two older children (15 and 13) and the tent performed really well. We were able to deal with some of the condensation by pitching the tarp as high as my trekking poles would allow and leaving a door of the shell open on clear nights. Really enjoy listening to you articulate your thinking! Keep it up.

    I once asked Henry Shires of Tarptent if there was a way to enlarge the simple 4 stake design of the Notch up to a 2 person sized tent.
    He said unfortunately not. The pitch loc ends would have to be enormous , requiring removing and reinstalling them every pitch.
    Complicating a simple tent...so the Stratospire remains the go-to double wall.
    When shopping for a two person tent for my wife and I, I discarded the SS Li for one of the reasons you mentioned; only 45". (If I remember correctly, the reason the SS Li is smaller than the SS2 has to do with the size of the dcf fabric roll; the extra 5 inches would have increased the price considerably)

I was fortunate to get the DD X-Mid 2P and then later the 1P. I’ll be using the 2P in situations where I’m less concerned about the huge footprint of the tent, and the 1P on my planned AT attempt in the fall. I’ve been really happy with quality and construction of both. These also take some practice setting up to make sure they’re square. I have pretty much the same criteria. I went down the same road and came to a choice of two tents. Firstly, the X-Mid 2 and secondly, the new Tarptent Double Rainbow Double Wall (DW). Both of these have a width of 50" for the inner. I tried to get the X-Mid 2 in the recent new batch but failed miserably so went with the Double Rainbow DW. Sadly, I've found that having 2 long wide pads ( I have 2 x Nemo tensor Alpine LW pads ) is just a bit of a pinch with this tent. Yes, it sort of JUST fits but not really.
    I think you made the right choice with the Stratospire 2 having the extra width to 52". I think that 2" is quite a lot extra and needed in this case.
    I haven't had the ability to try 2 wide long rectangular pads in the X-Mid 2 but something tells me it will also be tight if 50" wide, not 52" like you have.

      Hey thanks for the info; didn't know they started making a DW version of the Double Rainbow! @@ShastaBubba I certainly look forward to getting your thoughts on that. The new DR DW from tarptent is a superb design. Just a little tight on that 2x 25” width requirement. The features on the double rainbow are brilliant. I’m going to try and create a workaround for the inner if I can.

      Thanks for the tip and feedback! How did you make the struts foldable? Cut and tape? or did they come with a internal bungy string like free-standing tent poles? Great idea though. Also, and troubles with condensation in the DR, or does the liner completely take care of that issue?

      @@ShastaBubba I come from the western part of Germany at the river Rhine . We always have humidity . In holidays I’m always heading to Norway , this year it was Iceland . Have condensation in rainy weather but way less then in my previous 1 person single wall . The inner Liner in the DR prevents any moisture to drop on my gear , and with my height of 5,9 I don’t even touch the walls with my head or Feet .
      U can buy foldable struts from Amazon they have the inner bungy cord . All u gotta do is measuring and cutting 4 times . If u have Instagram I can show u some pictures I have made for a German UL trekking Forum .
      Also sorry for my rusty English I hope I was able to describe everything properly .
      Last not but least let me give u the reason why I sold the SS :
      Even tho u get used to pitch the SS in a faster Time ( I also took 30 min first times pitching it ) it somehow annoyed me .
      And I needed a more versatile Tent to pitch on rocky Ground , was looking for a freestanding capable tent .
      The DR is not „really“ freestanding on its own but with trekking poles it can .
      It’s also way faster to pitch .
      It held up very good to strong winds in the Icelandic highlands or in Norway on Mountain Fjörds and if u watch Videos , the Lithium Version has not full Mesh Doors but a Part at the bottom is nylon (?) fabric that blocks wind from blowing through the tent .
      I recommend the Video by Backpackinglight.
      But the Stratosspire was my first choice because it’s so Storm proof . I just didnt liked the Pitching , it did frustrate me .
      The DR also won’t fit horizontally in my Pack and with the DR I can’t modd the Struts like with the SS .
      With the DR I have to carry the Poles outside on my Pack in a pouch in order to fit the tent itself smaller in its stuffsack / horizontally in my backpack .
      Hope this helped a little :)

      The Double Rainbow looks nice and I doubt anyone would be disappointed with it. However, the X-Mid 2p is 2" wider (132 cm), 4" longer (234 cm), 8 oz. lighter (1085 g) and $80 u.s. cheaper . . . so still leaning toward the X-Mid. Also, I believe the Sil-poly is actually a better material than sil-nylon, but that's a more esoteric debate I'll leave to the forums! ;-) Thanks for the question!

    None of the cottage companies seem to make free-standing through. Here in Western Australia, any off-trail camping in the bush will be in very scrubby shrub, so a tiny footprint of a self-standing is great, my tension tents just are such a pain for more adventurous explorations. Also hiking in slot canyons where you’re camping on solid rock - a self standing is great.
    That said .. I keep collecting new tents 😬

    • @ShastaBubba

      True enough. I've occasionally pitched my mid using just rocks, which has worked, but would definitely be a PIA to do routinely. • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for the question. I considered Hilleberg but discarded them quickly as being ridiculously overpriced and generally on the heavy side. The Anaris isn't bad weight wise, but at 47 inches, failed to meet my criteria of 50 inches wide (enough for two large pads), and, at $600 u.s., it's near the price range for dcf but for a sil-nylon tent?!!
      Since I made this video, I was able to score the tent I really wanted, the Durston Gear X-Mid 2p and I really like it alot, much better than the Stratospire 2 AND it's just $300 u.s. -- so best recommendation would be to look at that shelter. My next video will be a review of the X-Mid 2 and I'll have a tough time saying anything negative about it. Good luck!

    • @michaelhull7307
      @michaelhull7307 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thanks for the response :) Completely agree about the price… For me, the Hilleberg scores major style points if nothing else; though, I have heard that their Kerlon fabric is stronger than your average silnylon. I also like that it has a solid inner roof. Have you had any issues with the Durston or Stratospire condensing water through the mesh? I’ll be keeping an eye out for your X-mid 2 review!

      @@michaelhull7307 No doubt, Hilleberg makes excellent tents and probably will last a lifetime. No condensation issues at all with either Strato or X-Mid. The stats are a bit confusing on the website, because they state specifically that it can hold "two 25" wide, tapered pads" but also says the head end width is 48". Must be new math or something. ;-) The floor also tapers to 42" at the foot end, so I'm guessing that all means it would probably work but be a very snug fit. Otherwise, looks like a viable option for ultralight weight and price!

    It's a shame you missed the X-Mid 2 , I managed to get a X-Mid 1 when they 1st came on the market and have never regretted that decision. I solo camp for the most part and normally use a Jungle Hammock but the need for a tent is always there. In my 78 years I have had a lot of tents ( even some cottage industry ones you mentioned ) and the X-mid 1 is the best thought out one I have owned. @@ShastaBubba Absolutely! I would probably have to resell in Norway to make the most of it but that shouldn't be a problem either. The thing is, anything I buy from outside that gets imported, the total cost os product+shipping+import fee, and then adding 25% on the entire, total cost, with import tax. So it's 125% of the total regardless if the shipping is free or not, which it rarely is. Making everything a lot more expensive. Example, someone is selling the X-mid 2 on eBay, at a marked up price starting at $350. The total for me would be around $500, according to eBay. 😅 Making everything an investment. But it's how it is, just need to make sure I make the right one once I do. 😊 Eagerly awaiting Evo Speedgoats to replace my Lone Peaks, and I've got an order in for a custom LiteAF 46 full suspension pack. @@ShastaBubba Hi again, Dan! Not sure if you'll see this, but I ended up getting the Atom Packs "The Mo" in a custom variant, which has been great on little trips so far. I've also been sent a pack from Vargo called ExoTi Bog, which has an external frame made from Titanium. The size of the pack is pretty much the size of whatever waterproof rolltop bag you use. And I tell ya.. it's bringing back a lot of memories from my childhood wearing an external frame pack, and the way it 'forces' you to have a more straight back, which I enjoy. So far the ExoTi Bog backpack has been a welcomed surprice I must say, being so vercatile, adjustable, seemingly solid and just an all round great fit. Can't wait to try them both more! :)

    I'm looking between durston gear x-mid 2 and locus gear khufu dcf.what do you think it would be better ?

    • @ShastaBubba
      @ShastaBubba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The LG Khufu is better for one person; X-Mid 2 better for two, or if on a budget. Happy trails either way!

    You missed a freestanding tent that fits your requirements. The mountain Hardware strato UL 2. Comes in at 2.6 lbs. 50" wide floor for two 25" wide rectangular pads, and is around $375-450 which is pretty much what the tarptent stratospire 2 costs (after factory seam sealing).
    I'm currently trying to decide which way to go between these two tents... which is why I'm watching your vid. Thanks btw!

      @ShastaBubba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, that's awesome; thanks for sharing this tent! At a glance, looks very comparable to the Strato, just a bit more expensive, but might be worth it for freestanding ability in the winter.
      Personally, I managed to score a Durston Xmid2 which, on paper, blows both tents out of the water, so I'll be making review videos as soon as I get it and give it a try. Cheers!

      @@ShastaBubba Oh MAN! How did you get so lucky? I do like the freestanding ability of the strato ul2 but if I could get an x-mid 2 I'd DEFINITELY jump on it!
      I appreciate you getting back to me. Have fun out there!
